COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
FAREWELL MESSAGE The Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1-11) reminds us that there is “a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die… A time to weep, a time to laugh, a time to mourn, a time to dance… A time to be silent, a time to speak…” For me it is time to retire from full-time work. I have mixed feelings as the time approaches because of my love for catholic education, the students and families we serve and the many friends and colleagues with whom I have worked in Port Macquarie for the past 40 years. Not having the opportunity to engage with all these people on a daily basis will be quite an adjustment. For 29 of these years I had the privilege of leading Catholic Secondary Education in St Agnes‟ Parish. In 1975 when I started teaching at St Joseph‟s Regional, the school had an enrolment of 180 students in Years 7-10. Today we have within St Agnes‟ Parish, Port Macquarie, one of the best resourced and performing secondary school complexes in Australia catering for over 2,400 students. As I sign off for the last time, there are many wonderful people I would like to be able to thank. It is not possible to mention most people by name. I am hoping to see many before the year‟s end. I am indebted to the following:
Father Donnelly for his unwavering loyalty and support over the past 40 years;
to our current Chaplain, Father James Foster, who has taken on his role with passion and commitment;
to all the priests who have served as chaplains over the past 40 years. They have been friends and mentors as well as school chaplains;
to my first bosses, Sister Virginia Bourke and Sister Marie Boland, and all the Sisters of St Joseph who served us in those early challenging years. They are wonderful women who have left a great legacy in our schools and parish;
to each of the Principals, Campus Principals and Campus Assistant Principals with whom I have worked in a leadership role over the past 29 years. They were more than just colleagues. They were friends with whom I enjoyed spending time;
to John McQueen who has been the Parish Education Director for many years. I have worked closely with John in this capacity and count him as one of the best friends I have ever had;
to my principal colleagues in other parish primary schools and to all my secondary colleagues in the Lismore Diocese. I have truly appreciated their friendship and support. I would single out Pat McLoughlin for special mention. For around 25 years we have met three mornings each week at 5.30am for exercise which also involves some mentoring, coaching and even counselling on occasions;
to David Condon and the staff of the Catholic Schools‟ Office for their leadership and support over the years. We are fortunate to have so many consultants, advisers and staff who have helped make the task of leading a large school complex more manageable;
to the wonderful secretarial staff in each of our parish secondary schools. I have never had a personal assistant. I have had a whole team of secretaries who have assisted me in so many ways over the years. I truly appreciate their support and assistance as well as their friendship;
to all the leaders and teachers within SAPSS. We are truly blessed to have so many extremely dedicated, professional, committed staff who do an amazing job day after day;
to our ex-students who continue to be a source of pride as they achieve great success in careers beyond school;
to the current students who readily embrace the values and belief of our catholic system. Don‟t let anyone tell you that the children of today are more difficult or less capable than past students. Our current students continue to inspire me with their talent, achievements and friendly manner;
to parents who have given me so much support over the years. I thank especially those who have served on the Advisory Board, now called the Parent Consultative Committee. I can count on one hand the number of „difficult parents‟, but have lost count of the number who have given me support and friendship;
to so many people and businesses within the broader Port Macquarie Hastings and Camden Haven communities who have also given myself and SAPSS generous support;
to the parishioners of the St Agnes‟ Parish, their support for catholic education has helped us build world class schools. The Finance Committee, the Pastoral Council and Education Council have played a particularly important part in helping us achieve such successful outcomes; and
finally, to my own family. The Book of Proverbs tells us that „A good wife is like a crown for her husband‟ (Proverbs 12:4). I have been blessed with „a crown‟. Mary has been a wonderful support and an asset to me throughout my career. We have a daughter, Allison, who completed all her schooling in St Agnes‟ Parish Schools and made me a very proud father. She moved back to Port Macquarie after 12 years working and studying away, and married Cameron Ritchie two years ago. We are now the very proud grandparents of Dominic James. Spending time with him is part of my retirement plan!
I retire from a leadership role feeling supremely confident that others will further improve the culture and performance of our parish secondary schools. As I have stated many times, „not to go forward is to go backwards‟. There has to be continuous improvement in standards, in collaboration, in teaching and learning, in pastoral care, in spiritual and faith formation and in opportunities for all students to grow and develop. These have been a constant focus for SAPSS. I am looking forward to a great celebration on Saturday evening at Panthers. I was reluctant to have a retirement dinner, but others took that decision out of my hands. My special thanks to John McQueen and the committee, including Cath Eichmann, Helen Gilbert and Wendy Welsh, who took on the work of organising the function. Finally, may each of you be richly blessed in your personal life, in your family life and in the supremely important work you do as parents and educators. Love, gratitude and best wishes to all for Christmas and the future.
Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our special guests and to our parents who are with us for the last time today; particularly those who will see their sons and daughters embark on a new educational journey at Newman Senior Technical College in 2015. Thank you for your loyalty and support for our wonderful College. I would like to pay a special tribute to Mr Jim O’Brien: Jim this is your last formal engagement at the College and while we will sincerely miss you next year, we know that you will be very close by supporting us in spirit. On behalf of the St Joseph‟s Regional College community I would like to congratulate the wonderful contributions our students have made this year. I would particularly like to acknowledge our 2014 SRC Representatives: Year 8: Lily Smith, Cooper Lewis-Bain, Year 9: Tilley Meddemmen, Matthew Cramp, and Year 10: Mary Shelley and Jarrod Stewart. Also to all of our PC Community Representatives: I can only say that you have done an exceptional job, and you should be justifiably proud of your efforts. Thank you to Mr Daniel O’Mullane and Mr Sean Jennings for the fine role models you have been for our students on the SRC. I would like to extend a special thank you to key staff members who have been instrumental in your achievements at the College this year. To our House Coordinators: Flinders: Mr Adrian Ryan; Oxley: Mr Frank Johnston; Macquarie: Mrs Tanya Daley (and Ms Sonia West) and Innes: Mr Richard Battiston, your pastoral care of our students is „second to none‟ – thank you for all the work you do in your leadership and behind the scenes to supporting students in your respective houses. To our Pastoral Teachers, thank you for engendering a real sense spirit in your house groups. Your work goes „over and above‟ a teachers‟ normal call of duty. To Assistant Principal, Mrs Eichmann, Leader of Evangelisation and Catechesis; Ms Nora Swain, Leader of Curriculum, Mr Lutton, Leader of Administration, Mr Kalchbauer and Leader of Pedagogy, Mr Delaney - your work on the Leadership Team in combination is quite simply outstanding. To our KLA Leaders and Cooordinators: Ms Reiger, Mr Toohey, Mr Bennie, Mr Warneken, Mrs Stace, Mr Kelly, Mr Pares, Mrs Gilbert, Mr Cannon, and Mrs Handley and all course teachers; Teachers Assistants and Support Staff – your dedication to our students learning and overall progress is appreciated by all. It takes a whole village to raise a young adult. At our Christmas Mass this week, Fr James spoke to you about the importance of being joyful and making celebrating gifts a priority in our lives as we approach the birth of Christ. For this a constant sign in our lives that Jesus walks with us in everything we do. Today it is fitting for us to bear witness and affirm your many outstanding academic achievements for 2014. Indeed, it is an important signpost in your time here at St Joseph‟s Regional College: a day where you recognise your personal gifts and give thanks for your loving teachers and your parents who make many sacrifices to send you to such a great Catholic school. On behalf of the College community I once again thank you for being part of our family and extend my warm congratulations to our award winners at this ceremony and our House ceremonies to follow. I wish you all a very safe, holy and joyful Christmas season.
This year St Joseph‟s Regional College unfortunately says farewell to three long-term staff members: Leader of Pedagogy, Mr Chris Delaney; Mrs Nicole Prior and Mr Daniel O’Mullane. Colleagues have written testimonials affirming each of their great contribution to St Joseph‟s Regional College over the years. Chris Delaney came to SJRC from MacKillop in 2010 to fulfil the role of PDHPE Coordinator. During his three years in the role Chris demonstrated outstanding leadership, organisational and administrative skills. He quickly became a highly respected member of the SJRC staff and his peers identified his quality teaching skills, initiative and passion for teaching. In 2013 Chris was appointed as the SJRC Leader of Pedagogy and it was in this role that he was soon recognised by both the College and the Diocese as an exceptional leader of 21st Century Learning. Students have held Chris in the highest esteem and were forever grateful for his contribution to their learning as well as his genuine concern for their personal and spiritual growth. Chris has played a significant role in mentoring students into young adulthood. (Cath Eichmann, Assistant Principal) Nicole Prior was a welcomed member of our staff in 2012. She has been a dynamic and innovative teacher and a leader in technology in the Religious Education and HSIE faculties. She has engaged in further study in the Masters of Theology to become a specialist teacher in the Religious Education area. Nicole has demonstrated her leadership abilities in assuming a role as Pastoral Co-ordinator while others were on leave. Her students describe her as energetic, enthusiastic and dynamic. She has truly enriched the spiritual development of the students by bringing alive the curriculum and offering the students the opportunity to live out their discipleship and witness in the community. She has co-ordinated an initiative in peer ministry by having students run liturgies and activities in the primary schools. Nicole will be a wonder addition to another one of our St Agnes‟ Parish Secondary Schools, Newman Technical College, but will be truly missed as a valued member of our college community. (Ms Nora Swain, Leader of Evangelisation and Catechesis) Daniel O’Mullane has been an integral part of the Science Faculty since his arrival after completing his studies at the University of Newcastle with outstanding results in his teaching degree. He has shown a high level of professionalism with well-planned and engaging lessons. This has been demonstrated by Daniel instigating astronomy nights, Year 8 student‟s peer teaching primary students at St. Joseph‟s Primary Wauchope and posters of science facts in the windows of our science laboratories. In addition, Daniel has played a key role in fostering student leadership at St Joseph‟s Regional College through his role as Coordinator of the Student Representative Council. Daniel‟s thoughtful, caring and professional approach since his start with us at the Regional College in 2011 has been highly regarded and he will be sorely missed. (Mr Damian Bennie, Leader of Science) We also congratulate Our College Leader of Administration, Mr Chris Kalchbauer who will take up a secondment as a Secondary Teacher Educator (Catechesis and Evangelisation) and Mr Ian Lutton, Leader of Curriculum, on his appointment to Teacher Educator South for the Lismore Catholic Education Office in 2015. In addition, Ms Jessica Wright will be taking a year‟s leave to immerse herself in French and Parisian culture next year. We wish both Chris and Jessica well, and look forward to their returning in 2016.

UNIFORM 2014 REMINDERS
As many students have outgrown their uniforms in 2014, I thought it an apt time to remind parents and students that our uniform requirements are clearly outlined on our College website.
To avoid issues when school resumes in 2015 please note the following reminders:
School Shoes - Many parents will need to purchase new school shoes for their sons and daughters in January 2015. Please remember that the school requires these to be plain black, polishable lace-up ALL leather shoes. (No high tops, boots or ripple soles, skate type shoes or logos. No buckle shoes or open top shoes. Heels should not be more than 2.5cm.) Sport shoes must be proper sports shoes. School shoes are not to be worn as part of the sports uniform.
Please note images of a selection of correct and incorrect shoes can be found on the College website under „Quick Links”. Please be aware Nike and Converse school shoes are not permitted as they have rubber toes and ARE NOT all leather.
Girls Skirts- Skirts MUST be KNEE-LENGTH.
Piercing and Hair Styles and Colour- Some students choose to have piercings and variation to hair colour and styles in the holidays. A reminder that these must comply with school rules when students return in 2015. Please note: Band-Aids are not permitted to be worn to cover new piercings.
