THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 30, 2016
JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Last Sunday’s Gospel gave us a tax collector’s beautiful prayer to take with us from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Today, another tax collector’s encounter with Jesus offers a comforting memory to cherish, but also a challenging mission to embrace. Zacchaeus’ short stature (see Luke 19:3) matched how contemptible, socially and spiritually, Zacchaeus’ religious acquaintances considered tax collectors to be. Jesus counters that judgment with mercy. Radical sin meets unmerited grace. God seeks and finds the lost; a sinner’s home becomes salvation’s house. The sinner “quickly” welcomes salvation “with joy” (19:6), while the righteous grumble judgmentally at God’s mercy. Mercy challenges us, too. Like Zacchaeus, we have been sought and found by Jesus, called by name to welcome Jesus into our heart’s home. Therefore, we must go forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy as “missionaries of mercy,” seeking our fellow sinners with Jesus, receiving them with joy (see 19:6) as cherished brothers and sisters, and joyfully offering our judgment-free hospitality as Jesus’ own “Welcome home!”

PASTOR’S CORNER Zacchaeus the tax collector was seeking to see who Jesus was and had to climb out on the limb of a tree to catch a glimpse. We all are seekers and our hearts are longing to have Jesus dwell with us. God always stretches out His love and mercy to reach us in the ways that we most need His presence. May we always seek to be filled with the gifts of God's mercy, compassion, forgiveness, wisdom and love so that we can extend those precious gifts to others throughout the world. We gather together to worship, be strengthened and receive in God's Word and Sacraments the ability to see the world with God's vision of love and mercy and go forth to love and serve others as Christ the Teacher and Servant has commissioned us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The recent “October count” tracking the statistics of participation at Sunday Mass calls to mind the situations of churches where it is difficult or impossible for Catholics to worship freely. This is especially striking in English Catholic history, as freedom of worship was systematically dismantled at the time of the Reformation. It seems that most English people retained deeply Catholic sympathies throughout the period of religious upheaval. Catholics who refused to participate in the public worship of the Church of England were called “recusants,” and beginning with the reign of Elizabeth I, they were subject to strict penalties. Recusant literally means “a person refusing to obey a command.” Most of those laws were in force until the early 1800s, and Catholics were not entirely emancipated from the duty of Anglican worship until 1829. Recusants paid heavy fines for not attending the state church. Holding on to Catholic faith was therefore a luxury of the very rich, who maintained private chapels, and sent their daughters and sons to English convents and monastery schools on the continent. Remarkably, the first among all British peers, the Dukes of Norfolk, the hereditary Earls Marshal of England, have never given up their Catholic faith. Many of these wealthy recusant families founded the colony of Maryland, and later many members of the old Catholic families continued on to the Kentucky frontier in search of greater religious freedom.

TEA RECENTLY HELD FOR ANN SALVA Former co-workers, St. Joe parishioners, and friends from all over stopped by to visit with Ann Salva. She’s at Anna Maria in Aurora getting rehab after a knee replacement and will move closer to family in PA soon.
The Catholic prison ministry team at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg is holding a Spiritual Weekend Retreat November 3-6 for Catholic inmates.
In addition to your prayers for their 5th successful weekend retreat, the ministry team is asking for donations of cookies. The participants love cookies—the bigger the better! This is the only time they are able to receive these special treats. If you’d like to donate cookies, simply drop them off on disposable, covered plates at the Parish Office by Wednesday, November 2. Let us rejoice in all the men and women, blest in the eyes of the Lord, who celebrate the heavenly liturgy. They stand in God's holy place and sing of the love the Father has bestowed upon them through the blood of the Lamb.

SENIOR THANKSGIVING DINNER The Mantua K of C’s 33rd Annual Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Sunday, November 20, at 1:00
p.m. at the Mantua Knights of Columbus Sentinel Party Center, 11845 St. Rt. 44. This year's theme is 1950's. The reservation line will open on Tuesday, November 1. VETERANS DAY DANCE The Mantua Restoration Society, Inc. is sponsoring a Veterans Day Dance on Saturday, November 12, 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Mantua Center School, 11471 Mantua Center Rd. This is a tribute to all veterans with a special recognition for Korean and Vietnam veterans and will feature 50’s & 60’s music. Snacks and refreshments are provided. TEXAS HOLD’EM TOURNAMENT The Mantua Council Knights of Columbus will host their 1st annual Texas Hold’em Tournament, Saturday November 12. Seating is limited and early registration is encouraged with bonus available to those who register before November 5 (all players must pre-register). The first 50 that register will receive $500.00 in extra chips. The cost of entering the tournament is $75.00 (fee includes tourney fee, start up chips, food and pop). The prize will be determined by how many sign up. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. with games starting at 6:00 p.m. A large pay-out is expected (based on required minimum number of players) along with hourly options and a 50/50 drawing. Location is the Sentinel (K of C) Party Center at 11845 St. Rt. 44, Mantua, OH 44255. Proceeds to benefit Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots, and 4C’s at Christmas. We applaud our team of men and women for their dedication to St. Joe’s but are in need of a few more volunteers. Men, women, or e v e n t e e n s n e e d i n g community hours can help.
Cleaning can take place during the week days or evenings, whatever works for a cleaner’s particular schedule. All supplies and vacuums are provided. If you can offer a couple hours once every six weeks, please contact the Parish Office (330-274-2253).
FREE COMMUNITY MEAL You are welcome to join us after the 11:15 Mass for our Free Community Meal. The meal is today, October 30, 12:30-2:00
p.m. and is being hosted by the Safko Family. If you know anyone who would benefit from a delicious meal, invite them to join us. The 4th grade class will be our PSR volunteers (4th grade parents, plan on your students staying after PSR for Mass and serving. They should be done by 2:30 p.m.). ALL SAINTS DAY Tuesday, November 1, is a Holy Day of Obligation, celebrating All Saints Day. Masses are at 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church. You and your school aged children are strong encouraged to attend. CHILDREN’S MASS Our first Children’s Mass of the year has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 6, at 11:15 a.m. Our Children’s Mass occurs twice a year and is a hands-on opportunity for our students to learn and understand the Mass by direct participation in liturgical ministries. PSR students will plan the environment, greet and usher, lector and sing, write petitions and bring up gifts during the Offertory procession. Parents, please make sure your children’s calendars are clear to participate in the Mass, and plan on attending. You’ll find the liturgy is a memorable experience for all who participate. Once again, PSR families will be making and selling food during this event. This concession raises about $1000.00 yearly for our PSR program. We are looking for volunteers throughout the day, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., to set up and clean up, to make and sell food, and for donations of pies and soups. PORTAGE COUNTY DINNER & DOCTRINE The Catholic Parishes of Portage County are once again sponsoring a monthly Dinner & Doctrine series for Catholics of the area to be held at The Overlook, 1519 Overlook Rd., Twin Lakes (formerly the Twin Lakes Country Club). The evenings include a buffet dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m. (with a cash bar) followed by a guest speaker, 7:00-8:00 p.m. The next presentation will be Tuesday, November 15, featuring Ms. Whitney Daly, Director of Campus Ministry, Gilmore Academy. Her topic for the evening will be “Catholic Prayers and Devotions—A Faith Worth Living”. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LIVE NATIVITY The Women’s Auxiliary of the Mantua Knights of Columbus #3766 is presenting a drive-through Live Nativity on St. Joseph Church grounds Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 16, 17 and 18, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Participants include Scouts, 4H
members, PSR students, members of the Women’s Auxiliary, Mantua Knights of Columbus, as well as members of St. Joseph Parish. Come join us in caroling, celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, and have a cup of hot chocolate to keep warm. Admission is a donation of $5.00 per car load and non-perishable food items are also appreciated. Proceeds from this event will help with church repairs. Donations of clean, usable items (no TV’s)
may be dropped off at the Pavilion on
Wednesday, November 2 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
& Thursday, November 3
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, sale hours, and clean-up.
Donations of soups & other food items
for volunteers welcomed.
