Pastor’s Corner

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost one of the most solemn feasts in the Church’s liturgical

year ranked only behind Easter and Christmas in prominence. In the old liturgical calendar this feast was cele-

brated over eight days and was known as the Octave of Pentecost. The subsequent Sundays were named in

reference to Pentecost and would be called the First Sunday after Pentecost, etc. This practice ended with the

reform of the liturgy. The Sundays throughout the year are called ordinary time, such as the Tenth Sunday of

Ordinary Time.

It is ironic that St. Pope John XXIII prayed and called for a renewal of the Church by the Holy Spirit at the

start of the Second Vatican Council and the liturgical reforms stemming from the Council lessened the signifi-

cance of the Solemnity of Pentecost and its reference to the Holy Spirit in the Sundays following Pentecost.

For the great event of Pentecost gave birth to the Church by the descent of the Holy Spirit on Mary and the

Apostles and it is this same Spirit that continues to lead and guide the Church today. There is nothing ordinary

about the Church and the men and women who comprise it for each of us has been called and sent by Christ to

continue His saving mission. The Church by her very nature is evangelical, that is, called to share the good

news of salvation Christ won for us; each one of us has a role in God’s magnificent plan of salvation.

The Acts of the Apostles is sometimes referred to as the Gospel of the Holy Spirit for it shows the power

and efficacy of the Holy Spirit at work in the Apostles and the life of the early Church. The first reading for

this Sunday describes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the first disciples, who came down upon them in

the form of a strong diving wind with tongues as of fire resting on the head of each one. This gift of the Holy

Spirit transformed the timid disciples of Jesus into His bold and fearless witnesses. The Apostles began to

preach to the people of many nations gathered in Jerusalem and each one heard them speaking in his own na-

tive tongue. At the end of their preaching Peter urged the people to repent and be baptized in the name of Je-

sus Christ. On that day 3,000 souls were baptized.

The Holy Spirit has come to undo the confusion of Babel and bring together into one family of faith all

the nations of the earth through the Church. The Acts of the Apostles continues on with the teaching of the

Apostles and the opposition they encounter from the religious authorities, the same ones who put Jesus to

death. Eventually the deacon Stephen is martyred at the hands of Saul and James is killed by the sword of

Herod and the Church undergoes persecution. Through this persecution the Church spreads to Antioch, where

the gospel is first preached to the Gentiles setting the pattern throughout the history of the Church; the blood

of martyrs is the seed of faith.

In Antioch Barnabas and Saul are set apart by the Holy Spirit for the mission to the Gentiles. They en-

joyed great success and Paul eventually takes the good news into Europe when he travels to Philippi and to

other cities in Macedonia and Greece. Eventually both Peter and Paul will find their way to the eternal city of

Rome and bear witness to the faith and ultimately face martyrdom; Peter was crucified upside down and Paul

was beheaded because he was a Roman citizen and could not be crucified. It was their martyrdom that gave

Rome its prominence and it is where the successor of Peter presides over the whole Church in the person of

the Pope.

Even though the gospel has been proclaimed to the four corners of the world the missionary thrust of

the Church continues under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Sadly this includes many countries in the West

whose cultural heritage derives from the faith but whose faith has withered. By virtue of our Baptism we are

called to continue Jesus’ saving mission by being His witnesses in all we do.

Happy Feast Day!

Fr. Cannon

The birthday of the Church! After receiving the Holy Spirit, the apostles spoke of the “mighty deeds of God.” Each of us has experienced mighty deeds: the birth of a child, pass-ing a difficult test, getting a job, attending a peaceful, happy death – these can be mighty deeds of God in a person’s life. Do you have the courage to speak of this to others? The Holy Spirit gives each of us special Gifts, including courage and wonder in the Lord. Unwrap these gifts, put them to good use, and renew the face of the earth.

The St. Vincent dePaul Conference will meet on Friday, May 29 at 9:30 a.m. in the Parish Center.

In previous years, the Mass Intention Book for the follow-ing year would become available for booking Masses right after Labor Day. This year, however, we are changing that precedent and we will be opening up all of the 2016 Masses beginning on June 15, 2015.
