Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, We have so much reason to rejoice! We continue to return to some kind of “normalcy.” The journey in this direction has been going on for a while, of course. But here are some beautiful new developments: Sunday night Youth Group returned! 25 or so youth

attended. We opened the Word, talked about our blessings and struggles from COVID, and played kickball. Well, I watched and they played.

St. Joe School reopened to in-person instruction! Praise the Lord. It’s about time. Kids NEED to be with each other for their health.

We had our first “eating event” in the cafeteria since COVID started. It was Tyler’s goodbye party and the church’s 112th anniversary party. So many came and it was wonderful.

I’m sure there are other things, too.

After Masses last weekend, I just sat with Our Lord and thought, “My heart is so full.” I just love this place. I love the church. I love the people. I loved our time with Seminarian Tyler. I love the faith. I love that God is so good to us.

Let us keep our students and teachers in prayer as they return to school. Mrs. Borland and I went through the school and blessed the whole school, each room. God has us in His care.

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

Statement from the Batesville Deanery Regarding the Governor’s Executive Order

As you know, Governor Eric Holcomb issued an Executive Order on July 24, 2020, which requires the use of face coverings for everyone over the age of 7 in places open to the public. Since our parishes are open to the public and since social distancing cannot be completely observed inside, the priests and PLCs of the Batesville Deanery believe that the unified use of face coverings in our churches and other parish buildings is in the best interest of all. Effective July 27th, everyone entering a church, adoration chapel, school build-ing, parish office, or other parish building in the Batesville Deanery should wear a face covering of some kind until the Governor changes the expected practice. Those who have medical concerns should speak with their pastor or PLC. We appreciate every-one’s assistance in following the guidelines of the Archbishop and the Governor.

The St. Vincent and St. Joseph Joint Parish Picnic Committee is planning to proceed with the Annual Joint Parish Picnic on Wednesday, August 19th at 6:00pm at the Blue River Park Shelter, with some modifications to help protect from COVID-19.

Instead of having a buffet style gathering, we are proposing an old fashion picnic basket event. Bring your family and food prepared for your family only. We will have tables set up in the Blue River Shelter, appropriately distanced and there is plenty of space on the grassy area to have a blanket, if you choose.

It is recommended to wear a mask at the event when socializing with others. Parishioners will be encour-aged not to share food with non-household family members and to be diligent about using hand sanitiz-er before and after eating. Drinks will be provided. Contact: Jennifer at [email protected] or Della at [email protected].

St. Joe School Aftercare runs from 3:00pm until 5:00pm every day. We are in need of some volun-teers to help watch the kids. If you are interested, contact Principal Beth Borland at [email protected].

REP Registration

It is time to register your son or daughter for the Religious Education Program for the 2020-2021 school year. REP will start in September 2020.

If your child is unable to attend St. Joseph School, then he or she should definitely be enrolled in REP!

REP is for all children who do not attend St. Joseph School, preschool through eighth grade.

Freshmen in high school attend Confirmation prep at a different time.

The fee to cover textbooks and other expenses is $50 for each child, regardless of program (e.g., Con-firmation, Sunday Religious Ed, RCIC, etc.) up to a maximum of $150 per family.

Please remember that it is our DUTY as Christian parents, godparents, and grandparents, to make sure that our children are being brought up in the Catholic faith! It is a sad thing to see the faith “die out” in one’s family.

Sign up now at: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

For more information, go to: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

Please contact Fr. Mike or Billy should you have any questions.

We Love You, Tyler!

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend’s Gospel is a continuation of last weekend’s. Jesus had just fed more than five thou-sand people and cured many. He dismissed the crowd and had the disciples get in a boat to go to the other side of the lake so he could finally get some time by himself to pray. I suspect that this happens to many of us. We have to take care of everyone and finally we have some quiet time to pray.

Jesus spent most of the night in prayer with his Father. Wouldn’t you like to know what they talked about together? Maybe Jesus talked about what life would be like for him now that John the Baptist would no longer be around. Maybe they talked about where his mission would go after feeding the multitude.

Maybe he prayed about how he would help the disci-ples to trust him more. What we do know is that after that time of prayer, Jesus was able to walk on water, calm the sea, and encourage Peter to walk on water with him. Jesus had a lot of trust in his Father and even more so after that night in prayer.

This week as we take time to talk with God, our Father, talk to him about all the people you are griev-ing, about how you can grow in trust of God. How does it feel to leave solid ground and walk on slushy water? Our faith and trust in God can sometimes feel like that. Ask Someone who knows what it is like for stronger faith.

Sr. Joan

Today’s Readings—August 9

First Reading — Elijah recognized God in the tiny whispering sound (1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a). Psalm — “Lord, let us see your k8indness, and grant us your salvation.” (Psalm 85) Second Reading — Paul speaks the truth in Christ (Romans 9:1-5). Gospel — Jesus walks on the sea (Matthew 14:22-33).

Did you know?

Each week, we are including a fact about slavery in the bulletin as a reminder of our fundamental duty to treat all as brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Catechism teaches that “enslavement of human beings, their being bought, sold and exchanged like merchandise, [is] in disregard for their personal digni-ty. It is a sin against the dignity of persons and their fundamental rights to reduce them by violence to their productive value…” (CCC 2414).

Social Security originally excluded domestic and agricultural workers--mostly African Americans in the South. Racist policies contributed to the decline of black farmers. By 1982, only 1.5 % of farmers were black, and the USDA's Civil Rights Office--which investigated loan program discrimination com-plaints--was closed.

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statue. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. In Case of Rain and we have to have Mass inside and only about 50 people can safely be in church, please know that you can hear and/or see Mass in the St. Vincent’s Hall and can hear Mass in your car on the radio station 105.3. Holy Communion will be distributed at these places during communion time. You may also watch Mass livestream in your home.

Religious Education at St. Vincent

Religious Education at St. Vincent will begin on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 from 6:15 until 7:30pm for 4 yr. old pre-school through 8th grade students. The fee is $50.00 per family.

Highschool Freshman will have Confirmation classes on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 – 5:30pm on the first and third Sundays of the month beginning on September 20th at St. Joseph Cafeteria. The fee is $50.00 per student. They can then join the high- school youth group for all high school students that meets on Sundays at 6:00 – 7:30 pm. There is no fee except for special events.

If you do not plan on participating in religious educa-tion in person and want to do it at home, please con-tact Sr. Joan 812-455-9348 by phone or text. There is a plan for this also. The fee for this depends on what plan you choose.

Book Box at St. Vincent

There is a new Book Box in the corner of St. Vin-cent’s parking lot by the Hall. It is for people to trade books. Bring a book, take a book. The books can be children’s book, good novels, whatever kind you want to share. There is no limit of how many you take or if you bring them back—just enjoy.

Indiana Bishops’ Announcement Regarding Sunday Mass

“While commending our pastors and parish life coor-dinators who have gone to great lengths to assure safe worship spaces in our churches, due to the increase in the COVID-19 cases in our state, the Indiana bishops have decided to extend the dispen-sation from the obligation of Sunday Mass attendance beyond August 15 until November 1, 2020, unless further developments determine otherwise.”

Confirmation Mass—Sept. 30

Mark your calendars! The youth of St. Joe who have been preparing for Confirmation will be confirmed by the Archbishop at the Cathedral in Indianapolis on September 30th at 7:00pm. More details to come.

News for Both Parishes Billy’s Bookshelf

Prayer for Beginners by Peter Kreeft.

Some of you may be fond of Peter Kreeft because he is quite well known and has written many books about the Catholic faith, Jesus, and Heaven. One book in particular was given to me in my earlier days at Marian University while I was in the San Damiano Scholars program. During my sophomore year I went through a transition in my faith life from being extremely luke-warm to a more focused and devoted member of our Church. I was beginning to give more of my time to the Campus Ministry and helping within other pro-grams and felt a sort of mountain-top high in my faith. But, as school work began to catch up and life start-ed to get busy, my spirit started fading. Yes, I was overly involved in Church, programs, retreats, etc., but I lacked a personal prayer life. My service and devotion to my Faith and Christ was all outward, it had no foundation within my heart. Maybe you all have had this feeling before or are going through this right now! Well, just as this book was given to me during this time, I want to bring it to your attention.

“Prayer for Beginners,” is a wonderful book both for those who either don’t have a personal prayer life and are wondering how to begin, all the way to those who have a very disciplined personal prayer life. This book helped me to see what prayer should really be and how to become someone who was contem-plative and wove prayer into every part of their life. I continually go back to this book when I feel a struggle within prayer, hearing God’s voice, discerning things in my life, and simply need to remember how to pray. It is simple, straight forward, and quite a small book but gives great meaning and reality to living a life as St. Paul states, “Pray without ceasing!” 1Thess. 5:17

Remember that it is a beautiful practice to pray be-fore Mass and after Mass. Offer a pious, heartfelt prayer before Mass asking Jesus to touch and trans-form your life. At the end of Mass, thanking God for the Eucharist.

Bulletin Advertisers Needed

Did you know that our St. Joseph and St. Vincent Bulle-tin is printed at no cost to our parishioners? We have recently switched printers and are printing it locally. We are looking for your help to offset the printing cost by purchasing an ad. We are happy to announce St. Jo-seph and St. Vincent Church’s offices are selling ads for the Bulletin. If we are able to secure enough advertis-ers, we will be able to provide the Bulletin and some-times, print it in color for special occasions at no cost to parishioners. If you would like to place an ad in our weekly Bulletin, there are 3 different sizes and prices for a six month ad: Small ad (business card size): $ 400.00 ($15.39 a wk) Quarter page ad: $ 750.00 ($28.85 a wk) 1/2 page ad: $1350.00 ($51.92 a wk)
