FIRST READING: Acts 6:1-7

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

Every day, more and more people were becoming disciples.

Soon some of them—

those who spoke Greek—

complained to the apostles

that some of the widows

were not being taken care of

and were not getting enough to eat.

The apostles gathered the group of disciples together.

They said,

"Our main work is to preach the Word of God,

and we can't stop doing that to hand out food.

So choose seven people from your group,

and we will ask them to take care of the food

and see that it is given to those who need it.

These seven people must be very wise

and must be filled with the Holy Spirit.

They must be people who are respected by the others.

Fifth Sunday of Easter – May 10, 2020

While they are doing their work,

we will spend our time

in prayer

and in the ministry of the Word."

All the disciples liked this idea,

and so they chose seven people.

When they took these seven to the apostles,

the apostles put their hands on them

and prayed over them.

The Word of the Lord

GOSPEL: John 14:1-12

A reading from the Gospel of John:

Jesus said to his disciples,

"Don't let your hearts be worried and upset.

You already believe in God;

believe in me, too.

There are many rooms in my Father's house.

I am going now to prepare a place for you.

But I will come back,

and I will take you to be with me where I am.

And you know the way to the place where I am going."

Thomas said to Jesus,

"Lord, we don't even know where you are going,

so how can we know the way?"

Jesus said,

"I am the way, I am the truth, and I am the life.

Anyone who wants to come to the Father

must come through me."

Gospel Acclamation

Presider: Alleluia, Alleluia

All: Alleluia, Alleluia

Presider: If you love me, keep my commandments, and I will show myself to you. All: Alleluia, Alleluia

Introduction to the Gospel

Presider: In today’s gospel Jesus tells us we should never worry

because he will always be with us.

May the word of God be on our minds, on our lips

and in our hearts.

Reader: John 14: 1-12

Homily Focal Points: By looking at the life of Jesus, and getting to know him as a real person, we can understand

more about who God is. Jesus expresses God’s love for us. Jesus’ giving of himself was perfect. He lived

for us, suffered and died for us, and rose from the dead to show us that giving of self is how we can share

in eternal life. In the first reading, the apostles give a practical example of how this life of giving can

work in our world. Seeking the advice of others and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will find

solutions to the problems of our families, our neighborhoods, and our world.

In today’s bulletin . . .

Throughout the Easter season, we hear the story of the earliest Christian communities in readings from

the Acts of the Apostles. We hear how the people grappled with what it meant to place their faith and

trust in the Lord, understanding that doing so called them to live differently—to follow Jesus’ way of

love. This is more than a history lesson for us. As we hear how the people were drawn to Christ and

learned to follow Jesus, we are invited to ask ourselves how fully we are taking the gospel to heart. Is

Jesus our way, truth, and life? Do our daily actions announce the praises of the Lord?

In todays reading from Acts we hear about the widows who were being neglected . The apostles called

together the others and explained how being busy about the official “serving at table” should not stop

them from also obeying God’s word to care for one another. In these days we are grappling with

knowing what is essential and what is not, while the needs of the lowly are often being neglected and

often not even being noticed. This scripture is a guide that shows us that living according to the will and

way of Jesus (God) should never be ignored.

In the Gospel passage today, Jesus prepared the apostles for a time when he would not be with them

physically. Through his word, we are prepared, too. We know that God is with us in Christ through the

Holy Spirit, and yet, when we really have to act in accord with our faith, we sometimes falter. Jesus tells

us to not be afraid. We must have faith in Christ and do his works, even when we do not understand his

perspective, or when it becomes difficult to do.

Hey Kids – 5th Easter – Cycle A

There was a time when a person who was traveling would not even imagine beginning their journey

without some sort of map. Maps are very helpful to any traveler in finding the way to where they were

going. Today of course, we seldom ever use a road map. Do you know why? Most of us who own cars

these days automatically have GPS installed in them. How exactly does GPS work? When you are ready

to go somewhere, you type in the address where you want to go and the GPS connects to a satellite up

above the earth and computes the path to your destination. As soon as you start driving, a map appears on

the screen and a voice from GPS gives you turn by turn directions. It might sound like "Turn right on

Main street in one mile, turn right in one half mile, turn right in 150 feet." What happens if you miss your

turn? The GPS says, "Recalculating" and immediately computes a new route to get you back on the right

track to your destination.

When we are trying to follow Jesus in our daily life, it would be nice to have GPS to lead us in the right

direction, wouldn't it? It would be nice to have something to keep us on the right path and keep us from

getting lost; it can help us get back on the right path when we make a wrong turn in our decisions.

That is the way Jesus' disciples must have felt when Jesus told them that he was going to leave them.

Jesus said to them, "I am going to prepare a place for you and when everything is ready, I will come and

get you so that you will always be with me. You know the way to where I am going." One of the

disciples, whose name was Thomas, answered Jesus, "No, we don't, Lord. We do not even know where

you are going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered him, " I am the way, the truth, and the

life. No one can come to the Father except through me." Another disciple named Philip joined in, "Lord,

show us the Father and we will be satisfied." Jesus answered, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the

Father! Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Anyone who believes in me will do

the same things I have done."

That was all the disciples needed to know to get them on the right path to the Father.

So, how do you and I find our way to the place where Jesus has gone to be with the Father? We have not

seen Jesus as Thomas and Philip had, but we can listen to his voice speaking through the scriptures and

follow the teachings that he has given to us in the Bible—God's Holy Word. That is our GPS and it will

keep us on the right Path!

Nicene Creed

Presider: We believe that Jesus and the father are one, and so we pray

the Creed out loud so that everyone may know.

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

consubstantial with the Father.

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

(as we read the words in the box, all bow)

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

who with the father and son is adored and glorified.

who has spoken through the Prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

And by the Holy Spirit

was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

we pray …

For all people of the world. May they come to believe what

Jesus teaches and all he did to be with us forever.

For our families, neighbors and friends. May we live like

May they be treated with love and respect

We pray to the Lord… R: Lord, hear our prayer.

What other prayers do we want to offer today?

For all who are sick or suffering especially those who

suffer from coronavirus, and those who have died,

especially those who were alone.

For all the intentions we hold in our hearts . . .

(leave some time for silence) . . .

Dad and children, here is something for you to think about in how to show mom your appreciation for who she is and all

she does out of love for you, a song a child can sing to Mom, and prayers for you to pray for your Mom because praying

for her is a powerful and precious gift to her . . .

A short, sweet, and full of love song to sing to Mom –

Holding up 1 finger as you sing - “There’s only 1 thing”

Holding up 2 fingers as you sing - “To say”

Holding up 3 fingers as you sing - “Three words”

Holding up 4 fingers as you sing - “For yooouuu”

Using your hand to make this sign for I love you

Children can also make a card like this to accompany

the song

as you sing - “I love you”
