On Friday, September 25, twelve excited parishioners from St. Boniface

and St. Mary boarded a motor coach and left Troy at 6:00 am for our

journey to Philadelphia in hopes of seeing Pope Francis. The trip was

coordinated by Pat Smith of St. Patrick’s Church in Troy and arranged

through Wendt Touring of Steubenville. With a stop in Cambridge, Ohio,

for breakfast and to pick up our tour guide, Andrew Koehler, a student

from Franciscan University in Steubenville, we were on our way.

As a group, we prayed the rosary for a safe journey and for the health and safety of Pope Francis.

After a few stops for rest and meals we arrived in Pennsylvania for dinner at an authentic

Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant and then to the Sight & Sound Theatre for a production of Joseph, a

musical based on the Old Testament story of Joseph. Afterwards, we traveled to the Hampton Inn

in Ephrata for our three night stay.

We left the hotel early Saturday morning for the Amtrak station in Lancaster to board the train to

Philadelphia. After an approximate one hour journey, we arrived in Philadelphia. From there we

walked the many blocks to pass through security to enter the area open to the public for the Pope’s

visit. Security personnel were visible everywhere to keep order and ensure safety. There were state

police, local police, police from other cities and states, National Guard in addition to Secret Ser-

vice. In addition, there were Red Cross and EMT personnel visible.

Jumbotron screens were scattered throughout so people could view the different events and also

listen to the entertainment provided by various groups representing the many countries and

cultures participating in the Festival of Families. We watched the Pope celebrate Mass in the

Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and caught a glimpse

of him waving from a window from the adjacent building after

the Mass. We also watched his speech at Independence Mall. Many

took advantage of visiting the souvenir and food tents and observ-

ing all the people.

Sunday morning was also an early start to catch the train to Phila-

delphia. Several took advantage to attend morning Mass at the

cathedral and to stake out a spot for viewing the papal parade and

view the 4:00 pm Papal Mass. Continued on Page 8

St. Mary Altar Society:

The ladies have been keeping busy now that their meetings have resumed. They served as

hostesses for the photographers when pictures were taken for the picture directory, served

as hostesses for the Coffee and Donuts Breakfast in November, helped out with food

donations for the Women's Christ Renews His Parish Retreat, contributed funds toward the

purchase of the antique brass sign board used to show the mass readings, and paid for a

new bulletin board. Some of the members also agreed to be prayer partners for the

Confirmation Student Candidates and the RCIA Candidates. In December, Christmas

cards and flowers were delivered to our parishioners who are confined to the local nursing

homes. And, they will be selling desserts during a fish fry in Lent.

Adult Faith Formation:

Mass for Deceased Parishioners: On November 1, a Mass was held in memory of deceased parishioners from

both parishes at St. Boniface. A reception was held in the Caserta Center afterwards.

Coffee and Doughnuts: Held on the first Sunday of the month after the St. Mary 9:00 am Mass

and St. Boniface 7:00 am Mass. This is a time to enjoy refreshment and fellowship with fellow

parishioners. Sponsored by Family Life of both parishes, the Adult Faith Formation coordinates

the different groups hosting. If your group would like to host, please contact Barb Kohl

(773-9205 or bkohl@woh.rr.com).

Christ Renews His Parish: A program of personal renewal for men and women of

both parishes. Led by parishioners from both parishes, the women’s was held on Oc-

tober 17-18. The men’s program will be held February 20-21. Twelve–fifteen pa-

rishioners are needed to hold a retreat. To attend please contact Fr. Tom at the parish

office, Cathy Oda (773-7098), Chuck Tyler, (879-3431) or the AFF members listed

below.

Lent: The Commission is now in the planning stages for the upcoming Lenten season. Stations of the Cross

will be offered on Thursday evenings at St. Mary and Sunday

afternoon at St. Boniface. Times will be listed in the bulletin

during Lent.

Rediscover Jesus: A book by Matthew Kelly was distributed

one per household at all the Christmas Masses. The book can

be used for personal reflection or in a group discussion. If you

would like a book, call Linda or Theresa at the parish office.

The Adult Faith Formation Commission is comprised of

members from both St. Boniface and St. Mary parishes, Fr.

Bolte, and Diane Mengos. St. Boniface members are Jim

Niswonger, Nancy Peltier, Julie and Chuck Tyler. St. Mary

members are Ann Koehl, Barb Kohl (chairperson), Cathy

Oda, Gloria Stonerock, Sr. Joan Clare Stewart, and Noreen

Wendeln.

Meetings are held at the North Street Campus on the third

Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. Anyone interested in

being a part of this commission are welcome to attend or

contact any of the current members. Questions concerning

annual Christmas project — the Shut-ins And Needy Treats Appeal. Your generous

With the start of the New Year 2016, many of you will be cleaning and or-

ganizing your homes, attics, basements, garages, and other storage spaces.

Please consider donating all of your no-longer-needed or wanted items to

the 4th Annual Mission Committee Rummage Sale, to be held on July 9 &

10, 2016, in the Caserta Activity Center.

We now have available year-round storage space for any donated items.

Call Linda Richards, 773-1327, or Theresa Henderson, 773-1656, at the

Parish Offices to let them know when you will be bringing your items to

store in anticipation for the next Rummage Sale.

If you have larger items such as furniture, etc., but have no one to help you

haul it to the Parish Garage, simply call Don Stonerock, 773-2400, and he will

arrange to have someone come pick up your items. We have enlisted a group

of “Mission Movers” who will arrive at your doorstep with a pick-up truck or

trailer. Tax Donation Forms are available upon your request.

St. Boniface Celebrates 150th Dedication Anniversary

1865 was a monumental year in history — the abolishment of slavery, assassination

of President Lincoln, the end of the Civil War — and liquid soap, the coffee percola-

tor and billiard ball were patented. For St. Boniface Parish, 1865 was the year con-

struction (at a cost of $31,659) of the current church was completed.

When the congregation outgrew the original church on Adams Street, the parish

purchased lots available on the corner of Miami and South Downing Streets, began

construction, and on October 26, 1865, the “new” church was blessed.

In 1891, stone steps and a cement platform were laid in front of the church and a stone

walk was added on Downing Street.

Major renovations took place in 1901. The sacristies and sanctuary were added. During this process an area

30’ x 60’ was excavated under the new sanctuary and partly under the existing structure, creating the

“chapel” where St. Boniface School students attended daily Mass until 1920. Also at this time, the flat

ceiling was replaced with grand, steel, triple arches; stained-glass windows (the current ones), oak pews,

communion rails, and pulpit were donated by parishioners.

The steeple clock was installed in 1913. In 1920,

the vestibules and passageway to the parson-

age/rectory were added; stuccoing was applied to

the red-brick church and parsonage. The “chapel”

gave way to a central boiler room designed to heat

all four parish buildings. Interior renovations

occurred in 1930 for the 75th Anniversary.

In 1969 following the guidelines of the Second

Vatican Council, major changes were made to the

sanctuary, sacristies, altars, statues, etc.

1975: Southeast entrance ramp installed;

1977: Southwest entrance ramp installed

Preparation for the 125th Anniversary (1980) began in 1977 — the interior & exterior were painted, new

concrete walks installed, wooden doors refinished, etc. In 1979. the area under the sacristy once again

became the location of a chapel and a meeting room — St. Clara Hall/St. Claire Chapel. Perpetual

Eucharistic Adoration began in 1990 in St. Claire Chapel. In 2010, the chapel was renovated for the 20th

Anniversary Celebration of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration.

In 2007, the Rebuild St. Boniface Drive was launched to raise funds for urgent and critical needs —

refurbish stained-glass windows and window sills, repair water damages and masonry, redecorate interior

and exterior, complete electrical upgrades, and purchase pews/kneelers, and flooring. The church was

closed from January 3 until Easter Vigil in 2011 as renovations were completed.

On the weekend of December 5 & 6, St. Boniface Parish

celebrated its 150th Anniversary. Fr. Thomas Bolte and

Fr. Charles Caserta concelebrated the Saturday 4pm Mass.

Fr. Angelo C. Caserta was there in spirit, as he was unable to

be physically present.

Judy Lohnes designed special music & a

program, parishioner photos were taken, and

the Family Life Group provided cupcakes at

each Mass; coffeecake for the celebration

after 10:30am Mass in the cafeteria.

Our Fall was a happy one for the young people of our Catholic Community. My focus has been on families

with Grade School Youth. Those parents with children in the Wednesday Night Faith Formation Program

and the School have been inspiring for me to meet.

Our Wednesday Night Program is led by an

amazingly loving and faithful Catechist

Ford, Cyndi Cianciolo, Tiffany Hatcher,

Carrie Garman, Joan Knapke, Geri Ryan,

Our “Guidance Counselor” is Lola Echman,

who talks with the occasional “Time Out”

students and magically helps them re-focus!

Our weekly support staff is Anita

Polakowski, Stacy Pratt, and Kyle Pratt.

The Wednesday Night youth enjoyed many special activities woven around their Faith Learning. They

spoke with St. Nick about the good they can do, they sang to BINGO participants about Jesus and wished

them a Merry Christmas, and they collected Toys for the Bethany Center. They enjoyed our Bethany Center

speakers, learned about the Pope, received and prayed the Rosary, and learned and sang about St. Francis.

They are a kind and joyful group!

I enjoyed meeting the Second Grade and Eighth Grade families preparing for sacraments from Piqua

Catholic School and the Wednesday Night Program. I enjoyed helping Miss Lohnes train 4th Graders as

servers. I hope to meet more families throughout the parishes.

Our Second Graders were 100% wonderful in preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, celebrated on

December 12. They completed a family poster project and were well-prepared for the sacrament. I felt that

each child left the church that day touched by God’s great love for them.

Our Eighth Graders completed their final Spiritual Journey this past November. They went to St. Ignatius

Maronite Catholic Church and to the Dayton Women and Children Shelter of St. Vincent de Paul. They

were treated with great hospitality, and their gifts to the Shelter were hugely appreciated.

My focus for the second semester is teens. During the month of December, I met with seven “Leader

Teams” who helped design Youth Nights for the year ahead. I am extremely grateful for these leaders!!

Youth Nights will occur on the first and third Sunday of each month, starting at 5:15 in the Caserta Center.

They include witness talks, small group discussions led by teens, yummy food, sports and games, Charity

Tables, and a Voting Table for service and social events. The Youth Nights will culminate in the 7 PM

Mass, where many teens will continue as leaders. Please pray for the success of our Youth Nights and other

events that will also be added to our Teen Program.

Please pray also for more parents and adults in our parishes to

become Virtus-certified so that we have the proper staff to serve

our young people.

I close with a Big Thank You to those who support Piqua Catho-

lic School and those who support the $7 A Month Club. The

celebration of our faith with the young is the greatest gift we can

give them!! Thank you for making that happen for all!!

Reason for the Season (Front Page) Continued: The crowd was even greater than on Saturday with

people from all over the United States and many countries. The atmosphere was one of joy and

excitement with everyone sharing where they were from as we waited in anticipation for his arrival. The

crowd cheered when various motorcycle and bicycle police came by and even the buses transporting the

many priests to the stage in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum where the Mass was to be celebrated.

You knew when Pope Francis was coming your way by the loud cheering of the crowd. The joy and

emotion could be felt by all as we were only a few feet away as the pope-mobile passed by with Pope

Francis smiling and waving. You felt he was looking directly at you! When the Mass began, the crowd

fully participated in the responses and singing. Since the homily was given in Spanish, the translation

was scrolled across the screen in English for those watching. The Sign of Peace, was special for me as a

Latina woman who had been near when the Pope passed by not only wanted to shake hands but wanted

to embrace me. Everyone was able to receive communion as over 800 priests and deacons spread out

along the barriers to distribute to the crowd.

On behalf of all the pilgrims, I would like to thank Fr. Bolte for his blessing for our journey, for the

prayers and good wishes for our trip from many people. Please know that all of the parishioners of St.
