COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL TEACHING Australia faces several major social and economic issues at this time in our history. Among the most challenging are the issues of asylum seekers, caring for the poor and vulnerable, child protection, strengthening families, ‘closing the gap’ between indigenous and other Australians, environmental sustainability, affordable housing, social harmony as well as the ongoing challenge to provide all Australians with health care and a good education. When forming opinions on any of these issues we need to refer to some basic principles. The following ten principles are the foundation of Catholic social teaching:

1. Human Dignity – Every human being is created in God’s image and likeness and therefore is valuable and worthy of respect.

2. Respect for Human Life – Human life at every stage of development, from conception to natural death, is precious and thus worthy of protection and respect.

3. Association – Human beings are social; therefore they grow and achieve fulfilment by association with others in families and other social institutions.

4. Participation – People have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good of all.

5. Preferential Protection for the Poor and Vulnerable – The Gospels call us to place the needs of

the poor and vulnerable first, so that their needs as well as the common good may be realised.

6. Solidarity – We are one human family and so our practice of love of neighbour must extend to the whole global community.

7. Stewardship – We show our respect for the Creator by our responsible use and protection of all

creation, from the use of personal talents and resources to caring for the environment.

8. Subsidiarity – While government has a proper role in promoting the common good, wherever possible decisions should be made by those who are closest to the people who will be affected by them, consistent with the decisions being well made.

9. Human Equality – the equality of persons is a matter of their essential human dignity; social and

cultural discrimination is not compatible with our understanding that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God.

10. Common Good – The common good requires that social conditions allow all people to reach their

full human potential and realise their human dignity. The challenge is to look beyond our own individual needs and apply the test we call “the common good”. We achieve “the common good” when we can reconcile both the good of the individual and the good of society. This will only happen when we make care for the marginalised, the sick, the disabled and underprivileged in our society a priority. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Year 11 (2014) As many Year 10 families are aware, it is decision making time for our Year 10 students as to whether they will remain at St Joseph’s Regional College or transition to Newman College for their Higher School Certificate journey. Last week students attended information evenings to help guide them in their decision. I would like to thank Mr Jim O’Brien, Mrs Cath Eichmann and Mr Ian Lutton for their exceptional work in presenting on the evening. Thank you also Leaders of Learning, House and Year coordinators, and our Careers team for attending on the evening. I would particularly like to pay a special tribute to our Captains, Ashleigh Hales and Andrew Newbound who addressed students and families. Each captain did a fantastic job; so much so that Ashleigh’s speech is published in this week’s newsletter. Andrew’s speech will feature in next week’s publication.

Ashleigh Hales’ speech: Good evening everyone, I am 23711028, but tonight you can call me Ashleigh. Like Andrew, I am honoured to be here this evening, as the current College Captain of the College, providing you all, both students and parents alike, with an insight of what the college can offer in senior years of secondary education. Though what we have talked about are just our experiences, and everybody’s journey is inarguably different and unique, whether you are a college local, a year 7 veteran or a warm welcomed new student; we felt it was important for you all to be prepared for what is to or what may come. So yes, everyone’s journey is their own, and similarly to my co-captain Newbound here, my personal experience at the college has also been atypical. I was a-part of the historical move that Modern History students will one day study, when the Regional and the blue uniforms too, moved from Walters street in town, to our new facilities here in Sovereign hills. And I also was fortunate enough to embark on and experience a 12month Rotary exchange to Austria after completing year 10, and upon returning fitted into a new cohort of peers for my final 2years of secondary schooling. Though it was a personal challenge readjusting to new people, new routine and new workload the college was a worthwhile and wise choice for me. I am currently studying Advanced English, Modern History, Mathematics, Maths Extension 1, Studies of Religion 2units and Drama, and studied German continuers and Extension History previously this year, so it is safe to say my school schedule is diverse, challenging and exciting. My pattern of study flipped completely since junior years, the responsibility and enjoyment of senior studies has meant that lunch is no longer the highlight of my 8:45 to 3:15 days (or longer on extension or drama practice days). I am learning what I want to be learning whilst preparing myself with the future. I chose my subjects because they appealed to me as an individual, and because of that, I found that I have been doing well in them. And though I didn’t choose my subjects with a direct occupation or objective in mind, by me obtaining an ATAR, means that my options are opened, and opened wide for me and my future after the HStressC. Though as a fellow student, I stress the importance of intention when selecting your senior subjects. Pick what you want to learn, because as we can tell you, if you do not enjoy what you are learning, you won’t want to learn it, nor will you recall the information come exams. School will be a chore and a bore when really your finals years should be the best ones. On another note, with the assistance of the senior pastoral groupings and as Andrew stated, the matured and reliable relationship with teachers and peers, the regional has rewarded me with a gratifying senior study experience. We, as seniors, set the tone for

Page 4: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter T3,Wk3 010813

the rest of the college. And whilst we do have our awesome privileges, such as the shaded amphitheatre, senior library lunches, the hub, study centre and the senior café and seating areas, the bridge and relationship really is evident from junior and senior years as seen in combined assemblies, masse, open and creative nights, mess days and sporting carnivals; which I feel is both spiritually refreshing, important and gratifying. As mentioned, I am a creative and performing arts (or CAPA) student, and so I can brag on how fortunate, fantastic, and state-of-the-art our facilities are here at 1 College Drive, in the form of the centres, equipment and teachers. With our up and coming display nights and practical HSC trails exams, we are all putting the hours in, both during and after school times to polish and perfect are performances. So too, I should mention are the many cultural teams, such as debating, public speaking and even chess teams and sporting teams and sporting opportunities provided around the college, which are catered for and coached by the staff here at school. They are a motivator and balance opportunity away from the books and academic pens and pencils and so are embraced, especially during the last two years. One I should mention is the Wednesday morning speciality- the senior Boot-camp, which is a rewarding struggle our awesome senior year coordinators, Mrs Flanagan and Mr Smith “encourage” us to sweat it out in, stimulating our potential both on the sporting field and in the classroom: inevitably assisting us in all facets of college life. The Regional executive team, ie Mr Dempsey and Mrs Eichmann do tremendous job, as does the rest of the staff here at the college, and for those transitioning from year 10 here at Regional the familiarity assists in many ways. But what the executives also do, is provided us, seniors, with recommendations and references, for our various applications and motivate us with their faith in us, to achieve our own personal best for ourselves and for the college. And this is evident as we commence HSC trail exams and lead into our post-trial revision and seminar period. As a senior student you come to develop a deep sense of loyalty to the college and those around you. As Andrew mentioned, we are all called to a greater sense of leadership in the final years here. We were lucky enough to be elected from peers and teachers as the college captains, and you may be called upon to do the same, and take up a formal leadership position. Either in the SRC, Community Service groups or House Prefects and it may be something you would want to think about, leading into your final years, because as scary at it seems, reality is, that this is you in two years’ time: Adults and p-plate drivers, being less than 100 days off finishing secondary school and life here at the College. The final stretch, the hard yards, gardening analogies aside, you are almost done, and it’s time you pull together and make the experience worthwhile. Channelling Mr Dempsey’s words, I would like to reiterate Co-captain Newbound in saying that as a senior here at the college, I am proud to say that it is a privilege to be school captain and to be a part of the overall experience here at the College where the rewards are high and we are united: on the field, in the classroom, in experiences. And we take with us, skills, knowledge, initiative, leadership and friendships that will pervade our futures, wherever they may lead us.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey Principal

SCHOOL FEES Many thanks to all of those families who have paid their school fees and to those who are committed to the ongoing payment of fees. To operate our schools efficiently and with the best possible facilities, school fees are the most critical component of the means of resourcing our schools. Currently there is a substantial shortfall in the budgeted school fee collection rate which means there is financial pressure on the operating budgets of individual schools. Any payment of outstanding fees would therefore be most appreciated. Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) include:

If I am having difficulty keeping up with paying fees, what can I do? We are really keen to assist anyone who is experiencing difficulty with paying fees. All family circumstances are different and we would like to hear from people so that we can provide financial assistance during difficult times. All school fee issues are kept completely confidential. Please phone Trudi Hosking at Parish Administration – 6588 7444 Can I adjust my Direct Debit amount? Definitely. We’re only too happy to discuss this with parents and negotiate an appropriate plan for individual families. What is the Fee Assistance Program? The Fee Assistance Program is designed specifically for people experiencing financial hardship or other special circumstances, short term or long term. Please phone Trudi Hosking for further information. The established partnership of schools working with parents to provide the best possible education for their children is commendable. Thank you again for your ongoing support. John McQueen Parish Director Education

WALKATHON 2013

This major fundraising event allows students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and have this week been given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Cath Eichmann at the College.

Thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to seek sponsorship, in addition to completing the healthy 10km walk, as it provides opportunity to purchase items which could not otherwise be purchased for students.

YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION

Last Friday all Year 8 Geography students had the opportunity to partake in Fieldwork as a part of an excursion that was organised by Mr Shelley in the local area. During the excursion students visited local businesses and listened to how they operated and marketed themselves. They also undertook activities involving essential Geography skills.

The sites visited included Cassegrain’s Tree Plantation, Ricardoe’s Tomatoes, FUN Organics and the local State forest near Telegraph Point where they listened to members from the new Forestry Corporation who manage more than two million hectares of forests for the economic, environmental and social benefit of the people of NSW. Many of the sites were hands on so students were able to pick up chickens, pat Alpacas and touch and hold forestry equipment and samples as well as take home sample of products.

During the visits students were asked to complete a Fieldwork booklet and record fieldwork activities. This booklet was handed up at the end of the day and will be used as a record of fieldwork activities for our Semester 2 Report.

I would like to thanks all Year 8 for their behaviour on the day and the respect shown to the presenters. I would also like to thank HSIE staff who attended including Mr Jennings, Mrs Gerke, Mr West, Mr Buckley, Miss Chaloner, Mr Garguilio, Mr Berry, Mrs Worthing and our two Practicum teachers Josh and Amanda . A special thanks also goes to Mr Shelley who was instrumental in making this day possible.

menALIVE

menALIVE is a National Catholic Ministry to Men which was founded out of a response to a great need in the hearts and lives of men, and a great need in the life of the Catholic Church. The purpose of menAlive is to bring men together, to renew their faith in God and to encourage them become an active force of renewal in the Church.

On the 27th and 28th July 2013 a menAlive weekend was held at St Joseph’s Regional College, Port Macquarie. Men of all ages from the Port Macquarie parish and surrounding parishes were invited to attend this event, which was delivered by an experienced menAlive team from Brisbane.

The weekend was a huge success with 45 men attending. The weekend provided an opportunity for men to connect with other men, to share personally about their lives and reflect where they are at the moment on their faith journey. The menAlive team were able to encourage and guide each man about this connection with other men, emphasizing God as an important part of that connection. They provided useful tools and practical ideas for each man to use when leaving the weekend.

Many thanks to the menAlive team, the local men who helped organise this event Patrick Cooper, Anthony Cummins, Jason DeSilva and Michael Morson . Also special thanks to our clergy who attended, Fr James Foster, Fr Amilla and Bishop Sattlewaite . Finally thank you to Jim Dempsey and Anne O’Brien for permission to use our College as the venue.

‘LUMINOSITY’

From Wednesday, 24th July to Friday, 26th July, St Joseph’s Regional College had 13 students, 9 trainees and two teaching staff attend the Luminosity National Youth Summit. The three day conference aimed to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to ‘just do it’.

This year’s theme ’Dangerous Ideas’ challenged attendees to not only think big and outside the box but to also seize the opportunities around them and take calculated risks to achieve success. Participants listened to a range of motivational and inspirational speakers including Dan Flynn, Michael Crosslands, Faustina ‘Fuzzy’ Agolley, Riley Batt and Andrew Morello, as well as partaking in workshops and master classes.

Quotes from the day: • "I like how it's opened up my mind to all the new and creative ideas and opportunities that I

thought were too far out of my reach." • "It showed me that success usually comes with a lot of failure." • "Never give excuses for why you cannot commit to certain tasks or jobs because they are

holding you back from your achievements." • "Be inspired by different people to follow your passion and make a difference." • "I like that I made friends and I’m learning to start now, as tomorrow never comes." • "Fight for what you want in life - live the dream."

Feedback from Luminosity:

• Our time at the Luminosity Youth Summit was the best, most inspiring three days ever. We left so motivated to change the world, there is no way we can know of these injustices and not do something about it. Tahnee Borg, Year 11

• Luminosity was an enlightening experience and was certainly a motivating time for all who attended. I walk away from these three days with a much more opened mind, knowing I am able to reach my full potential. Anything is now possible. Sam Turner, Year 11

• Luminosity Youth Summit was definitely a forum which has inspired many of those who attended allowed them to set their own challenges and has prompted them to excel in their own ways in order to achieve their ‘Dangerous Ideas’. As Dan Flynn (The Co-Founder of Thank you Water) said, “Impossibility is an Opinion, Not a Fact”. Wunambi Connor, SJRC Trainee 2013

MANAGING SAFE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AT HOME

It is recommended that parents exercise a degree of control over their children’s use of technology at home. Just as you set limits and expect certain standards of behaviour from your children in other aspects of their social development, the same should apply to their use of computers and other personal devices.

Over the next few weeks we will offer tips and links to resources we think may be useful to ensure safe use of technology at home.

TIP: Consider old fashion board games and jigsaw puzzle s for family fun. They are just as engaging, more social and quite retro!

For more tips and video links on managing safe use of technology at home, visit our iPad website from the Quick Links tab on the school website or copy and paste the following URL in your browser http://go2school.wix.com/ipad#!management/cfqh

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation and divorce

Parent Invitation

Parent Assembly is delighted be offering a new prog ram for parents this term. In partnership with Good Grief and the Diocese Of Lismore. We are proud to be part of a pilot of the brand new program, Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce.

Seasons for Growth for Parents has been developed to meet this need. The program provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the experience of separation and divorce from your child’s perspective, and to explore ideas and strategies that might help you support your child/ren through the changes happening in your family.

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce is a small group program for 5-10 parents. It will be held over 2 x 2 hour sessions and is for parents only.

14s Harry Wells Cup

The 14s had four games. We started off slowly with some close losses. By the afternoon the team had gelled and we beat St Paul's convincingly.

The boys played tougher and defended strongly limiting St Paul's go forward. Our attack was well structured and incisive. All of the boys played strongly with special mention going to Jacob Marshall, Fynn Marshall, Jackson Partridge, Aiden Fox, Brayden Stubbs and Will Pritchard.

Under 14 & 16 Rugby Union Last week was busy for the Under 14s and 16s rugby union sides with two major events on the season calendar falling in the same week. Tuesday saw the teams travel to Coffs Harbour to compete in the Coast to Country Cup. The Under 16’s started their first game strongly against John Paul College, but were unable to contain the opposition backs in the latter part of the match and unfortunately went down in a close game. The Under 16s second game was against the ‘old foes’ of St Paul’s, with Regional going into the game as underdogs against a powerful St Paul’s side. The Regional pack dominated early securing a 10-0 lead, however, a late comeback from St Paul’s and a try in the last seconds of the game saw St Paul’s come out on top 12-10. In their third game the 16s lost to Manning Valley Barbarians and in their final match of the day Regional was able to secure a win against Kempsey. Zac Parnell was a stand out all day and was well-supported by Kye Marshall. The 14s started the day positively with a win against Macksville High but were unable to follow this up in their second game, losing to a dominant John Paul College side. Despite the loss the 14s still had an opportunity to progress through to the next level as long as they beat Kempsey High School in the semi-final. The St Joseph’s Regional College 14s side seemed to have the upper hand throughout the match but an 80m runaway try by the Kempsey full-back in the dying seconds allowed Kempsey to secure the win. Fynn Marshall and Will Pritchard showed their class in the Under 14 age group, performing strongly throughout the day. Two days later both teams were at it again, this time hosting our annual fixture against Bishop Druitt College. Both teams were playing for the Coastal Shield, the Under 14’s were looking to retain the shield that they won last year and the Under 16s hoping to regain the shield from Bishop Druitt. The cheer squad got the crowd revved with some pre-match entertainment and then cheered the Under 14 Regional side on to the field. The motivation obviously worked as the Regional side set about demolishing the Bishop Druitt team 60-5 in a one-sided affair. Once again Fynn Marshall and Will Pritchard showed their class and were supported by Ben Shirt who had a strong game in the tight and Aidan Fox who enjoyed the open style footy. The 16s match proved to be a tighter match with both sides scoring freely at each end. In a high scoring game, the Regional 16’s ended up eventual winners 45-36. Kyle Blanch’s goal kicking deserves a mention as his conversions proved to be the difference between the two sides. Zac Parnell and Kye Marshall worked well together again and Jarrod Stewart played well out of position. Thank you to both teams for helping set up the fields and pack up at the end of the day. Thank you for also providing food for the after match functions. Nathan Gargiulo, John Rossington Coaches

Northern Region Junior Basketball Finals

Congratulations to the large number of students who contested the Northern Region Basketball Finals over the weekend. The northern region covers a large area from Tweed Heads to Tamworth and Armidale and down to Port Macquarie.

In particular we would like to recognise Laura McMahon and Shannon Murray who were members of the victorious under eighteen girls team to top off an undefeated season. They now travel to the state titles as the only Port Macquarie team left standing. Good luck girls.
