GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY—The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016. This year’s event will begin with Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 2, at 2:30 p.m. Bishop Zubik will be the main celebrant and a light reception will follow in the Cathedral Hall. If you are a couple celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary any time in 2016 and would like to receive an invitation to this event, please call the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket no later than Monday, August 15.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE (NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME)—In today’s gospel a servant WAITED for the master to return. Waiting is a normal part of family life. We wait for a child’s birth, then for small legs to catch up. Later we wait for teenagers to return home safely. Finally we wait alone anticipating a call or visit from an adult child. Waiting is sacred time, for even in the waiting we are connected.

Even if you’ve never participated before, please, we invite each and every one of you to join us – you’ll be so glad you did. Please check the bulletin and Parish website (olgscott.org) for more details. The first session begins on Wednesday, September 14 at 9:45 a.m. and Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. Register after Masses on August 27 and 28 in the Church Vestibule or anytime online! FESTIVAL CORNER Thanks to the small group of guys and gal (multi-generations) who worked together to set up the metal booths for the Festival. They will be there on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday this week...stop by if you can. We also had a team that scrubbed the school kitchen so we would be ready to serve hundreds and hundreds of people for the nightly Festival dinners. It takes weeks of prep, that is why your few hours during the week are vital to this weary crew! We hope you come hungry, to share a meal or a sweet treat and good music with your neighbors and those who sit beside you at Mass each week. We ask that you pray for sunshine, invite your friends to our Parish grounds and spread positive energy to make this 2016 Festival extra special! Break down will be Sunday morning, August 21 at 9:00 a.m. We hope to see some fresh faces!

These difficult readings from the scriptures today can lead us into a reflection about how we live our lives: in faith or in fear: -the courageous, hopeful and adventurous way of faith, or -the cynical, timid and safe way of fear. God has invited us on an adventure of faith as we journey toward him in this life; will we accept his invitation? We will risk

the familiar and secure for the new and unexplored. The heroes of faith we heard about from the Old Testament risked their lives to follow the Lord’s calling them into an adventure of faith. In the reading from the book of Wisdom, we heard about the “fathers of faith” who put their trust in God and courageously embarked on a wilderness journey out of slavery in Egypt to the promised land. Their exodus on “that night” was the most formative act of faith in the history of Israel and required that they leave the safety of slavery and begin the faith journey toward freedom. Of course, they had God’s chosen leader, Moses, to guide them, but they had to be willing to risk everything and follow him into the wilderness. And in the letter to the Hebrews, we hear how Abraham, known as the “father of faith”, obeyed God’s call to sojourn in a foreign land, even though he and his wife were older, because his faith was stronger than his fear. And Sarah trusted the Lord’s promise and conceived a son, Isaac, even “though she was past the age” for motherhood. Her faith was strong and she risked everything in the hope of having a child and going to the promised land. And we know how Abraham’s faith was sorely tested by God when he was asked to sacrifice this same child to prove his devotion to God. We know, too, that God did not make Abraham go through with this sacrifice, but spared the boy once Abraham demonstrated his faithful obedience. These heroes of faith from the Old Testament: Moses and the Hebrew slaves, Abraham and Sarah, overcome their doubts and fears and put their confidence in the Lord though they did not know where He was leading them. They believed in their hope and their hope was in the Lord. Can we say the same about ourselves? Do we live a life of faith rather than fear? It is precisely this choice between a life lived in faith or in fear that Jesus challenged his disciples with the selection from Luke’s gospel: “Do not live in fear, little flock. It has pleased your Father to give you the Kingdom.” Jesus himself was the herald of this Kingdom and he urges us all to have faith in him and his passion, death and resurrection. For like the heroes of faith, we too have been called by God to a journey of trust, a spiritual adventure, and Christ himself leads us on this pilgrimage toward our heavenly homeland with God. Jesus encourages us to take a risk and invest our futures in heavenly riches not earthly fortunes because, he instructs us, “Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be.” Are we preoccupied with hording our material treasures out of fear of being without? Or are we occupied with building up our heavenly treasure out of faith in being with God? Give your heart to God! God has entrusted us with the good news of our salvation in Jesus Christ. He asks us to journey with Christ on a great adventure of faith led by his Holy Spirit. How do we respond to God’s gracious invitation? In cynical fear that always seeks the safe and familiar way? Or in hopeful faith that seeks the courageous and holy adventure? The way of fear leads only to death, while the way of faith leads beyond death to life everlasting with God. The author of the letter to the Hebrews explains what this elusive theological virtue means: “Faith is confident assurance concerning what we hope for, and conviction about things we do not see.” Faith assumes trust in God to guide and shape our lives with grace according to His will. To live by faith is to live in the expectation that the Lord provides for those He loves and that He loves us. Faith in the Father’s love given freely to us in Jesus Christ orders and orients our whole being toward God as his sons and daughters. Christian Faith dispels fear, despair and alienation because faith celebrates the revelation of the loving Father given through the Son and shared in the Holy Spirit — the very life of God. Choose faith that you may live! Rev. Richard A. Infante, Pastor
