The readings for the third Sunday of Advent offer a sug- gestion for they invite us to find joy in quite unexpected places and so encounter our God. We listen to Jesus reflecting to the crowds on the joyful unexpectedness of the Baptist: ‘What did you go out into the desert to see? A prophet? Yes, I’m telling you, and something bigger than a prophet’. Then he quotes Exodus, using a quo- tation that our evangelist, Matthew, had found in Mark: ‘Look! I am sending my messenger before your presence, who is going to prepare my way before me’. But there is no end to the unexpectedness, it seems, for he continues: ‘Amen I’m telling you – no one has been raised up among those born of women who was greater than John the Baptist’. We pause and make note of this very strong state- ment, and then we are given even stronger medicine: ‘But the one of least signifi- cance in the Kingdom of the Heavens is more important than him’. Presumably this refers to us, and that is very surprising. But it is also remarkably good news. The answer, then, to our question about how to identify the presence of God is this: our task, on this Gaudete Sunday, and all this week, is to look out for those joyful surprises that signal the presence of the Almighty. They are there, if you will just open your eyes in joy. REFLECTION

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Where better is possible, good is not enough.”

National Prayer for Drought Eternal God, in wisdom & love You created our

earth to sustain us & give us life. We turn to

You in faith, hope & love, asking You to look

with favour on our drought-stricken land, on

our starving animals, on our failing crops.

Strengthen, sustain & give new heart to our

farmers & all who are affected by drought; be

with those who support them. In Your loving

providence, send abundant rain & restore our

parched earth. Father of all compassion, hear

our prayer, through Jesus Christ Your Son, in

Whom the promise of new life has dawned, &

through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord

the giver of life; Renew the face of the earth.

Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Mary Help of

Christians—Pray for us. St Mary of the Cross

MacKillop—Pray for us. Amen.

THE BLIND SEE AGAIN. Many of the Jewish people

did not expect a Messiah like Jesus. Many wondered:

‘Are you the one who is to come?” Jesus came not to

exercise sovereignty and power over the people but

to bring blessing to the poor and needy. Let us

celebrate his birth this Christmas by being good news

for the poor.

Communion/Visits to Aged Care Facilities If

you would like your relative/s, in these facilities, to

receive Communion or be visited by our Parish

Priest/Parishioners, please advise the Parish Office

and arrangements will be made accordingly.

the Child Jesus (Sto. Nino de Cebu) will be held on Sunday

dance will be performed in the Church grounds and will be

followed by a celebratory Morning Tea hosted by the Filipino

Community.

17th January 2020. All are welcome.
