Dear Friends, First and foremost, congratulations to all our teens who celebrated the Sac-rament of Confirmation on October 26 here at St. Mary’s with Bishop Bar-ber. Congratulations and thanks, also, to the parents, sponsors, and cate-chists who have guided these Confirmandi to this point in their lives. Let us continue to pray for them, that the Holy Spirit will guide and bless them throughout their lives. Please remember that, beginning next weekend, we will be preparing throughout the month of November for the Dedication and Opening of our new Adoration Chapel. So far, everything is pointing to the comple-tion by the end of November (God willing!) and we hope to have the Dedication on Sunday, December 8, at the 11:00am Mass with Bishop Barber as our Pre-sider (December 8 is “officially” our feast day, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, even though on the liturgical calendar we won’t be celebrating this until Dec. 9). As a help to our preparation, we will have a Parish Mis-sion on Monday and Tuesday, November 4 and 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the church. All are invited and encouraged to attend this event and to pray throughout this month for the successful completion of this project. May God continue to bless us and fill us with love and peace. Father Fred

There will be a second collection next weekend for Parish Mainte-nance. Thanks for your help in

keeping the parish running!

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach en-courages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassion-ate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced be-cause of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The first-graders are learning all about mindfulness with our school counselor, Mrs. Martinez. With the help of some of our fifth-grade buddies, they are engaging in a variety of hands-on Mindfulness Centers, using everything from glitter jars, bubbles, balloons and butterflies to help them practice mindful breathing in calm, peace-ful and fun ways. They have been able to apply all they learned from the centers to help them qui-et their hearts and ready them-selves for prayer throughout the school day.

Join us for coffee, donuts and fellowship next Sunday, Nov 3, after the 9:30 Mass.

We are finally doing it! The Fil-Am (Filipino-American)Ministry of St. Mary Church is holding their FIRST MEETING on November 3, after the 11:00 am Mass in the St. Elizabeth Hall next to the gym. We invite you to join the organization and we would like to hear your ideas. Fr. Dante will be the club’s advisor. Do let us know if you are coming by calling Elena Gaoiran at 925-525-7089 or emailing her at: [email protected]

VETERANS DAY PRAYER SERVICE

St. Mary School will be celebrat-ing all our wonderful veterans with a special prayer service on Fri-day, November 8, at 8:15am in the church. All are welcome to join us for this special liturgy honoring all who serve our country.

Today we had a possible save at the vigil. Here is the story: A young couple pulled into the park-ing lot this morning and proceeded up the stairs to the clinic. Three of us were praying, and I called out, “Hi guys! We are here and have resources for free pregnancy care and services if you need!” The couple didn’t respond, but contin-ued to walk inside. About ten minutes later, they came out and stood at the bottom of the ramp, talking with each other. The young man put his arms around the wom-an’s waist, affectionately, but it was clear that he was trying to coax her to go back inside. She shook her head, no, and we could tell that she clearly did not want to go back inside. They talked for a few more minutes and then got in their car to drive away. As they were driving out, I was able to of-fer them two brochures listing available resources. The woman reached across the driver, and gladly took the information. I told her we would be out here if she needed help. About 10-15 minutes later, the same couple drove up in front of the clinic. The man saw me, and I was holding a picture of Divine Mercy Jesus. I pointed to the picture, shook my head and just mouthed the words, “No, no.” The man then drove off, and, as of 3:00pm had not returned. SO, please pray for this woman. It was clear they were conflicted, but for today, they chose life. Please hold them in continued prayers--that they will come to understand and appreciate the life that is in them.

Molte grazie to the Knights of Columbus and to all who came to show their appreciation for our priests last Saturday. The pasta dinner was delicious and the Nea-politan ballads, bellissime!

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
