Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 4, 2018

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there

also. For this purpose I have come.” [Mark 1:38]

Bringing life into the world is about the most satisfying

thing a person can do. Just ask a new parent to share their

iPhone photos of their baby with you. They will tell you about

it. But so will artists, teachers, preachers, folks in healing and

helping professions of every kind. When we bring life into the

world with music, words, understanding, a new idea, or a ten-

der touch, we experience the thrill of deep communion with

God. I am here for this purpose, we find ourselves saying.

Thus it is with me, your pastor. I responded to a call to

preach the good news over 40 years ago. As a priest, I have

been charged with the task of wrestling with God’s Word and

attempting to proclaim it to you. I don’t entirely understand it

myself, but I believe that I must communicate it to you the

best I can for your redemption and for my own.

Please join with me in celebrating my 40th Ordination An-

niversary this weekend in the ministerial priesthood of Jesus

Christ. We share in this priesthood of Christ through our com-

mon baptism into it. But my vocation is to be a living reminder

that we are all constantly called to prayer, to sacrifice, to work

to embody the love of God in our lives and in our world. An-

other way of saying this is that I am here to mirror the love of

God to you and to mirror your dignity as God’s beloved sons

and daughters back to you. This is a contemplative role, be-

holding the goodness of God in you. Thank you for revealing

the face of Christ to me, in your generous goodness, friend-

ship, service, and stewardship! I am grateful that God has

called me to serve with you at St. Joseph Church in Waycross.

.

Question of the week: How does Jesus figure in your hap-

piness? Is God’s purpose being fulfilled in you in a way that

brings you joy?

Your pastor - Fr. Bob Cushing

Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

de Febrero, 2018

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

atentar proclamársela a ustedes.

Bob Cushing

Father of Mercy, your Holy Spirit has called us from many lands and cultures to become the faith community of St. Joseph Parish. You gather us to proclaim your Word of Mercy for all through prayer, sacrament, and service. Prayer is the food of the soul…. Anyone who re-stricted himself to dining every three or four days would soon become weak and would run the risk of dying, or, if he lived would be exhausted, incapable of performing any useful function, a mere carcass without either force or vigor: so the soul which does not nourish itself with prayer, or does so only rarely, will become tepid and sickly, without either courage or virtue, a nuisance to others and unbear-able to itself.

ic items, and all items must be in good clean condi-

tion. You can take your items by the parish hall,

and we will add them to the Country

Store inventory.

Thank you very much for your help! Connie Interval, 912-387-9214

Living the Eucharist: had Sign-Up Sundays over the last two weeks. We had a good response with parishioners deciding to join small groups or partici-pate within their families. If you have not signed up, it is not too late. You can register with one of our coordinating team members. Contact Montse Diaz, Jesus Velez, or Anna Saucedo. Group members will receive their booklets from their respective group facilitators.

Evangelization Meeting this Wednesday night, Feb 7, at 7 PM in the conference room will hand out all the necessary booklets to the group facilita-tors as well as consider all the resources we will employ for the parish for Lent.

“Thou shall NOT Chew Gum in Church!” This last week, the parish spent over $1,000 to have Serve-Pro

clean the pews’ seat cushions and all the carpeting in church and hallways. [We appreciate Bob Interval’s stewardship to make this happen! He also changed the

church chimes for us to enter “ordinary time.”] But they could not get all the GUM out of the cracks in the back of the seat cushions in the pews. Chewing Gum is

forbidden in Church!

¡Comer

chicle en la Iglesia está prohibido!

RCIA – The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults – will meet Tuesday evening, at 7:15 PM on Febru-ary 6 to reflect on “the Commandments and the Precepts of the Church” in the parish hall. How are we called to live the life of Christ? Come and see. For more information, contact Fr. Bob at [email protected] or 478-284-5235 or call Fran McElroy 267-496-1965; [email protected].

Funeral for Mac Munn: Our Parish Family ex-

tends heart-felt condolences to Barbara Munn on

the loss of her husband, Mac, last Sunday in

Florida. We will celebrate a special Mass of the

Resurrection for him on Saturday, February 17,

at 11 AM, followed by a dinner reception in the

parish hall.

Please send your condolences to:

Barbara Munn

P.O. Box 2186

Waycross, GA 31502

Today is Loaves and Fishes Sunday: Thanks for bringing non-perishable food items in for the food pan-

try! We will bring them up with the collection.

The Blessing of Throats: The healing theme is BIG in the scriptures again today: Jesus reveals the

reign of God through healing people and that minis-try never stops. This Saturday is St. Blaise Day, so we will have the traditional option for healing prayer

over our throats at the end of each Mass this week-end. The prayer that the priest says: “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and martyr, may

you be healed of every ailment of the throat and all other illness, in the name of Christ our Lord.”

Future Planning: Times for Mass on Easter Sunday, April 1, have been reconfigured so that we will have an extra Mass to serve our needs better at 9 AM in English and 11 AM Bilin-gual, followed by the usual Easter Egg Hunt for kids at 12:30. Lent is soon! Masses on Ash Wednesday next week are 12:10 PM and 7 PM with a “Simple Supper” after the evening Mass supplied by the parish pastoral council. Remem-ber that Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are our TWO big days of FAST and ABSTINENCE. There will be a simple prayer service for the dis-tribution of Ashes at Ware County High School at 7:15 AM on February 14.

Fr. Bob’s 40th Anniversary of Ordination is this weekend. It is a 3-day celebration (of “BIBLICAL Pro-portions,” he said!): YOU ARE INVITED either Satur-day night Feb 3 with most of our English-speaking community to share in the Pot-luck Supper in the Par-ish Hall after Mass with a little program of commemora-tion… or on Sunday night – February 4 – the gala is repeated in a Spanish tradition after the 6 PM Mass. On Monday night, Feb 5, our Bishops, clergy and reli-gious of the Diocese are coming to celebrate with his family and friends from around the country. The Mass

is open for us all to enjoy but the Banquet after-wards is by invitation only because of the limited num-ber of seats. CCW and the Knights are being asked to pitch in assisting in the details of hospitality, especially for the out of town folk on Monday.

Question: What do you give a priest on his 40th An-

niversary of Ordination? Answer: A note or card ex-pressing how you have awakened to your own faith in God, via fuller participation in the life of the Church and the sacraments, and thanking him for his part in that. [one token of appreciation that he enjoys is an AMA-ZON CARD!]

Word from Pope Francis:

“Don’t be afraid to aim for holiness and turn yourselves over to the love of God. Holiness does not mean performing extraordinary things but carrying out daily things in an extraordinary way-that is, with love, joy and faith.”
