No doubt, she felt horror at first, but by the end of the encounter she realized she had been honored by God. “Give me a drink,” he says. A simple beginning to an conversation that would go so much deeper than the well beside them. And when she doesn’t want to give it to him, he surprises her by leading her to God. The broken woman beside Jacob’s well finds herself being led into the most wondrous of truths: God intends to help people to worship God. Before the conversation is over, Jesus has told her that what God really wants from people is for them to worship in spirit and in truth. God wants worshipers who engage with him, spirit to Spirit; God also wants worshipers who are willing to encounter the truth as they worship, both the difficult truths about God and the much more difficult truths about ourselves. Just before this talk about worship came up, Jesus told her the hard truth about what a mess her life was in, how she had been bounced from man to man, and the one who had ended up with her had not bothered to honor her with marriage. She sought to escape from that by asking the difficult questions about God, but that didn’t really worked. She cannot escape from herself by running toward God, because God always leads us back to ourselves. But when we worship God, something amazing happens. When we are truly with God, we find that it is okay to walk into the deepest darknesses in our hearts. The most dreadful and evil of sins are not impossible to encounter because when we are with God, his love helps us to overcome them. When we draw near to God with our spirits to worship him, his Spirit confirms to us again that we are loved, and the most difficult truths become safe. When we worship God, God expects us to be alive in truth. No self-aggrandizing pretense, no hypocritical facade, no false front to impress the neighbors, but the complete, honest, unvarnished, zero-self-protecting truth. When we worship God, he wants us to come with our spirit’s vulnerable and open, available to the Holy Spirit’s work, because he is always active when we draw near to him this way. And God is so very good that it its entirely safe to approach him in this painfully honest, dreadfully vulnerable way. He always works for our good when we worship him the way he wants to be worshiped. This picture of God is so good that before the encounter is over, the woman has run away from Jesus, but not to escape him. It is to draw others to him. Because this way of being with God is so wonderful, who wouldn’t want to share it? - Ethan Brown

September Prayer Requests

September Missions Update:

Greetings from our family. This is our 12th year of laboring in the mission work in the kingdom of Thailand. God has blessed and brought fruits in His work. Up to the present time we have had 2

new congregations established (Kalasin and Kuchinarai), 2 dying congregations have been

re-established (Amnatcharoen and Roi-Ed). Plus, a small, longtime established group of believers in Surin province who have been taught through our weekend Bible school. We are thankful for these 5

faithful congregations here in the NE region—a total of 93 believers, 10 little children altogether, who desire to learn, live and serve God together.
