Dear Members & Friends
I write this message to you as I sit in the Library of Yale Divinity School, gazing out from a large clear window upon its cozy academic quadrangle. It is not unlike the academic village which Thomas Jefferson founded in Charlottesville, Virginia some fifty years earlier in 1817.
I am here for a couple of days of Andover-Newton Seminary Convocation, classes, and Alum-ni/ae Board of Directors meetings. It is heartwarming to see the vitality present among stu-dents and faculty, which to me bodes well for the future of what we in the United Church of Christ have always valued - "A learned Clergy, built upon deep spiritual roots."
The 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation is being commemorated here at St John's Church the last two Sundays of October, when on the 31st of October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door in Germany. I hope that you take advantage of these two Sundays, and even invite a friend or two as well.
SUNDAY, Oct 15
Special Guest: Rev Steve Nance, Reformation Scholar and Hymnody Historian
9 am - All-Church Adult Education Class with Rev Nance; He will also preach at 10 am Worship.
SUNDAY, Oct 29
Reformation Musical extravaganza! We welcome a dynamic duo from North Carolina, "Dust & Ashes,” long time friends of Ernie & Jeannie Welch. They will be lead worship in song at 10 am, and then return at 7 pm in the Sanctuary for an open Concert. PLEASE SAVE THIS DATE, and invite family, friends and acquaintances to either or both of these events. Sue McMurtray is planning a very special collation reception after the 7 pm Concert - offer your help to her if you would like.

Do you know these hymns?
Blessed Assurance
Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior
To God Be the Glory
The Amazing story about the composer, Fanny
Crosby, who was born in Brewster, NY, on March
24, 1820 and died on February 12, 1915. After
being alive for only 7 weeks of age, she became
blind. However, during her lifetime, she wrote and
had published over 8000 hymns. Many of these are familiar to us and many of
them we sing and hear in church many times. She also wrote over 1000 secu-
lar poems.
She spent much of her life in the New York City area. In her later life, after age
60, she made a commitment to Christ to serve the poor and devote the rest of
her life to home missionary work. Her goal was to bring one million people to
Christ.
One of Fanny’s famous quotes was:
“We are traveling on with staff in hand,
We are pilgrims bound for the heavenly land.”

Fall is by far our favorite season at the Nursery school. Our
Nursery School children are eager to learn about all of the chang-
es that are happening outside. We are reading books, going on na-
ture walks, and appreciating the beauty that God has given us with
the arrival of this season of change.
We had a very busy and successful October. Many of the children experienced their first
school picture. You can view our nursery school children school pictures in the nursery
school hallway near the restrooms. Our nursery school families planned fun fall fest crafts
and activities and the children even found a pumpkin in our pumpkin patch. A big thank you
to the Fayetteville Fire Department for visiting our nursery school children, and teaching
them about fire safety. We began our guest reader program where members of the church
come to read to our children once a week. Please see Linda Zeger if you are interested in
reading to our nursery school children.
Nursery School Sunday was a success with 41 children participating and over 175 family
members filled the church. Thank you to the Nursery School Ministry for planning and or-
ganizing this special day and to all of the church members for welcoming our nursery school
families!
We begin our next fundraiser this month. Stock up on Butcher Shoppe cookie dough and
Big Oak Café coffee for the holidays. The Nursery School Ministry members will be selling
cookie dough for $15/3lb tub, Big Oak Café coffee for $12/lb before and after church services
on November 5th and November 12th. Cookie dough and coffee will be available for pick up
on Thursday, December 7th or Sunday, December 10thin the Kitchen freezer. Also be sure to
check the news in the pews and the back table in the sanctuary for information on our next
restaurant fundraiser.
As we prepare for the upcoming Holidays, we are thankful for all that we are blessed with.
We appreciate those family, friends, co workers, parents, and community members whom
we come in contact with every day and who support our mission here at St. John’s Nursery
school.
We wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

For the past seven years teams from St John's have joined with members of First UCC
Carlisle in participating in outreach mission trips. These trips have provided housing
construction and repair help to families in regions in need. Our groups have gone to Biloxi,
Mississippi to help with home repair following Hurricane Katrina; we've done housing recovery
in New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy and worked most recently in a depressed area in the
Appalachian mountains of Eastern Kentucky doing carpentry and framing work, forming and
pouring foundation walls, as well as home cleanup for future rental.
During all of our trips to different regions of the country we enjoyed opportunities to
experience the local culture which included meals and walking tour of New Orleans, as well as
storytelling and bluegrass music, and exploring some of the back country hiking trails in coal
country.
There are opportunities for all skill and energy levels as we respond to our call to love one
another by helping others including support responsibilities to "hold the fort down". If you're not
comfortable working on site there are other areas of need including cooking for the group or just
keeping the living facilities in livable order. We have also been able to provide for some of the
social needs of the community including helping in soup kitchens, and providing for the needs of
homeless people, especially on the Biloxi trips. The folks that have been able to participate have
had very fulfilling experiences and would love to encourage more people to participate. With
that in mind please give some thought to places that may be in your heart to go serve and offer
some suggestions along with times of the year that may work best. The groups in the past have
found that one week works best, staying relatively close to home to cut down on travel time.
Please be in contact with any member of the Outreach Ministry team with your ideas or
concerns.

service that will be centered on the need for and the availability of
healing through prayer and God’s grace. The scriptures,

Five ladies “braved” the rainy weather and celebrated
Halloween at Longhorn Steakhouse on the SECOND WEDNESDAY
of October. Each was asked, “Which candy bar would you want
to find in a basket of treats?” Those answers became part of a
game called, “Candy Quiz.” That small group was able to fill a
large grocery bag with items for OSI’s “Token Store.”
Cracker Barrel Restaurant on Wayne Avenue was chosen
for November’s luncheon, Nov. 8th. We will be “THANKFUL” if our
group is larger. Bev needs to
have a number for Cracker
Barrel. Call Bev @ 717-263-
5553 if you can join the ladies.
BUT REMEMBER
November 8th is also the tea at
Hickory Bridge Farm.
