Hurricane Relief

At the break of dawn, September 21, some two dozen men emerged from their wind-whipped homes carrying chainsaws, hatchets and machetes. A er sizing up the destruc on that Hurricane Maria had swept across the island during the night, they set to work.

For days, these members of San Benito Abad Council 9572, in Pa llas, southeastern Puerto Rico, cleared the way through fallen trees, downed power lines and pieces of homes and other debris. Then came the mammoth task of supplying food and fresh water to a suffering popula on whose electrical grid had been wiped out.

“We thank God who gave our council the opportunity to work together and show people the power of God and of faith through ac ons,” said Grand Knight Noel de León.

De León and his brother Knights in Pa llas were not alone. Throughout the island, Knights mobilized to serve their neighbors in the a ermath of the storm, including helping to orchestrate the distribu on of two huge shipments of food and supplies donated by the Supreme Council.

“When the first shipment arrived, Knights all across Puerto Rico rallied together in planning and pu ng our call to charity into high gear,” José Lebrón-Sanabria said. “Councils, assemblies, state council officers, past state depu es, field agents and lots of wives of members joined forces as never before in the distribu on effort.”

Ongoing local ini a ves have been aided by the Supreme Council, which has commi ed more than $1 million in relief to the island, including material aid for those most in need and funds to help rebuild severely damaged churches and other Catholic ins tu ons.

We will hear excerpts from the Gospel of John on the Sundays from July 29 through August 26. Known as The Bread of Life Discourse, this particular set of readings “interrupts” the continuous reading of Mark’s Gospel, which is heard every third year. The following description of this series comes from the resource for our study. Welcome to the Feast is an invita on to explore the theme of celebra ng God’s unfolding covenant rela onship with humanity in the context of a meal. Star ng with the

Genesis story of Abraham's hospitality in providing a feast for three divine visitors, the menu in Welcome to the Feast begins with ample servings from

the Old Testament before delving into Jesus' many controversial meals with his disciples and other sinners. A er savoring the accounts of miraculous feedings,

the accounts of the Last Supper, as recorded in Paul and the Gospels of Ma hew, Mark, and Luke, become the main course. Then we con nue with the "breaking of the bread," in the book of Acts. Finally, we hear in Jesus' Bread of Life Discourse in John, the call for all who are hungry for true food: Welcome to the Feast!

For your convenience this five-part series will be offered twice in Fitzgerald Hall (lower level of the church):

Monday evenings: 7:00 - 8:30 pm on July 30, August 6, 13, 20, 27 Tuesday mornings: 9:00 - 10:30 am on July 31, August 7, 14, 21, 28

Register by July 23 so that you can receive and prepare the materials for the first gathering.

We Become What We Receive:

Eucharist, Discipleship, and Mission

Presented by Dr. Steven R. Janco

Monday, July 23 at 7:00 – 8:30 pm

In the coming weeks, we will encounter the Bread of Life Discourse of Jesus found in Chapter 7 of the Gospel of John. We proclaim and hear these readings once every three years, but we gather to celebrate the Eucharist every week of every year. How does the Eucharist form and transform us into the Body of Christ—and how does our pattern of celebration prepare us for our mission as Christ’s disciples in the world? We will take a little time to reflect on the message of several communion songs—each providing a particular lens through which to express and reflect upon Christ’s enduring gift, as well as a particular challenge to those who come together as the Body of Christ and are sent forth as bread broken and blood poured out for the life of the world.

Dr. Steven R. Janco Steve Janco serves part-time as Director of Liturgy and Music at St. Eulalia Parish in Maywood. From 2006 – 2017, he served as Director of the Rensselaer Program of Church Music and Liturgy at Saint Joseph’s College, Rensselaer, Indiana. Steve is an active composer, perhaps known best for three widely used Mass settings; We sing one of them at Saint Joseph Church. He is the author of numerous journal articles and has contributed to several recent books. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in liturgy from Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park. He lives in Forest Park.

24 Reasons for Spending Time Before the Blessed Sacrament: h p://www. ny.cc/adorechrist

The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
