Todays Readings First Reading — God has restored the land, and brought great joy to the people (Isaiah 8:23 — 9:3). Psalm — The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Paul exhorts the believers at Corinth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divisions among you (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17). Gospel — After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Galilee (Matthew 4:12-23 [12-17]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Seeking the Light In today’s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into rela-tionship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes: “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, perhaps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his with-drawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Welcome

Dear Parish Family, Two of the coolest Catholic Sporting events are com-ing up! On February 15th, Steps for Students is happen-ing downtown, which will benefit Catholic education and our own St. Martha’s Catholic School. It is an in-credible sight to see 10,000 students and their families running a 5k through the streets of downtown Houston raising money and awareness for Catholic education!

To sign up, please visit www.steps4students.org and support this won-derful cause. The other exciting sporting event coming up to support the Catho-lic Church is the Priests vs. Seminarians basketball game on March 6th. We have a new venue because the event has grown so much, so this year’s game will take place at Delmar Coliseum near the Galler-ia. This year should have a special interest for St. Martha’s because we’ll have a representative from each team playing in the game. In addition to me representing the priests, Jacob will be playing for the seminarian team. It would be great to see a lot of St. Martha’s people supporting this event and vocations to the priesthood. Tickets go on sale February 1st on www.houstonvocations.com and they are rea-sonably priced ($5 for adults and $3 for kids). I want to thank you for your support of both of these events and look forward to seeing a lot people supporting Catholic education and vocations to the Church. God bless and have a great week! Fr. T.J.

Stewardship of Treasure “BRING YOUR GREATEST GIFTS TO

THE LORD” 2020 DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND

Our 2020 Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) be-gins THIS WEEKEND. Christ calls us to serve

one another and reach those who are sick or in need, to bless and serve them. Your compassion and generosity is needed by the Archdiocese. When you share your greatest gifts with the Lord, you enable us to reach out to people in this parish and throughout the entire Archdiocese through more than 60 important ministries. All registered parishioners will receive a letter from Cardinal DiNardo, along with a personalized pledge card, inviting you to Bring Your Greatest Gifts to the Lord. Pray about your DSF 2020 commitment, then complete the enclosed pledge card and return it via mail in the special envelope provided or bring it to Mass and drop it in the collection basket. If you prefer, you may go online at www.archgh.org/dsf to make your donation. Your generosity will allow our Catholic community to continue many vital programs and services. Our parish goal for this year is $305,000.

Celebrate the Gospel of Life Novena For Life, Jan. 21-29

O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life: Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and

love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolute-ly, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civili-zation of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. — Evangelium Vitae

— Evangelium Vitae

THOUGHTS FROM THE LOFT Does everything in the church have an official name? Specification is a beautiful thing. Knowing the names for certain items clears up confusion and misunderstanding when talking to other Catholics. “I’ll meet you inside the church but not actually in the church area.” Do you mean the Narthex? Here are a few words you might want to add to your vocabulary. The nave of the church is the large area of the church where the pews (long benches) are located. It is called a nave because it is shaped similar to the nave of a ship (upside-down). The sanctuary is the elevated area that contains the altar, the ambo, the chairs for the celebrant/deacon, and the tabernacle. The ambo (or lectern) is the place reserved only for the proclamation of sacred scripture and sermons/homilies. Some churches have a pulpit and its only purpose is for the homily/sermon given by the priest/deacon. The altar is the large table upon which bread and wine are transformed into the true presence of Christ. The tabernacle is the direct house for any bread that has been transubstantiated into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ (it is impossible to un-transubstantiate). The missal (or missalette if it does not contain all the readings for years ABC) is a book that helps pa-rishioners pray/sing the Mass. It contains the Ordinary and Propers of the Mass. The Lectionary is the book from which Lectors read the first and second. The Psalter is the book from which the Psalmist sings the Psalm. The Book of the Gospels contains only readings from the 4 books of the Gospel and is only read by members of the clergy. The paten is a small plate used to hold Eucharistic bread. The confessional is the enclosed area from which the sacrament of reconcili-ation occurs. The choir loft is the area from which the choir presides. The cantor stand is like an ambo but is found with-in the nave of the church and is used to lead the congregation in singing and provide announcements. Hopefully you knew all the words I listed above, but if not, I would like to personally welcome you to your own personal revelation. Pax, Matthew Mondragon “fides quaerens intellectum” – St. Anselm

Martha’s Kitchen could not exist without your gen-erous donations and the hours given by our dedicat-ed volunteers who work so hard serving the hungry a nutritious meal five days a week. As we start this new decade please remember those who are suffer-ing the pangs of hunger and continue your support of our Outreach Ministry. May God Bless You!
