June 28, 2020

Last weekend, I promised to highlight some of the gains that will come from the Area Catholic Community, and I intend to, but first I must perform one of the less palatable tasks of a pastor: administer some correction. I recognize that the unknown is scary, and whether truthfully or artificially, the parish of St. Mary Help of Christians has been a relatively stable fixture in the lives of many parishioners. Much about parochial life has had to change, recently, on account of the pandemic, and much has or will change, more permanently, as the parish integrates into the Holy Saints ACC. For even the most senior parishioners, this is more than just a new pastor or the moving of a statue – these are big, scary changes, which might well change again in even the near future! This is a time when people have many questions and concerns. Even as staff, we too have questions and concerns. All your questions and concerns should be and will be addressed. Please remember to call the Parish Office during office hours. Office Hours for SMHOC are M-F, 7:30am-Noon. Office Hours for St. Wendelin/Holy Cross are M-TH, 8:00am-4:00pm. Let’s try to refrain from calling the office staff at home unless it is an emergency and keep the business of the parish at the parish. Talk of staff points to one immediate gain from the ACC: an additional priest. Fr. James Statz serves as pastor of St. Anne’s in Kimball and St. Nicholas in St. Nicholas. However, as the ACC forms and progresses, he will start to minister as well in the other three parishes of the ACC, including St. Mary Help of Christians. Fr. Statz, unlike me, has years of pastoral experience. Therefore, he brings a wisdom which otherwise would be lacking in our ACC. He follows Our Lord and His Church not just out of youthful zeal but from long practice and real charity. There are other gains, too, which I point out in the insert in this weekend’s bulletin.

Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Matthew Crane
