This weekend I would like to write about another silence. The silence of God when we pray. I am not much of a moviegoer; however I recently went to see the movie SILENCE, directed by Martin Scorsese. This movie is based on a book written by a well-known Japanese Christian author, Endo Shusaku. It is the story of Jesuit missionaries in Japan in the 1600’s, and the hidden Christians that they encountered. If you get a chance, I heartily recommend this film. It gives a good insight into the torture and persecutions that the Christians endured. For more than 250 years, Christianity and all contact from the outside world was outlawed in Japan. The Christians that remained were forced to practice their faith underground; if they were discovered they were often tortured, even martyred. The film portrays the life of these heroic Christians, and the lives of the missionaries sent to them. The “silence” that this film refers to is the silence from God when we pray to Him and seem to hear nothing. Those who were being tortured for their faith prayed, and it seems that God wasn’t listening. Time and again in the history of Christianity in Japan, believers were told that if they just renounced their faith, by trampling on a cross (called a fumie) they would be freed, escaping the horrendous torture awaiting them. Why did it seem that God was not there for them? Wouldn’t God help them in their moment of most need? One of the missionaries continues to see the haunting face of Jesus over and over again, the face from a picture hanging in the seminary where he studied. It is a face he loves and serves; but the face never speaks. It remains silent when the priest is chained to a tree to watch the Christians die, silent when he asks for guidance on whether to commit the trampling on a cross (fumie) to set them free, and silent when he prays in his cell at night. Although the movie ends in seeming ambiguity, the author’s intent was to confirm that God is not silent; He does speak to us, just not always in the ways that we would expect. Joyful News

Last weekend, I wrote about silence in our church, and the need to respect the Eucharist and others who are praying and listening to God. This weekend I would like to write about another silence. The silence of God when we pray.

I am not much of a moviegoer; however I

recently went to see the movie SILENCE, directed by Martin Scorsese. The Christians that remained were forced to practice their faith underground; if they were discovered they were often tortured,

even martyred.

It remains silent when

the priest is chained to a tree to watch the Christians die, silent when he asks for guidance on whether to commit the trampling on a cross (fumie) to set them free, and silent when he prays in his cell at night.

Although the movie ends in seeming ambiguity, the author’s intent was to confirm that God is not silent; He does speak to us,

just not always in the ways that we would expect. Continued on pg. 3

Thirteen of our high school youth group teens attended the CYO Rainbow XXXV Youth conference held on February 11-12 at the Marriott Hotel at the Renaissance Center in Detroit along with approximately 1600 teenagers and adults chaper-ones and Youth Ministers from parishes all over the archdio-cese of Detroit . The theme this year was "Give it all to God." Being a teenager and balancing life can be stressful in so many ways. The most important part of faith is keeping God the fo-cus of your every day life and seeing what that balance looks like for your own personal life. Our keynote speakers were Fr. Tony Ricard who is from the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Kevin Szawala (a.k.a. Mr. Peace). we also celebrated Saturday evening Mass with Archbishop Vigneron. Religious Articles

It appears there is a glut of religious articles received in the mail that

some folk don’t know what to do with. My advice is to first stop it at

the source. Write to the sender and ask that no more be sent. If

that does not work, I suggest you burn what is burnable and bury what

cannot be burned. This is the most reverent thing you can do to stop

the stock pile of unwanted religious articles. We do not have an outlet

for them at this time. Please do not bring yours to church in the hope

that someone will take them. Thank you.

The Bottom Line On a very cold, snowy Sunday in February, only the

minister and one farmer arrived at the village church. The minister

observed, “Well, I don’t guess we’ll have a service today.” To which the

farmer replied, “If only one cow shows up at feeding time, I feed it.”

Fr. Ken (continued from front page)

In our own lives, as well, there are times when we wonder if God is really there. Is He listening to me? Doesn’t he know the troubles in my life? I try to do everything for God, where is he? Sometimes our image of Jesus is one of majesty and power; the one who can do anything and

everything. As we can learn from the movie, Jesus is also the one who suffered for us and is suffering with us. Jesus al-lows our weaknesses. Jesus, too, was weak and powerless. Often times, the answer from God is there, we just don’t hear it or don’t acknowledge it. Great saints, such as St. Theresa of Calcutta (Mother Theresa), asked God why He seemed to remain silent. Sometimes the deepest answers and love come in mo-ments of silence. All we need to do is listen with an open heart.

St. Vincent Notes... As we begin to settle into the New Year and prepare for the Lenten season our Conference of St. Vincent de Paul wishes to thank the parish community, on behalf of those we serve, for their efforts to "Help Us Help Others". Since October 2016 your support allowed us to provide (19) families with utility, bedding and rental assistance totaling $2,848.64. Through the Michigan Energy Assistance Program we prevented service shut-off for (4) families for a total of $1,875.87. In addition we issued vouchers for clothing & furniture to SVdeP Thrift Store for (2) families totaling $145.00. We also provided referrals to St. Mary Outreach Center for (30) families & to Newburg United Methodists' non-food pantry for (21) families. We gratefully acknowledge the blessings of our Pastor, Fr. Ken, in the support of our Conference’s works of mercy. Peace, Sharon Sabat

A warm welcome to our newest Brother Knight;

Derik Peterman! This past weekend our very own Parish seminarian received his Knight-hood Degree and con-

tinues the strong tradition between the Knights and our Seminarians. It may not be widely known that the Knights pro-vide yearly financial aide to our Semi-narians. Our Parish council as well as many surrounding area councils provide stipends to our seminarians to help with their Studies. May God Bless your vo-cation Derik!

THANK YOU Thank you for truly being the hands and feet of Christ for the homeless breakfast at Newburg United Methodist Church in Livonia on February 1st.

A heartfelt thanks to the 13 "joyful mis-sionaries" who braved the snow and icy roads to provide breakfast for the home-less guests at 5:30 am!

Of course it wouldn't have been possible without those disciples who donated money, food items, baked muffins or egg casseroles!

A special thank you to Heartland Mar-ket, who donated a case of bananas for the banana muffins, which were baked by a homebound senior!

Our monetary donation of $220 helped towards the cost of paper products, laun-dry and transportation of guests to and from the Cass Community for a week.

A special thank you to Jerry Borycz who not only led us in prayer and grace be-fore breakfast was served, he also re-turned that evening to lead a first time ever round table “Bible Chat.”

NUMC thanked us for the continued generosity of our parishioners and for helping them out with our 4th breakfast.
