ST. LUCIE WEST — For a brief time, a group of 9-year-olds from Port St. Lucie were rated No. 1 in the country. Team Easton, a travel baseball

team, came in first at the Win-ter Championships in Altamonte Springs in December and was ranked No. 1 by the United State Specialty Sports Association. The ranking was brief because the team was “kicked upstairs” into the premier division after the vic-tory. In that division, their rank-ing was lower. Being No. 1 was a special mo-

ment for the players and coaches of a team that was started only a year ago by Tony Germano. Ger-mano grew up in Port St. Lucie, played varsity football for Fort Pierce Central High School and received a baseball scholarship to Hillsborough College. My doctor sent me to Joe for my hearing loss. At first I was a little concerned because I have heard so many negative things about hearing aids and I was not all that excited about my visit to Mutter’s Hearing Center. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Thanks in part to the tireless efforts of State Rep. Larry Lee Jr., D-Port St. Lucie, who is also a PGA Village resident, hundreds of thousands of children across the state will have a chance at a bright future.Many of those children are located right

here in St. Lucie County.Gov. Rick Scott recently approved $9

million in the state budget for the Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Florida. Lee, a member of the Education Appropriations Subcommittee, pushed for the funding within his 13-member committee.Lee presented the Boys & Girls Club of

St. Lucie County with a symbolic check for $9 million on Dec. 19. The club will learn in late January just how much of the $9 million will be designated for St. Lucie County. It’s estimated more than $200,000 will go to St. Lucie County.The millions go directly to Florida Alli-

ance of Boys & Girls Clubs, which will disburse the funds later this month. All of the Boys & Girls Clubs in Florida

are members of the alliance which rep-resents over 237 clubs from Pensacola to

Key West that served more than 135,000 youth last year. They have over 14,000 board members,

adult staff and program volunteers that assist with after school care, summer programs, assistance with homework, reading, computer work, delinquency prevention and mentoring programs. Boys & Girls Clubs are the place where

young people are provided with the tools and guidance to achieve academic suc-cess, become community leaders and lead healthy lifestyles, a St. Lucie Club representative said in an email.Lee stressed the importance of the clubs

throughout the Treasure Coast.“It’s very important, because if you look

at all the recent shootings and violence … ,” Lee said. “We have to support organiza-tions like the Boys & Girls Club, not only at a state level, but at a local level.”Lee promised he’ll crusade on this year

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that enough good men do nothing.”

I’ve heard this quote all my life, but apparently, according to a quick web search, it’s not clear that the most-attributed-to “au-thor,” 18th-century Irish states-man and philosopher Edmund Burke, ever said or wrote it. It matters not in this context; the meaning of the quote is what’s important, not where it originat-ed. That quote’s been on my mind

recently because, during this “slow news” holiday period, I’ve been watching episode after episode of ABC’s “What Would You Do?” on CNN. (Hey, I prefer reruns of that show to repeats on the riveting lives of British royal family. Really? There’s so little going on in the U.S. that we have to reach “across the pond” for our broadcast news?) The philosophy behind “What

Would You Do?” epitomizes the above “triumph of evil” quote, em-phasizing the last part, “… that enough good men do nothing.” In the show, actors are involved in scenarios in which they engage in socially unacceptable behavior

that they play out in a public setting, and cameras are rolling, capturing scenes of unsuspecting members of the public who either look the other way, or step up to “right” a “wrong.” This particular evening, the

episodes I watched involved a man very vocally hitting on his son’s girlfriend in a busy bar/restaurant; another man loud-ly protesting over his breakfast that he was physically ill after learning his female server used to be a man; and an obnoxious New York City nightclub doorman refusing to allow entrance to a young woman whom he deemed

too “unmodel-like” to be part of the dance floor crowd, even to the point of asking her to step on a scale to prove she was weight-ap-propriate. It always amazes me that

there’s a tiny minority in any giv-en group who have the courage to speak up when they observe the mistreatment of another human being. We’re talking social set-tings here, where a modicum of civility would make a world of dif-ference in the outcomes of similar situations as I just listed. But I applaud and commend

the handful of individuals who are willing to, and DO, intervene when someone is obviously being bullied, instead of looking the other way and adopting an “it’s none of my business” attitude. Those who step up to “right a wrong” are true heroes in my book, just as much as is a fire-fighter running into a burning building to save a life. Do the afore-mentioned sce-

narios rise to the level of “evil?” I think so. You don’t have to cold-heartedly murder someone and dismember the body to fall into the “evil” category. Malicious-ly hurting another person (which means you have intent to harm),

physically or emotionally, is also evil. I’m a mother, so I feel somewhat

qualified to speak up on this topic. I raised my son to embrace the ideals of honor and integrity, and he embodies them – I see and feel it in every conversation I have with him, and in observation of how he moves through this world. As we enter this new year of

2014, I encourage you to make a resolution to do the same. You don’t have to be caught on cam-era on a national TV show to “do the right thing,” or, as my pub-lisher would say, to make the right choice. From being polite to other drivers in traffic, to speak-ing up when a parent is yelling at his child in the grocery store, resolve to improve the human condition by stepping up when remaining silent would allow “evil” to perpetuate. You may not always be successful in your efforts, but at least you will be able to look yourself in the eye in the mirror the next morning, and know that you have done your part to make a difference in the world. year round. Wayne Cimperman’s son Wes, a third-grader at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, plays short-stop for Team Easton. “They practice three-four times

a week, every week throughout the year,” Wayne Cimperman said. “The skill level is unbeliev-able. The kids know how to turn a double play. It’s really quite remarkable. The coaches have a huge knowledge of baseball. They were pro or college coaches and the instruction is above and beyond.” Cimperman said that trav-

el baseball takes a tremendous commitment in time and financ-es. Participation can easily reach $10,000 a year per player. There are fees to join, dues, money for equipment and, of course, money for travel, including hotels and meals. Fields have to be rented and umpires paid. Cimperman said that when the

team is not practicing or playing, they are standing in front of gro-cery stores, trying to raise funds. Sponsors are very welcome, but the kids are learning that what they love to do costs money and effort beyond the playing field. They also learn that sometimes tournaments have to be canceled because parents don’t have the

money and the team did not raise enough. This year, Team Easton was

scheduled to play in a tourna-

ment at ESPN’s facility in Or-lando. The tournament required wooden bats, which is not the norm. The team didn’t have the

league baseball player and owner of Bravo Supermarkets in Port St. Lucie stepped in and bought each player a bat. The kids will be able to compete. For Wayne Cimperman, his

son’s love of the game is the rea-son he is playing. “I’m a football guy,” he said.

“My son played tackle football and baseball at the same time. He was playing every day except Sunday. I thought football was No. 1, but he said that he real-ly loved baseball and wanted to focus on it.” While Cimperman is proud of

his son and all the kids, he’s not sure that specializing at such a young age is the best thing. He remembers when there was a season for football, basketball and baseball. He thinks that something is lost when kids con-centrate on one sport so early. “In my opinion, playing more

sports makes you a better, well-rounded athlete,” he said. One thing he does like about

any sports participation is the hard work, the learning to take instruction and the focus. “It’s just like in the classroom,”

he said. “The coaches are the teachers.” Cimperman said that even at

this level, most parents are realis-tic about goals. “The highest hope, the best

thing they could strive for, is to be on a high school team or go to college and play on a team,” he said. “Most parents don’t think (their kids} will be in the NFL or major leagues.” For now, Team Easton’s 9-year-

olds are just happy to have won a championship. There aren’t many kids that age who can make the claim.

manship and leadership,” said Meltzer, who also heads Leader Cheer in Port St. Lucie. “They would cheer other teams on and wish them good luck.” In its five months in existence,

the squad has shown exemplary work ethic out of the stage spot-light, Meltzer said.“I’ve seen the leadership in

those girls grow in the past few months,” Meltzer said. “I coach a lot of cheer teams and took over as head coach because of their initiative. I’ve never seen that in a cheer team.”The team was established and

organized by the charter school girls, themselves.“We were determined to start a

squad because we wanted to have more opportunities for girls at our school to play sports,” said 10th-grade student, Samantha Bisbano, 16.Bisbano, who has six years of

cheerleading under her belt, was the sole girl with such experience. The rest learned the tricks of the trade and were competition ready in a few short weeks thanks to the team’s unique ability to communicate and look after one another, one team member said.

“I absolutely love it … all of us girls have grown so close to-gether,” said 10th-grade student Brianna Zirger, 16.Each week, the girls organize

their own practices, arrange for transportation, raise funds for uniforms and other supplies and even participate in weekend pa-rades around the Treasure Coast.Both Samantha and Brianna,

who founded the team, said es-tablishing the team also taught them a huge lesson in responsi-bility.“So much work went into it.

We were planning every single week and every single day to get money, supplies and coaching,” Samantha said. “I learned a lot of responsibility, having to keep phone numbers and papers to-gether and having to remember every single detail.”The school’s Principal Erika

Rains said she couldn’t be more proud of her girls.“I think it’s exciting. It is a great

example of what these kids can do when given the freedom and the opportunity,” Rains said.Although there’s more work to

be done to prepare for a poten-tial completion in mid-January, the girls are proud of their recent accomplishments.“It’s amazing to see how it start-

ed with just two of us and now we have 12,” Brianna said. “More girls want to see us succeed and go further than we already have.”

was charged with a civil infrac-tion for destroying text mes-sages. Each infraction carries a fine of up to $500 each. Martin admitted her wrongs and paid a $250 fine for her infraction. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz and Council-woman Michelle Berger were not charged with any wrongdoing.

By convincing all the Democrats and Republicans living in safe districts to vote for the other party to fill Congress with Dem-ocrats in Republican seats and Republicans in Democratic seats. Murphy laughed. “I love it,” he

said. Congressman Patrick Erin Mur-

phy is an oddity, which he said makes him feel at home in the 18th District. He knows that he’ll have to work hard to convince voters to keep him in the seat if he runs in 2014. Good, he said. The Democrat fills the state’s 18th District, a place not tailored for being blue. Or really for being

a Republican either. “It’s helped me through this

partisanship in the Congress,” Murphy said. Murphy said that being a Demo-

crat in a shaky seat has made him listen to ideas and opinions no matter where they came from. “When you’re in a seat like this,

it’s a constant reminder to do that, no matter who you are,” the Congressman said. The recently reminted district

embraces St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver of Palm Beach County’s north-eastern side tossed in. Between St. Lucie and Martin, there are 106,473 registered Republican voters. Democrats claim 101,896 registrants. Another 63,198 vot-ers registered in minor parties, or without affiliation. Far more than enough to scratch off the

gress, 30, was born in the roar-ing Reagan years, which he em-braced by joining the Republican Party. Murphy swapped party affiliation weeks before announc-ing his first congressional run in 2012. Fewer than 2,500 votes separated his opponent, Allen West, and him in an election with more than 331,000 voters.Murphy took the oath of office

on Jan. 3, 2013. This last year in Congress has

been marked by unusually tense relations in a highly divided government. Those tensions culminated in the 16-day partial federal government blackout, Oct. 1 to 16. Murphy joined with other Flor-

ida representatives in approving legislation that would have se-lectively funded the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other government functions, during the shutdown. That bill, which had other provisions, also had to pass the Senate and get Presi-dent Barack Obama’s signature to be law. Democratic leadership in the Senate refused to consider individual spending bills such as that one from the House of Rep-resentatives, insisting instead for a complete continuing resolution or budget to keep the federal government fully operational. “The frustrating part is the dys-

function in Washington,” Mur-phy said. “The partisanship and gridlock.” He added, “Seeing that first-hand is very disappointing. The government shutdown is the epitome of what’s wrong with Washington.”Nevertheless, even as the gov-

ernment was blacked out, Mur-phy hosted congressional brief-ings about the environmental and business damage inflicted by the infamous Army Corps

of Engineers’ large releases of nutrient-rich waters from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee waterways. Those releases adversely affected the entire Indian River system. More than 20 members of Con-gress — Republicans and Demo-crats — attended the briefings to hear from expert and community witnesses. That, Murphy said, was his —

and other members of Congress’ — greatest accomplishment this last year. He said it was good to see and hear Republicans and Democrats unite in concerns about Florida’s waterways even as they remained deeply divided over federal budget issues. “I’m doing everything I can to

change the tone in Washington,” Murphy said. This coming year, he hopes

to get legislation passed that’ll speed federal efforts to reduce the need for future Okeechobee watergate openings. Also on the Democrat’s to-do

list is working out solutions to the unforeseen, and sometimes ignored, issues the Patient Pro-tection and Affordable Care Act creates as more of its provisions kick in. “I would like to see something

happen to improve the Affordable Care Act,” the congressman said. “There’re a lot of common sense tweaks that need to be done.” Also high among the congress-

man’s New Year’s resolutions is reducing the infamous backlog of VA claims. To do that, Murphy is working closely with Florida Republican Congressman Jeff Miller. The VA’s annual Performance

and Accountability Report, re-leased in December, gave many hope that the claims backlog is heading into the history books. It reports that about 418,000 veterans’ claims await decisions for 125 or more days. That’s about half as many as in previ-ous years.

stole Kylee Stevens’ brand new bike, which she received as a Christmas present, from the front porch of her home, at 105 Beach Ave., in the unincorporated River Park neighborhood, on Christmas

report, I was appalled that some-one would victimize a little girl on Christmas morning,” Sheriff Mascara said. “When I shared the story with my command staff, we agreed that there was only one solution: We had to reach out to Santa to get the bike replaced.” This morning, Sheriff Mascara,

said a major reason for selling the family dealership was losing their brother, Ron Shultz, a PGA Village resident, to congestive heart failure in May of last year.Ron Shultz was remembered by

all who knew him as an honest man who put his faith, family and employees at his car dealer-ship before himself.Bill and Jeff Shultz also want

to spend more time with their aging father and the dealership’s founder, Bill Shultz Sr., 86.“We both want to sit back and

enjoy life with our parents and family,” the younger Bill Shultz said. “Life is too short, losing a brother.”In a parting message to the

community they served and supported through regular char-itable donations, the brothers expressed a simple, yet heartfelt “thank you.”“Thank you for all the support

in the community. We’re going to miss them,” Jeff Shultz said.“It’s definitely been 43 great

years,” Bill Shultz added.

VERO BEACH — As the River-side Theatre celebrates its 40th anniversary season, last season is being celebrated, as well. The theater has been nominated for 25 Broadway World.com awards, Florida edition, for last seasons’ productions. Broadway World.com highlights

shows on and off-Broadway and in professional theaters around the country. Riverside Theatre performers and directors re-ceived nominations in all nine categories. Theater patrons have voted for their favorite perform-er, production or director online. Results will be announced in January. Riverside Theatre’s next produc-

tion is “Miss Saigon,” which will run from Jan. 14-Feb.2 The mu-sical, from the Riverside creators of “Les Miserables,” ran for more than 4,000 performances on Broadway. It is the 12th-longest running Broadway musical. “Miss Saigon” is an epic mu-

sical with dramatic sets. Based on Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly,” it tells the story of an American

soldier and a Vietnamese girl who fall in love and are separated by the fall of Saigon during the Viet-nam War. Dana Costello plays Ellen in the

production. The young performer has appeared in many regional productions and made her Broad-way debut in “Jekyll & Hyde.” The actress said that “Miss Sai-

gon” is a wonderful show for cast and audience. “I think the music is beauti-

ful,” she said. “It’s a great score. The story is wonderful. I think it’s wonderful when a musical is based on history. The charac-ters are so well-written that you feel for them. It’s hard to choose who’s right and wrong, which is a good thing.” Costello said that while the sets

and scope of the show are epic, the show, itself, is personal. “It’s a heart-wrenching story,”

she said. “There’s no way not to have your heart breaking while watching it unfold. The music is

big and what it’s about is deep. It’s a really good show. I think ev-eryone will love it, but bring your tissues.” Costello grew up in New Jersey

and California and attended the Pacific Conservatory for the Per-forming Arts. She moved to New York City to fulfill her dream of appearing on Broadway. “I wanted to do Broadway, and

the first time I got on stage in New York was the greatest mo-ment of my life,” she said. Now she is looking forward

to leaving a cold New York for Florida in January. She said that she has heard good things about the Riverside, but only knows one other cast member. “I know one girl from classes

in New York,” she said. “That’s the great thing. It’s a whole new family of friends. Everyone gets friendly fast and you stay that way for the rest of your lives.” “Miss Saigon” will be presented

at the Riverside Theatre’s Stark Stage, 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, from Jan. 14-Feb. 2. Performances are Tuesday-Thurs-day at 7:30 p.m.; opening night, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.; and matinees on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $45-$70. Call the box

enjoyed a surge in popularity. Their music has been featured in more than 200 motion pic-ture soundtracks, video games, sporting events and TV shows including “Desperate House-wives,” “American Idol” and “Dancing With The Stars.” Mu-sic acts like White Zombie, Baha Men and Beyoncé Knowles have covered his music.
