101 Questions about the Catholic Mass (continued)

Breaking of Bread – Lamb of God

76) Who is the Lamb of God? Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei). St. John the Baptist spoke to his followers when Jesus approached him at the Jordan, saying: “Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world.” Jesus is the Lamb of the New Covenant. Drawing from the symbol of the lamb sacrificed in the Passover of Israel from Egypt, Jesus is the new Lamb. We pray to Jesus, the Lamb of God, for His mercy and peace, just before receiving Him in communion. 77) Why does the priest break the host on the altar after the Lamb of God Prayer? Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with four great Eucharistic actions: He took, blessed, broke, and distributed the Bread (Matthew 27:45). The breaking of the Bread signifies that in communion we who are many are made one body in “the Bread of Life,” Who is Christ (see John 6:48, 1 Corinthians 10:17). The Mass is the Sacred Meal where we share table fellowship with Christ in His Family of love and unity. After the breaking of the Bread, the priest commingles a small part of the Host into the chalice to signify that Christ’s body and Blood are reunited in His Glorious Resurrection, in Heaven, and in the Eucharist. 78) How do the faithful make the final preparations before receiving the Eucharist? The faithful echo with ardent faith the words of the Centurion to Christ: “Lord, I am not worthy… only say the Word and my soul will be healed.”

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST Holy Communion

79) Who may receive Holy Communion? The persons who may receive Holy Communion are those who are baptized and in full communion with the Catholic Church, who have received their First Holy Communion and are in the state of grace. They must not have eaten at least for an hour before receiving Holy Communion (including chewing gum, coffee, tea, soda, and candy; but not including medicine and water). It has become customary in some places for those not receiving Communion to come forward while crossing their arms as they approach the minister of Communion, to receive a blessing instead of the Eucharist. If a person is conscious of having committed a mortal sin, he must (in most cases) go to confession before receiving Communion.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If you could somehow transport a third-century Christian into your twenty-first-century Sunday Mass, once the initial shock wore off he or she would be more or less at home with the structure of the first part of the liturgy, the Word. The second part might be more difficult to comprehend. The stumbling block would be the book. We have a book, a missal that is set down on the altar with a very precisely prescribed set of words for the priest to say and the people to sing at the Eucharistic Prayer. In the early days of the church, there were no set "formulas" for this prayer. The ancients would have raised eyebrows at our "bookishness" since they preferred to let the prayers roll forth from a gifted leader of pray-er. There was a basic shape to the prayer of thanksgiving, and almost general agreement that the words of Christ at the Last Supper ought to be included. By the second century, Justin Martyr wrote that the presider "gives thanks at some length . . . and when he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present give their assent by saying 'Amen.' " In the world before books, people could memorize long passages of prose and poetry, and so it is easy to see how particular phrases or expressions passed from church to church. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Its getting to be that time of year!!! Don’t forget our Parish Fireworks Booth!!!

For more than 45 years the Parish Fireworks booth has raised funds to support Parish Youth Programs. The booth is located in Corti Bros parking lot and operates from June 29th to July 4th annually. This year, the Fireworks team will be pre-selling vouchers after Masses in the month of June. The St. Mary Parish Fireworks booth needs your help! It' s a chance to complete some of your par ish hours before school even starts!!

We are looking for the following: Marketing/Social Media - help us get the word out to parishioners and school parents to remind them to go to our booth and support the Parish youth. We are primarily in need of one or two people to manage this entire process, working with the New Media team at the Parish. The TNT organization provides us with e-flyers, videos and other support, so you don't have to reinvent the wheel, just get the word out. Please contact Mary Willett at 916-715-0122 with questions or to volunteer. Voucher Pre-Sale Management - help us organize and sell $10 vouchers that can be redeemed at the booth. There will be a classroom competition for the school in May, and sales after Masses in late, May, June and the first week of July. Also the potential for sales at St. Mary Summer School. Please contact Mia Odell at 916-607-0939 with questions or to volunteer. Transportation - every morning, that the booth is in operation, we will need to pick up our product (warehouse is located near corner of Power Inn Rd. & Fruitridge Blvd) and deliver it to the booth. We usually have a small trailor to load up but are in need of folks with hitches to help with transportation. Every evening we will need to return all product to our storage unit at the warehouse. You will have help with packing up the product and inventory. Please contact Kirk Stinson at 916-290-2639 with questions or to volunteer. Work the Booth and Sell, Sell, Sell - two hour shifts will be available every day, training will be provided. This is a fun environment to volunteer, children under 18 are not allowed in the booth per CA State Law but kids can be outside with balloons, flags and noise makers getting the attention of passerby’s. Volunteer as a family and receive Parish hours for the adults and Community Service for the kids. Please contact David Malarkey at 916-524-2253 with questions or to volunteer.
