Missions Appeal for Blessed Sacrament Congregation

to be held September 24 & 25 Fr. Hermie Garcia will be visiting our parish on the weekend of September 17 & 18

and will be doing a Missions Appeal for the Blessed Sacrament Congregation.

A second collection will be taken at all Masses on the following weekend of

September 24 & 25.

St. Joseph School’s 24th

Annual Country Fair! The St. Joseph’s School Country Fair is set for Satur-

day, October 1, 2011 from 8am-3pm on the SJS

High School Grounds.

We are seeking help with the set up and disman-

tling of booths and tents. And we are wishing for;

Baked Goods, Silent Auction items, Craft items, In-

door games, pickles & preserves, plants, flowers,

Catholic Charities Second Collection: The Bishop has set the weekend of September 17 & 18 as Catholic Charities

weekend. All parishes will be taking a second collection to help support the Mis-

sion of Catholic Charities—Helping people in need to help themselves, regard-

less of their faith.

We will begin using the new words of the Mass from the Roman Mis-sal - Third Edition the First Sunday of Advent this year. Some par-ishes will begin using new service music for the Gloria, Sanctus, and Memorial Acclamations this month.

To date we have discussed the Opening Rites and the Liturgy of the Word, with a special focus on the Profession of Faith. This month I will begin to share with you some changes you can anticipate to the words of the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

After the priest prepares the altar, he will invite people to pray by saying, "Pray brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours, may be ac-ceptable ... " The change from "our sacrifice" (which the priest currently says) to "my sacrifice and yours" reminds us of that each of us, priest and people, head and members of the Body of Christ, are offering to-gether the once and for all sacrifice of Christ on the cross w hen we cele-brate Mass.

Our response to the priest's invitation contains only a slight change with the addition of a single word "holy." "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church." The Latin text contains the word "holy."

The Preface Dialog has only some minor changes. It begins with the new formula, "The Lord be with you" and we respond, "And with your spir-it." The priest continues, "Lift up your hearts." We respond, "We lift them up to the Lord." After the priest prays, "Let us give thanks to the Lord our God" our response will be simply, "It is right and just." This is a more literal translation of the Latin text and many of the Prefaces will build on those words by beginning, "It is truly right and just." It adds a poetic quality to the prayer and reminds us that giving thanks to God (which is what "eucharist" means) is fitting for God's people. We offer to God our gratitude for all the marvelous things he has done, and chiefly, for saving us by the Lord's death and resurrection.

The Sanctus will be slightly different too. In this beautiful song that blends our voices with those of the angels and saints in heaven, we will pray, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts!" Currently we sing, " ... Lord God of power and might." Power and might are attributes of God. The Latin text actually uses the Hebrew word "sabbaoth" which refers to God's command over an army of angels. The new word "hosts" echos the words of Scripture when the Prophet Isaiah had a vision of God (Isaiah Ch. 6). "Hosts" refers to all the invisible powers at work at God's com-mand, the whole company of heaven. It's a powerful reminder that at this point in the Mass earth and heaven are joined together in offering praise. The rest of the Sanctus is unchanged.

Next month we will look more closely at some new words you will

hear in the Eucharistic Prayer.
