Every year is meaningful at St. Luke’s Episcopal Day School and each is marked by new experiences for our students. Whether it’s the first year of school, learning

to read, having a FInS buddy, serving as an acolyte, moving to the middle school division or participating on an athletic team, the “firsts” that mark the year are memorable. The opportunity to share in these experiences is a gift, and none of it would be possible without each member of our community. In the last year, 100% of our faculty, staff and board of Trustees supported the school with a philanthropic gift. We believe in St. Luke’s. A record level of participation by parents, grandparents, alumni and friends are evidence that you believe in St. Luke’s too! Each gift to the school made it possible for us to expand the opportu-nities of our program.

Last year, we made technology purchases and improvements that ensure our students access to excellent opportunities. Upgrades to our wireless network have made our laptop con-nection fast and efficient and 20 new ipads and an ipad cart will see use throughout our school this year. Our teachers spent

time this summer familiarizing themselves with apps that will enhance learning and student engagement in their classrooms.

The installation of twelve security cameras in critical locations help us monitor who enters and exits our campus in an effort to tighten our security measures. This summer, 350 feet of fencing was installed to improve the appearance and security of several areas of our campus. The Pre-K playground has a new 10-foot fence separating it from the Water Company and there is a new fence between the 4th and 5th grade classroom build-ings. Wrought iron security gates were installed in the Witter Hall breezeway and between the lower school office and the Finance Office.

Bathrooms near the 4th grade classrooms were renovated last year and this summer the Schwing Building bathrooms were completely updated with new flooring, stalls, automatic toilets, sinks and hand dryers.

Our teachers’ commitment to professional development keep our classroom instruction progressive and relevant. In addition to many individually attended conferences and workshops, all of our faculty participated in SMARTboard training this year, and a leadership team of faculty and staff began training

in Responsive Classroom, a school-wide, social-emotional learning initiative, that will launch in January.

Our Parents’ Guild and Shark Bites organizations provided

additional support that helped enhance our program. Shark Bites fundraising provided for the purchase of baseball field drags, a four wheeler, storage shed, batting cage turf, and team shirts for all middle school sports teams. This summer, Shark Bites was able to purchase a high jump pit and make softball field improvements including leveling the field, topping it, replacing the fence and building dugouts. Shark Bites also hosted soccer and basketball camps for our elementary school sharks.

Parents’ Guild funding continues to provide a majority of fund-ing for library acquisitions, art supplies, extracurricular club expenses, subscriptions for SMARTBoard software, the extras that teachers request for their classrooms and so much more! Our middle students spent hours working with the new Mac laptops that Parent’s Guild purchase last year and our 3rd and 5th grade students and teachers love the activities made possible by their newly installed sink.

At the close of the 2011-2012 school year we celebrated two milestones. Our largest class of 8th graders became the newest

class alumni. They’ll attend high schools very familiar with the many qualities of St. Luke’s graduates.

The highest praise we receive

from our graduates is that they were prepared for the rigor and challenges of high school. It’s a process that begins in Pre-K and continues through 8th grade. It’s an inspiring teacher that helped them learn to love books, an “aha” experience with a new discovery, a moment of confidence gained in a class performance, an opportunity to serve others and member-ship on a team. Each day is a gift, and we appreciate each person who helps support our school. We are thankful!

Golden Sharks

Last spring, Judy Powers and Pam Kimbrough created a grandparents’ guild called the “Golden Sharks”. Mrs. Powers and Mrs. Kimbrough (shown here with Mrs. Darlene Foster) organized a coffee to give grandparents the opportu-nity to learn more about the Golden Sharks, meet other grandparents, consider how they might become involved and enjoy talking about their favorite topic….GRAND-CHILDREN! Early Childhood Education Conference

Almost 100 pre-school teachers attended our 3rd biennial early childhood education conference last fall. St. Luke’s teachers pro-vided a morning full of activities and workshops to engage and encourage teachers of our young-est Baton Rouge area students.

St. Luke’s Class of 2004

St. Luke’s first 8th grade class graduated from high school this year! The class of 2008 returned for a Senior Reunion held in Pope Hall last spring. Student reminisced about their years here and enjoyed catching up with each other and former teachers. These students have been accepted at and will be attending the following universities this fall: LSU, TCU, Louisiana Tech, Centenary, Belmont, Southern Miss, and Clemson. Congratulations to the St. Luke’s Class of 2008.

New Mac Computers

St. Luke’s students spent hun-dreds of hours working with our new Mac computers. The Macs have given our students access to a whole new world of design programs and music technology applications!

Food Drive

Students at St. Luke’s Epis-copal Day School in Baton Rouge collected over 2,000 non-perishable food items as part of a “Soup”er Bowl Food Drive. The drive was held for the week before the Super Bowl Game. Donated items were given to the Baton Rouge Area Food Bank and Southeast Ministries.

Our teachers and staff are constantly seeking to learn and grow by engaging in classroom-enhancing opportunities. In 2011-2012, donations made to the Annual Fund continued to provide the majority of St. Luke’s funding for professional development. Our teachers are also very adept at finding and attending free workshops. We are grateful for the example our faculty members set for their students by pursuing their dreams and remaining active, life-long learners

Dr. Chris Rust Middle School Science teacher

Dr. Rust was selected to be a National Sci-ence Teacher Association Academy Fellow for the 2011-2012 school year.

The NSTA New Science Teacher Academy, cofounded by the Amgen Foundation, is a professional development initiative created to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence, and improve teacher content knowledge.

Dr. Rust, why did you ap-ply for the fellowship?

“It looked like an excellent op-portunity to network with other professionals in my field and get high quality (and free!) PD hours geared specifically for a science teacher with my level of experience”. How did the fellowship benefit you personally and professionally?

“I was able to try out some new teaching techniques and get im-mediate feedback from mentors. I met other science teachers from across the country, and was able to attend a national conference that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to attend. I learned about so many resources on the web that are available to me to learn more about the content I

What made you chose this conference?

“There are presenters that come from all over the country and in some cases the world to share their expertise. There are hundreds of sessions available for you to choose to attend. It was so hard to look through the catalog and decide what session you would like to attend at that time slot. At night, we would go through the book, and decide what sessions we want first, second and third at each time slot for the next day. That way we would make sure we were able to attend different sessions and share what we learned. We went to between 4 and 6 sessions each day”.

What were the best sessions you attended?

“We had several favorite sessions. Of course, we both attended the sessions with Dr. Jean Feldman and Steve Spangler. Dr. Jean always has great tips and ideas for transition time, fun songs to teach the children as well as books to make with the children. Steve Spangler was another fun science session. This was my (Bonnie) first time seeing him so I was amazed at some of the fun experiments he showed us to do with our class. After his session, I purchased some fun things to put in my science center from him. I also was able to sign up and have him email me weekly science experiments. Some of these experiments I have shared with the other kindergarten teachers and we have included them in our science units. I also enjoyed a session called – “Kindergarten Literacy Centers: A Hands-on Approach to Teaching Reading”. I brought back lots of ideas for my literacy center, writing center and reading center. I liked The Best books for Preschool children put on my Redleaf Press. The representative read about 20 books

both fiction and non-fiction, we were also given a list of at least 200 books. There are so many children’s books on the market, so it was nice to get a comprehensive list of quality books. I purchased many of these books and then gave the list to Mrs. Canezaro.”

What ideas did you bring back to your classrooms?

We brought back many ideas – literacy center ideas, songs and books to share with the children and many science experiments to do with the children.

How do your professional development activities impact your teaching and your students?

Whenever we come back from a conference we are so excited to share the new things that we have learned. The children get excited too when they see the new centers we make for them or the new songs and stories that we share.

St. Luke’s Athletics

Athletics at St. Luke’s continues to grow and thrive! This spring we added track and field to our list of competitive sports. Shark Bites continues to play an integral role in supporting, enhancing and growing our program. This year, they hosted Saturday soccer and basketball camps for lower school students interested in those sports. Shark Bites provided team shirts for all of our team sports and hosted a wonderful end-of-the year banquet. Volunteers staffed hours of concession stand sales and cooked and served jambalaya dinners for the annual sale.

Grandparents’ Day Book DonationsA love of reading is a hallmark of a St. Luke’s student. It takes a large amount of books to meet the demand of our students. Last year, our students read a total of 11,511 books and earned a total of 22,822 accelerated reading points. We pride ourselves on our well-stocked shelves containing the latest in children’s literature. On Grandparents’ Day, many of our visitors donate a book or several books to the library in honor of a special child or children in their lives.

John Allphin Leadership Scholarship Fund

The family of John Allphin, a long-time parishioner of St. Luke’s, could think of no better way to memorialize their husband, father and grandfather than by establishing a St. Luke’s schol-arship fund in his name. A respected businessman, real estate appraiser, Realtor and public servant, Mr. Allphin, served the Baton Rouge community throughout his life in many civic and community organizations. He was elected an East Baton Rouge Parish Councilman and Mayor President Pro-Tempore. He was inducted to the Baton Rough High School Hall of Fame and selected as the Outstanding Young Man of the Year in Louisiana by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The John Allphin Leadership Scholarship will annually recognize a student who exemplifies Mr. Allphin’s commitment to leadership and public service.

Community Garden

Community Garden

The St. Luke’s Community Garden is the brain child of Pre-K teacher, Kathy Stenhouse. Mrs. Stenhouse and Pre-k teacher, Ann Giles, use Junior Master Gardener Curricula in their classrooms. St. Luke’s students learn about growing plants from seeds and even tend their own playground gardens.

Mrs. Stenhouse wanted to furhter enhance the opportunities her students had. She envisioned a community garden where more students could participate in gardening, as could their parents, church members and anyone else in the community.

Mrs. Stenhouse’s vision became reality last fall when donations paid for construction of 12 raised beds along the back-side of the St. Luke’s Middle School campus. Anyone can use a bed for only $65 per year. Gardeners avoid chemicals and use organic dirt and compost. Some gardeners plant flowers while others grow fruits and vegetables.

“This is a joint venture between the school, church and community that will forge relationships between these groups and increase interest in organic gardening,” Stenhouse said. “And that is good for everyone”.

The Baton Rouge Garden Club donated two satsuma trees to the garden and Arbor Day Chair, Merle Shannon, spoke with the Pre-K and 8th grade students about the significance of Arbor Day. Then members of the club assisted the students in planting the trees.

Research shows that shared gardens stimulate social interaction and create opportunities for recreation, exercise and education, while providing nutritious food, reducing family food budgets and conserving resources.

Once again, the St. Luke’s Parent Guild came through with a year full of successful fund-raising, friend-raising and service events. Room Parents worked hard all year long to make sure there were drivers for field trips, supplies for Christmas ornaments, and parents to set-up for plays (just to name a few of the things they do!). Hundreds of meals were prepared by St. Luke’s families for families experiencing a tragedy, an illness, surgery or birth of a child. The Used Uniform Committee had a record-breaking sale raising more than $2,000!

Bayou Bash was “Under the Big Top” this year featuring a field of fun games and activities and culminating in a magic show. Elegance and “Martha Stewart”esque creativity made Teacher Appreciation Week special for our faculty and staff. Giving Through Everyday Living (GTEL) was a part of our everyday lives as we clipped community coffee labels, collected coke caps and shopped at Albertson’s and Target. Library Highlights Week inspired students and parents alike to Read! Read! Read!

Swamp People were everywhere at this year’s auction and more than a few shouts of “Choot ‘Em” were heard as parents outbid each other on jewelry, trips and student excursions. We couldn’t have ordered a more perfect day for our Grand Garden party as hundreds of grandpar-ents and “grand” friends visited their special St. Luke’s students and toured our lovely campus.

The entire Parents’ Guild team is to be congratulated for on outstanding year! Thank you to the St. Luke’s community for supporting all of our fundraisers and service events! Thank you also to these donors who made a financial or in-kind gift to Parents’ Guild this year.
