As we move into the future, the tools and instructional methods to achieve these goals are advancing dramatically. Technolo- gies such as computers, smartboards, tablets, wide-area networks and the internet allow access to a variety of learning opportunities not traditionally available. Over the past few months the School in conjunction with the Toowoomba Catholic Education Office and the School Board have been looking for ways in which we can provide our students with access to the latest technological advancements now and into the future. In order to cater for this need, it has become necessary for our school to increase our Information and Communi- cation Technology and Building Levies that we charge as part of the school fees for 2013. All other fees and levies will only increase inline with CPI figures. While ever mindful of the costs to parents in all areas of raising a family, a good education must be a high priority. At St Joseph’s we strive to provide a quality, faith and values based education that prepares your child in the best possible way for his or her future. We would love to be able to do this without having to increase any fees or costs but unfortunately that is not possible. I regret that sending your child to St Joseph’s in 2013 will be more expensive, but I give you my word that, despite what is actually a very lean schedule we will do our utmost to ensure that St Joseph’s continues to provide excellence in education. I appreciate the great support that fami- lies give to this school and trust that you will continue to do so. 2013 School Fees (per term) 2013 Levies Further information regarding school fees for 2013 including payment options will be sent home in the coming weeks. An Ode to Grandparents Grandparents touch a special place

Where fondness remains true

Filling our precious lives with grace

To last a lifetime through

Their strong hands are soft and tender

Nurturing is their creed

And their hearts are meant to render

More love than one could need.

Grandparents take the time to hear

The dreams their loved ones share

They laugh and sometimes, wipe a tear

To show how much they care

Their empathy is made to last

Under God’s sacred plan

No length could be too small or vast

For their kindness to span.

Grandparents form a special bond

No one can ever break

Their adoration lasts beyond

The earthen steps we take

A breath of hope; a staunch ally

Indeed, our lives are blessed

There is no way one could deny

Grandparents are the best!

Each of the classes are contributing towards making the morning

great for our Grandparents and visitors:

Prep – are making the centre pieces for the tables

Year 1 – are creating artworks for display

Year 2 – are creating a PowerPoint to present

Year 3 – are creating Acrostic poems to share

Year 4 – will present their eisteddfod poem ‘Granny and the

snake’

Year 5 – created posters to advertise the event

Year 6/7 – will perform ‘Hush, hear the angels sing’, the song

they recorded for the Diocesan CD, ‘Beyond the Stars’

Year 6/7 – will meet and greet visitors at the school gates as they

enter the school at 11.00

Mini Vinnies – will be helping in the kitchen and with serving

morning tea

Adidas School Fun Run

The St Joseph’s P&F will be holding a School

Fun-Run as a fundraising event this term. The

event will be held on the 9th of November in the

school grounds.

The adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser

that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting

active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main

focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appre-

ciated as we encourage all students to get involved.

All students have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect spon-

sorship on behalf of the school. The funds raised will go to support-

ing your child’s education through the purchase of equipment and

classroom resources.

We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front

page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate

in this event. All students will receive a reward for their efforts. In

the Sponsorship Form you will also find many other benefits like the

chance to win a family holiday to Disneyland!

Finally, we would like to welcome parents and family members to

attend the event day at the school to help cheer on the students.

Further details will be sent home in next week’s newsletter.

Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!

STATE TRACK & FIELD

Congratulations to Thomas Bannister, Shannon Bender and David Phelps for some outstanding results in their recent participation in the State Track and Field Championships. All three students com-peted admirably against our States top athletes and recorded Personal Best times and distances in their respective events. Well done Thomas, Shannon and David!!

STATE CRICKET

Thomas Bannister and his family will travel to their last event in their sporting calendar for 2012. Thomas is a member of the South West Cricket team who will compete in Bundaberg from Sunday 4th November to Thursday 8th November. We wish Thomas all the very best in his final State Championship.

SWIMMING

Although the weather hasn't been all too kind to us over the last three weeks, it has been very fortunate that we have had the use of the indoor pool, particularly for our younger students. This has been of great benefit to the students who continue to show excel-lent progress in their water confidence and stroke development. It is also fantastic to see the improvement and dedication in our old-er students who continue to develop their fitness in readiness for their Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 28th November. Over the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on the students strengths in order to nominate them in their individual events for the Swim-ming Carnival.

Mission Cup On the 27th and 28th of October all

the year

seven girls, Danielle Olsen, Arlie and

Jane

Sommerfeld and parents braved the

many climate changes of Toowoomba

for a weekend of netball, competing

for the Mission Cup. This was played

at the Nell E Robinson park. Although we didn’t come home with a

trophy, a great time was had by all.

Instrumental Music

On the 24th of October a selection of our Instrumental Music stu-

dents travelled to Toowoomba to take part in the Intermediate

Music Camp. Students from more than thirty schools took part in

the camp which was comprised of three days of intensive musical

rehearsals and workshopping which culminated in an evening

concert on the final day of the camp.

Students met many different instru-

mental music students from through-

out the region and were able to work

with conductors from different

schools. The students should be com-

mended on their excellent behaviour

and hard work over the three days,

and for their exceptional performances in the final concert. Well

done students.

Curriculum Corner - Prep

We have had a wonderful start to the Term in Prep with all students working extremely well. Even though we are only three weeks into to Term, students have taken on many new and exciting challenges in prepara-tion for their big move to Year One next year! Some of these changes have included the introduction of our Maths and Literacy Homework packs, weekly Home Reading Packs, Handwriting books and our newly struc-tured Reading Groups. Students have also enjoyed participating in weekly swimming lessons and their new Drama sessions with Mrs Wells. We are all excited to see what they are all busily preparing to present at the end of Term! In Maths this Term students have been working on number boards with numbers up to 25. Students have been required to recognise each number and place them in order on our number mat. The children must use strategies other than counting from one to establish which number goes where. Students have been working with many different representations of numbers to 25 including digits, words and ten’s frames to complete this task. We have also be working with and using number ladders. Students have been given a collection of 10 consecutive numbers with a starting point of either 0 or 11. Students are then required to position their collection of numbers in the correct spaces on the ladder when the numbers are drawn at random. As well as these topics, students will cover sharing, addition and subtraction stories, patterning, calendars and grids. We have also begun working with weekly Maths Rotations. These rotations have been very successful and students have seemed to enjoy each activity. We have also been integrating the use of our computers, the electronic whiteboard and iPads into these sessions. Students have also begun a new Science until this term called “What’s it made of?” In Week One students participated in a mapping exercise where they were required to make a map of our school grounds with different reference points throughout it. Students then labelled their map and reflected on what they had completed. Mrs Merritt and I were extremely impressed with the quality of the maps that were produced and the amount of focused work the students participated in during this session. As the unit progresses we will focus on the properties of different materials in our environment. In English this Term we have begun the study of the novel James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. We have had focused reading sessions each afternoon after our jobs have been completed. The students have been doing a wonderful job reflecting on and comprehending the story while we have been reading it. We have also begun working in our red and blue lined writing books. Students have been extremely excited to be us-ing these books and have been working well completing their daily assigned tasks. During Religion we have enjoyed discussing the Mission Week celebrations which we have taken part in. The Prep students worked extremely hard with our coin trail and ended up winning with the longest line at over 21 meters! As October is the month of Mary we have been focusing on learning the Hail Mary as well as learning about Jesus and His family. This Term we have also been discussing different stories within the Bible beginning with the story of Noah’s Ark. Over the past two weeks, students have spent time role-playing and exploring the story further. We were very happy to present our re-enactment of Noah’s Ark on Assembly last

Friday! Miss Katie Hede

St Joseph’s Primary School 5 Week 4

Curriculum Corner - Year 1 Greetings from Year One! Term 4 is off to a great start and we have been working busily to en-sure that we get everything done before the end of the year.

In English this term, we are focusing on Poetry. The majority of attention will be paid to Limer-icks where we will read, write and present this poetry style. We will also continue to work on our sight words, handwriting, letter blends, word families and other literacy skills.

Mathematics this term will see us once again working through all of the different strands from working with a 100s board to looking at both digital and analogue time. We will continue to use our addition and subtraction strategies and will revise our knowledge of Australian coins. We will carry on working on our skip counting skills, look at fractions, and give directions to familiar places.

In Religion, we have spent time discovering what Baptism is, the special symbols that are used, and have gained an understanding of why it is an important Sacrament. This week, we will be moving on to look at our own spirituality and will experience some of the different types of pray-er. We will conclude our religious studies this year by discussing, plan-ning, designing and partaking in a liturgy celebration. Make sure you keep an eye out for more details closer to the end of the year.

Science this term has got us observing change through the context of food. We have been identifying how heating or cooling a food can change its properties and predicting whether that change can be reversed. So far, we have had lots of fun investigating the effects of heat on an ice-block as well as how the properties of spaghetti change when it is cooked.

Our Integrated Unit sees us looking at the different ways that we can help look after our environment, both at home and at school. We have been investi-gating how we can save water and will move on to look at saving energy and recycling in the weeks to come.

It’s hard to believe that we are in the final term of the year. We are focusing on enjoying and making the most of our last weeks together before the end of the school year. Miss Rebekah Bowdler

Curriculum Corner - Year 2

We are so proud of how far the children have progressed this year and are blown away by the enthusiasm and responsibility they are showing within all curriculum areas. This Term we are focusing on the following units:

Math – Trading/regrouping when adding double digit numbers using tactile materials and recording. We shall move in to hundreds with trading with those children who are excelling in this area. Money and measurement will be focused on during Mission Week. Measurement using centimetres and metres will be the focus for the Marble Ramp Investigation in Week 4 and measurement using litres will be focused on during the Water Wise Investiga-tion (linked with SOSE learning also). We shall also revisit multiplication and explore its link to division operations. Math Kits are going home on a daily roster with all children to share with their families.

English – Persuasive text is the genre focus this term and the children have begun with a squish or not to squish scenario. Our first foray into this genre has been fantastic, with the children producing great arguments for both sides of the fence! Their final drafts are displayed in the room, so if you are able, please take the time to check them out. We shall continue consolidating grammar and punctuation knowledge and application as well as intro-ducing homophones, adverbs, contractions and prefixes.

Religion – This Term we are focusing on stories from Scripture. We have begun with Noah’s Ark and Gods covenant with Noah. The children will be investigating stories from both the Old and New Testaments this Term, finishing with the Birth of Jesus.

Science – Water Works is the title of this Terms unit and this is linked closely to the SOSE unit we shall be investi-gating also.

SOSE – ‘Water Wise’ is our theme this Term and the children will learn about the water cycle, uses for water and water conservation in their homes and at school. This unit will culminate in the children producing a poster which encourages water conservation practices in either the home or school settings.

We welcomed Mr. Deon Cross into our classroom during the first week of school and were entertained with a stirring rendi-tion of “The Man from Snowy River” and one of Mr. Cross’ original poems about his ‘working’ dog. The kids returned the fa-vour by reciting “In the Dark” for Deon, their prize winning poem at this year’s Dalby Eisteddfod. This activity was a follow up to last terms poetry unit before digging into this terms persuasive text focus. We thank Mr. Cross very much for being so gen-erous and sharing his time and talent with our students.

Year 3 Curriculum Corner The final term of the year is proving to be a busy but exciting term for year 3

students. Students have been discovering various types of poetry within our

English unit. We have written wonderful acrostic poems about our school and

we are busily writing many more types of poetry. We have begun investigat-

ing heat in our science unit. We have looked at sources of heat, how heat is

made and will continue to explore ways heat can travel. Our religious focus

this term is Reconciliation. Students have had the opportunity to discover the

process to peaceful reconciliation and have discussed ways in which they can

apply this in their lives. Mathematics this term has students recalling various

concepts learnt throughout the year to solve problems using efficient strate-

gies for multiplication, addition and subtraction, represent money values in

various ways, correctly count out change from financial transactions, use

metric units for length, mass and capacity and match positions on maps with

given information. We'll identify, compare and describe angles and investigate

lines of symmetry. Year 3 are also learning various art skills with Mrs Mac-

lean and are producing some amazing art work!! It has been great to see the

wonderful progress made by Year 3 this year! I know they are excited and

ready to make the big jump to Year 4 in the upper school next year!!
