A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pax et Bonum!

Today we gather together to celebrate the Fourth Sunday of our Advent season. We are

now just days away from Christmas! What a wonderful time of the year! We welcome all of our

guests and visitors to Mass this weekend! In particular, we welcome home our college students

who are trickling in from around the country. It is great to see you again! Welcome home!

The theme for the Fourth and final Week of Advent is Peace. After all the prayers, after all the listening for God in

our lives, after all the sacrifices to grow in generosity, after examining our consciences and dealing with our sinfulness,

we are invited by God to the best and deepest peace. We hear “peace” today, especially we think in terms of the

world’s version of peace, and so much of it is so hokey. Real Peace is so much more than just the absence of war or

conflict. Real Peace makes you whole and solidifies your entire life around Truth. Real Peace is so much more than

Bob Dylan songs and flowers painted on Volkswagens. The kind of peace that God is offering us, the kind that true

Faith brings, can empower you and see you through anything! How did martyrs get burned at the stake or have their

bodies flayed while they were still alive? It is because they had that extraordinary peace from God on the inside, in

their hearts and souls, that enabled them to persevere through anything! We desperately need that same peace in our

lives. And God wants to give it to us! This final, short week of Advent is our opportunity to pray for that real peace and

put it into effect in our lives. The peace of being a Christian is strangely a part of our Faith that we talk very little about.

I have always thought this odd, because the peace that Christ offers us is perhaps the greatest reason for being a

Christian today. You can’t buy this kind of peace. You won’t find this kind of peace in any drug or alcoholic drink.

Popularity or power won’t get you this kind of peace. There is no gratification of any of our bodily appetites that can

come any where near the deep satisfaction that we experience in His Peace! That peace is at the heart of why so

many men and women in the Church down through the ages have become priests, and sisters, and brothers, and

deacons. There simply is no substitute. And once you have truly experienced it, you know that you can’t live without it

for even a second!

We need to all pray for God’s peace. We always want peace between nations, and peace in the workplace, and

peace in our schools. We want peace in families, and in marriages, and even in church communities. But sometimes

before we can ask for it in any of those places, we’ve got to start with our own hearts and souls. These final days of

Advent are the perfect time to pray that Peace and to work on growing that kind of Peace inside of us! Let us be

people of peace because we have received it from our God!

This weekend, hopefully you’ll notice the beautiful new picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe that is now hanging in

our Church Narthex, just outside the nursery. The painting is a gift from last year’s St. Maria Goretti School’s graduating 8th

Grade Class. A group representing last year’s graduates met with me just before the Mass on December 8, to present

the gift to me for the entire Parish. Father Travis blessed the image on December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of

Guadalupe, after the school Mass. It is important to note that in the apparition of Mary to St. Juan Diego at Guadalupe,

Mary appeared as a pregnant woman. She is not holding the child Jesus in her arms, as in other apparitions, she is

carrying Jesus still in her womb. At Guadalupe, Mary seems to be reminding us once again of the great miracle that

happens in the womb at the beginning of life! It is my hope that the new image will inspire all of us to greater love for

Christ, His mother, Mary, and for all life!

We’ve got a great week coming up! Christmas Eve Masses are at 5 pm and 7 pm. And Christmas Day Masses are at

12 am (midnight) and at 10 am. If you are going to be traveling, please be safe, and pray with us wherever you going. We’ll

look forward to seeing you when you get back. A reminder that Christmas Day is a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics. It

is by far the Holy Day with the best Mass attendance! Come early to get a seat! Merry Christmas everybody!

In Christ,

Fr. Kevin

Faith isn’t really faith until it’s all that you’re holding on to.

Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but

with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all

do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!

God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Ryan & Jessica Sheely, Igor & Ana Oliveira

In the first reading, God promises King David

that his house and his kingdom will endure forever.

It is through Mary’s “Yes”—“I am the handmaid of the

Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.”—

that the promise finds fulfillment

REFLECTION FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

In today’s Gospel we hear, “Do

not be afraid Mary, for you

have found favor with God.

Behold you will conceive in

your womb and bear a son,

and you shall name him Jesus.

He will be great and will be

called the Son of the Most High.” Think of a time when

you were facing serious difficulty. Was God calling you to

greater faith? Were you able to trust God?

RCIA NEWS

RCIA will not meet again until January 5, 2015. Please

continue to keep all those who are on this journey in

your prayers.

How did you hear about SMG?

When we moved to Westfield, we were looking for a new Catholic church to call home. We looked online and read the outstanding reviews about SMG and knew this was the place for us. We absolutely love being a part of the SMG Family.

Hobbies:

Golfing, softball, going on walks with our dog, travel-ing, and experiencing new food and wine

Best thing about SMG:

The Westfield Community is everything we were look-ing for. Everyone is so pleasant and kind. We receive that old-town charm feel from everyone who lives in Westfield.

Favorite Prayer:

“Love is patient, Love is kind, It always protects, Al-ways trusts, Always hopes, Always perseveres. Love Never Fails.” —1 Corinthians 13:45-78

Favorite Saints: St. Catherine of Alexandria & St. Andrew

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE TO YOU—

The blessedness of Christ-mas Is the miracle of birth, When Christ, a child, called Jesus, Was born upon this earth.

A star shone in the heavens As darkness touched the night,

Attracting the poor shepherds Who watched in awesome fright.

The wise men in the cities Had heard the story told,

That a King, Lord and Savior, Lay in a manger cold.

The shepherds and the wise men Who saw the brilliant star,

Followed it in wonder To Bethlehem afar. And there they found the manger

Enshrined in golden light, Where laid the Christ Child Jesus

In swaddling clothes of white.

They knelt before their Master As angels sang above, A song that made it Christ-mas

So filled with joy and love.

May your Christmas be filled

with Joy and Love!
