On Sunday, we celebrate Palm Sunday. Our Lenten Pilgrimage takes a great dramatic turn. Jesus enters Jerusalem with his friends in high spirits and full of hope and the crowd on his side as they welcome with shouts of joy, ‘Hosanna in the highest, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’. This entrance is a very political one. At the time of Jesus, victorious generals with their armies returned home and entered the city in similar fashion as the crowds waved branches and shouted out their names. No other Sunday in our liturgical calendar contains so much drama and tension as Palm Sunday. What begins with shouts of joy and the feeling of victory will quickly change as the same crowd a week later will shout, ‘Crucify him, crucify him’. Jesus’ spectacular entrance into the city is also his entrance into his betrayal, denial, condemnation, suffering and death and ultimately his Resurrection. We are part of both crowds and as we witness his suffering, we will also experience his Resurrection. We pray that as we enter into this most sacred of weeks with Jesus, we will be drawn closer to him and each other. Lord, the resurrection of Your Son has given us new life and renewed hope. Help us to live as new people in pursuit of the Christian ideal. Grant us wisdom to know what we must do, the will to want to do it, the courage to undertake it, the perseverance to continue to do it, and the strength to complete it. Amen Have great week. Dear Parents and Caregivers, Although it is hard to believe we are only 4 school days away from the end of term, next week is an exciting one not only as the last week of term but Holy Week. Passion Sunday While they were eating,

Jesus took a loaf of bread,

and after blessing it he broke it,

gave it to them, and said,

Take; this is my body.

(Mark 14:33)

Prayer

Gracious and merciful God,

You gave us Jesus, the Great Giver

who walked with those whose hearts and minds

and bodies were broken:

the downtrodden, the outcasts,

the battered and the bruised.

Forgive us for the times

when our hearts seem too burdened

to recognise the brokenness

of those in our midst.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Baton Relay next Thursday. The baton will only be at our school briefly

between 9:50 and 10:00.

Stations of the Cross The Year Five students will lead the school in the Stations of the

Cross immediately after the Queen’s Baton Relay, approximately

Easter Raffle for Philippines This term the Mini Vinnies students have decided to raffle some Easter eggs. We hope to use

the money raised to support a CARITAS Mission in the Philippines. St Mary’s Teacher-

Librarian, Helen Gillam, is travelling to this mission in April and will be assisting with the set-

up of borrowing procedures (and new books). The school name is Our Lady of the Sacred

Heart Integrated School in Cordova on the Philippine island of Cebu.

Thank you to the Mini Vinnies students who have brought in all these goodies for an Easter

raffle. Tickets are on sale for $1 every day at lunch time at both campuses until next

Wednesday. The raffle will be drawn on Holy Thursday in time for Easter. Please send money

in a clearly marked envelope with child’s name, class, Easter Raffle Ticket Money and amount

enclosed.

Caritas Australia – Project Compassion Each year, our school supports Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion which helps pursue justice and help those suffering from poverty and disadvantage in more than 35 countries around the world. Each week during Lent, the children will focus on the story of a person in a particular country which will be supported this year. Each class has a Project Compassion box and we thank you those families who have supported this already.

Curriculum What to do when you come to a word you don’t know? When your child brings home their home reader for the first time it may be daunting for some parents. The question that inevitably goes through your mind is, ‘What do I do if my child has trouble with a word?’ Here is a cheat sheet that you might find helpful. This terminology is what teachers use when helping student decode difficult words.

Eagle Eye: Look at the pictures to help figure out the word. Lips the Fish: Get your mouth ready by saying the first sound of the word. Stretchy Snake: Stretch each sound out. /c/ /a/ /t/ = cat Chunky Monkey: Look for chunks in words. text + ing = texting Skippy Frog: Skip a word and finish reading the sentence. Try and figure out what word would make sense there. Then ask yourself 3 questions: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? Tryin' Lion: Try a word and ask yourself 3 questions: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? Helpful Kangaroo: After you've tried ALL the other strategies, you can ask for help.
