HistoryIn 1913 the Misercorde sisters were asked to establish a hospital for youngwomen, mothers, and abandoned children. The hospital was called St. MaryInfant Home and St. Mary's Hospital. In 1954 the Misercorde sisters began theconstruction of the Scarborough General Hospital and in 1956 it was establis
The sisters maintained ownership of the hospital until 1972, when they came the conclusion that they could no longer manage the hospital financially, aturned it over to the Province of Ontario. During this time the Misercorde sistetook an opportunity to purchase additional land near the Scarborough GenHospital, and created Rosalie Hall also in 1956. During the late 1800's there wmany prostitutes, and sailors would often at times come into Quebec and cafter the women. Mother Rosalie whom Rosalie Hall was named after was waware of this type of behaviour, as she was often chased too. She would takthe women and their children into her home and provide them with shelter, food, and any other necessities they needed. During this era Mother Rosalienot very well liked, and treated poorly for her kindness and generosity towarwomen. This is what essentially conceived the notion of Rosalie Hall.
Rosalie Hall initially started off relatively small as they (staff and clients) weresubjected to one section of the building. As time progressed in 1987 the sistebegan the expansion of Rosalie Hall. The Misercorde sisters renovated the firwing they had and added on an additional two wings to the building. In 198the sisters first introduced and opened residential availability to young mothand their children. The residential area houses up to twenty five women andtheir children. The opportunity for fathers to be involved in such situations isavailable, however it is during scheduled supervised hours. Sleep over visits hyet to be permitted.
