SMS Celebrates Thanksgiving

Every November, we celebrate with a special Thanksgiving Luncheon for our students. This year our celebration date is Wednesday, November 17th. The cafeteria will prepare the meal for the students to eat in their classrooms. It will be the only meal available through the cafeteria that day. If your student does not want to eat the turkey lunch that day please be sure to pack them a lunch.

SMS also joins our parish community in donating non-perishable food to contribute to the Thanksgiving Dinner of families in need. Your contributions could include stuffing, soup, cranberry sauce, pasta, pasta sauce, gravy, boxed potatoes, boxed desserts, canned vegetables and canned yams. This food will be kept in the classrooms and gathered on Wednesday, November 17th. Please be sure to check expiration dates on these foods.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

The SMS Ministry of Student Leadership is selling “Turkey Feathers”. These feathers will be sold in the classrooms November 2nd-November 18th and will cost $.25 cents each or 5 for $1.00. The money will be used to purchase food for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. The homeroom that sells the most will get a dress down day.

Each year the St. Mary Ministry of Student

Leadership sponsors a “friendly

competition” among homerooms to see

who sells the most feathers and earns the

most money toward Thanksgiving baskets

for parishioners in need.

It is a win-win situation. The Our Lady of Peace Social

Concerns committee gets the much needed help for

this huge undertaking, and the homeroom that raises

the most money will get the much coveted Turkey

Feather champion bragging rights for the year! In

addition, the students from the homeroom selling the

most feathers will get a dress down day.

Turkey feathers are being sold for 25 cents each or

five for $1.00. Money can be put in a labeled

envelope and given to homeroom teachers.

As always, thanks for your help!

Focusing on Mental HealthFocusing on Mental HealthOctober is Mental Health Awareness Month

As athletes, it is critical that you pay attentionto your personal mental health. Feelings ofdepression, anxiety and challenged mindsetsare very real and should not be ignored orconsidered a sign of weakness. 15% ofstudent-athletes suffer from distressingmental health issues and concerns that wouldwarrant seeking counseling (Watson, 2005).And only 8-9% of student-athletes with mentalhealth issues actually seek out mental healthservices (Watson & Kissinger, 2007). Student-athletes have less favorable perceptionstowards seeking help from counselors than non-student-athletes (Watson, 2005). We canchange these attitudes and help each other focus on and achieve whole health andwellness. Some common mental health problems for student-athletes include ( Exzel,2007, Fletcher et.al., 2012):

Depression (feelings that go beyondbeing in a blue mood. It involvesyour body, mood and thoughts anddisrupts eating, sleeping and thinkingpatterns) Eating DisordersSuicidalitySubstance Use/Abuse

Anxiety (a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease typicallyabout an upcoming event with anuncertain outcome)Burnout (feeling tired, less able toperform well and less interested inplaying sports)

Risk factors increasing mental health challenges for student-athletes include:

Balancing Dual Roles of Student &AthleteMaintaining Peak Physical ConditionAthletic Success & Failure (notmaking a team or losing a largecompetition)

Balancing Sport and socializing(sport vs. friends)InjuriesBurnoutCareer TerminationThe Pandemic

Everyone experiences multiple positive and negativeemotions on a daily basis. Playing sports can be stressful ina variety of ways, including being put into high stresscompetitive situations, experiencing pressure to performand juggling busy schedules. Stress experienced duringsports can also come from outside sources, such asschool, friends, etc.

Good Mental Health is characterized by the ability to...

LearnFeel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotionsForm and maintain good relationships with othersCope with and manage change and uncertainty

As a team have a conversation about mental health normalizing difficult emotions, explaining the signs and symptoms and always being compassionate, caring andsupportive of one another. Let teammates know that is is not only ok, but good to ask forhelp. Ask your coach or school counselor for local mental health services and support. Here are a number of national resources:

As a student-athlete, remember to practice Self-Care through self-compassion and mindfulness. Self-Care is taking an active role toimprove your health and well being psychologically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. If your own emotional “bucket” is empty, you’ll have nothing to share with others. Successful athleticperformance is a combination of mental and physical preparation -make time to train for mental health as well as physical health. Taketime as a team to read through and complete this Athlete Self-CareWorksheet created by Game Plan and the Canadian Centre forMental Health in Sports. It offers positive coping strategies, self-careactivities and a rubric to create a daily self-care plan.

Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication withthanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, whichpasses all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 4:6-7

Invaluable Resource for Athletes,Invaluable Resource for Athletes,Coaches & ParentsCoaches & ParentsAuthor Misty Buck, a Performance & Life Coach with extensiveexperience working with athletes, has created a practical andextremely usable “Playbook” for understanding and dealing withcommon mental health issues faced by athletes of all ages. The Mysteries of the RosaryThe Mysteries of the RosaryThe month of October is dedicated to the Most HolyRosary. Play Like a Champion provides a resource forteams to participate in praying the Rosary with AthleticReflections. You can download the entire resourcehere: Play Like a Champion Sport Mysteries of theRosary.

Here is one example of a reflection on the Crowning withThorns that asks student-athletes to consider how theyrespond to unjust experiences and live the golden rule.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the wholecompany of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, andthen twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his righthand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After theyhad mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led himaway to crucify him. (Matthew 27:27-31)

Reflection: Have you or a teammate been mocked or insulted by an opponent? Theseexperiences are humiliating, hurtful and unjust. They should never happen, but if they do,dedicate yourself to always play with fairness, never stooping to retaliate. As children ofGod, we are created to lift others up and never tear down. Dedicate your team to living thegolden rule: do unto others as you have them do unto you.
