Dear parish family, 1 Sunday of Lent Year A The season has begun - From ashes to the blooming of flowers, from death to life. We begin the spiritual jour-ney from Ash Wednesday to the Easter. Lent is here – short for the length of days, practically 40 days spiritual re-treat. Its 40 days leading to the celebration of the paschal mystery: passion, death and resurrection of Jesus’ for our redemption. 40 is a symbolic number in the Bible. The Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt after they wandered 40 years in the wilderness. This was seen as a time of purification and preparation for entry into the Promised Land. Moses stayed at Mt Sinai for 40 days and nights in prayer and fasting (Exodus 24:18). Elijah journeyed without any food for 40 days at the mountain of God. (1 Kings 19:8). Jesus was in the desert for 40 days to prepare himself for the mission that the Father had sent him to accomplish. Thus the church rehearses this in Liturgy.

Jesus has to be in solidarity with our humanity to redeem humanity. He subjected himself to temptations at the desert. He showed us we could defeat the devil by sheer patience and following just the natural course of life. In effect telling us that there are much more important things other than one’s own physical needs. He refuses easy way out, quick fix or short cuts or magic solutions. He rebuked the devil by saying; “man does not live by bread alone but also by every word that comes from the mouth of God." He showed us that the way to the fullness of life is the pa-tient ways of love. The way to be closer to God is humility and the way to win the battle against the devil is the way of the cross. And the way to convince disciples is the persuasion of truth. Lent is a time in which we re-evaluate the cravings of our hearts. Do we crave for more material things, pow-er and influence for selfish ends, or have we strive to do God’s will? This season should be a time in which we go and rediscover the Christian virtues and values that we have forgotten. Throughout Lent let us create a silence within us, to look at ourselves as if from the outside, to moderate our outward activities and distractions. Doing so, we will hear Jesus knocking on the door of our hearts and open our hearts to let him enter and change our hearts this Lenten season. Blessings to all and have a good week. Fr. Tony

Padre Tony
