SOME NOTES FROM FR. DWIGHT’S DESK [email protected]

Pray for Teachers, Staff, Students and Families This past week I was able to join the school faculty and staff for a day-long retreat at St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt. It was a wonderful day that

was divided into two parts. The first part emphasized team-building and coming to understand and appreci-ate more clearly the strengths of each individual mem-ber of the school faculty and staff. I think all of us left with a new-found appreciation for one another and the many gifts and strengths that God has provided in or-der to make our parish school community the wonder-ful place that it is.

The second half of the day focused more on some of the “nuts and bolts” of getting the school year off to a smooth start this Monday morning, August 17. Teachers, staff and parents have been hard at work on this plan literally since the last day of school in May. As one might imagine, there are many parts and aspects to a plan that will help keep students and staff healthy and safe during this pandemic in order to accomplish our parish school’s stated goal of shaping hearts and minds in the service of Christ. I am so grateful to eve-ryone who has worked so hard at formulating and im-plementing this plan. With the cooperation and hard work of students and parents, I believe this will be a good, if different, school year.

School Masses will resume at some point in Sep-tember, but no precise date has yet been established for this. School Masses, like all other school activities, will need additional planning and support in order to achieve the goal of keeping everyone safe and healthy. I will let you know once we set a date for the resump-tion of school Masses.

For now, please pray daily for all students and fam-ilies, teachers and school staff as we anticipate the new school year ahead. Our friends in the public schools are facing just these same challenges, and so they need our prayers, as well. May this year be safe and healthy and a time during which we all grow in wisdom, age and grace.

New to Charlotte or Bellevue? New to our Parish Community?

This time of year normally sees a number of new families move into the area. I’d like to offer my own personal welcome if you are new to our parish commu-nity or to Charlotte or Bellevue. I’m glad that you are

here with us and hope that you find a welcome home here within our parish community.

In order to take advantage of many of the pro-grams and ministries our parish offers and in order for those ministries to best serve you, please take a mo-ment to register with the parish.

Parish registration is a simple process: you can see me after any of the Masses and I will be most happy to assist you. You can call our parish offices (517-543-4319). Or you can stop by the parish offices at our St. Mary location in Charlotte, Monday through Friday, to register in person. This is also a perfect time to register your children in our parish school or to gather more information about our parish religious formation pro-gram.

We are ready to help you and to answer any ques-tions you may have. We also look forward to and en-courage your involvement in the parish. That’s what helps to make our parish into the community that it seeks to be. Thanks again for being a part of our parish community, and welcome!

The RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults at St. Mary and St. Ann

God works in many ways. Sometimes in our faith life, we are called to new places. In the Catholic Church, we have a process of Christian formation in which persons who are interested in becoming Catholic participate in a group process to learn more about our Catholic faith. It is a journey of faith and conversion. It includes people who have never been baptized. It in-cludes people who have been baptized in another Christian tradition. It also includes those who have been baptized as Catholics but who have not been brought up in the Catholic faith. If you or anyone you might know is interested in becoming a Catholic, please feel free to contact me, Deacon Tom, or Brian Epkey. Also, if you have a child older than the age of 7 who has not yet been baptized but who you would like to have baptized, Brian Epkey, our parish coordinator of faith formation, is more than happy to work with families in preparing older children for baptism.

One of the keys is to remember is that each of us knows someone who is hungering for this journey of faith—a non-Catholic spouse, a family member, friend or co-worker. A personal invitation from you could be all that it takes!

FAITH FORMATION

FAMILY CHAT AFTER MASS If needed, you can review the Sunday readings or hear the homily again from myparish app.

The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today, we hear another story of the power of faith. When the Canaanite woman asks for healing for her daughter, Jesus tells her it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs. But she points out that she does not need to take the food—even the scraps will be enough. We, the baptized, are invited to the feast at Christ’s table. The food is so rich that even one crumb would be enough.

Ask your family to pay attention to the moment at Mass when we say, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

What do the words said before receiving Holy Communion mean in light of today’s Gospel?

Living the Word God always hears what we ask in prayer and gives us the healing we need. At home, read today’s Gospel aloud to your children. Ask them to imagine that the woman followed Jesus for two hours, begging him to heal her daughter. Sometimes in life, we have to be as focused and persistent as this woman was with Jesus. We must have a persistent faith in God.

An Update about Pig Palooza and Harvest Wheelers If Pigpalooza happens this year, it won’t be the

same as in years past. So much of the success of the Palooza rests on the generous donations of local mer-chants and businesses. This year, it just doesn’t seem right to ask those donations while the uncertainty and negative impact of the economy is still so prevalent. We may be able to host the parish picnic part of Pigpalooza, but even that won’t be quite the same, as so much depends on the guidelines that are offered by the State of Michigan regarding large social gather-ings.

The same applies for Harvest Wheelers. Much of the social activity that is normally part of Harvest Wheelers is not possible under current guidelines. We will maintain the raffle portion of the Harvest Wheel-ers, but even that will be slightly different from years past.

More about both of these events as details be-come available.

MORE NEWS

In the past several bulletins you may have seen that we are encouraging folks to sign up for “Flocknote” which is a tool to help the parish com-municate with our parishioners (you) more effec-tively. It will allow us to send email or text, send polls out when we need input from you, sign up easily for various groups or events, and group shar-ing. Essentially, it is a database that is built around communication rather than a database built on col-lecting data.

We are going to phase Flocknote in over the next several months and be completely operational by January 1, 2021. To help us ensure we have the most current and accurate information for you, go to https://stmaryandstann.flocknote.com and click on “sign me up.” You won’t even have to re-member a password. Note that it will only ask you information about yourself, not anyone else in your household.

The question has been asked, “How is this differ-ent from myparish app?” The app is a tool that puts a lot of parish information at your finger tips, from the parish calendar, bulletin, live stream mass, prayers, daily readings, and much more, where as Flocknote is a platform where we can send out

communication via email or text and know who has received it or not. Yes, we can send out notifi-cations or messages on the parish app but we have no way of knowing who has received it, and not everyone has the app. Communication, as we dis-covered this past March, is spotty unless we do a bulk mailing to all households. Even then, there is no guarantee we reach all of our parish families.

Have you changed addresses? Dropped your landline? Switched to a different email account? In order for any of this to be effective, it is essen-tial that we have current, up-to-date contact infor-mation from you. If, in the past, you have wished for better communication from the parish, please help us in our endeavor to stay connected via Flocknote. Thank you!

Through your generosity we collected 26 units of blood on Wednesday, August 12, during our blood drive. 1 unit of blood has the potential of saving up to 3 lives. That means that through our donations we have the potential of saving 78 lives. Thank you so much!!!

Fun Facts:

32,000 units of blood are used each day in the United States

Every 3 seconds someone needs blood.

NOW MY PARISH WANTS ME TO SIGN UP FOR FLOCKNOTES?
