February 25, 2018 - The Second Sunday of Lent

How are your Lenten resolutions? By the time week two rolls around, plenty of well-meaning

people have skipped, neglected, or outright

forgotten their Lenten resolutions at least once. It can be easy to start excusing our Lenten commitments altogether. 00000000

Last week we saw Jesus driven into the desert. This Sunday, we see Jesus leading his disciples

to an equally barren place: he "led them up a high mountain apart by themselves." But what happens there? "And he was transfigured before

them and his clothes became dazzling white."

Today's Gospel reminds us of the goal. We don't enter into the desert for the sake of suffering, but f o r t he sake o f t r ans fo rma t i on .

Mountain imagery is prevalent throughout Scripture. The sacrifice of Isaac, Moses receiving the 10 Commandments, Elijah's revelation of God

as a tiny whispering sound: all these occur on the

mountaintop. Mountains are strenuous to hike. To assist the traveler in the assent, trails often

involve switchbacks. These lead the traveler back

and forth across the mountainside, sometimes appearing as if hardly any ground is gained. Perhaps Peter, James, and John hiked a similar

path as Jesus led them up the side of Mount Tabor. 000000000000000

A climb is difficult. A climb in a barren place leaves you thirsty, exhausted, and quite possibly frustrated or discouraged. Yet this is precisely

how Jesus leads his closest disciples. Why?

Because he has something to reveal to them. Practically speaking, Jesus needed to bring Peter, James and John away from the crowds for

this revelation of glory to remain hidden. There are spiritual truths we will encounter only if we pass through difficulty. So let's persevere this

Lent! Today's Gospel invites us to trust that, if we

persevere in following Jesus, he'll lead us to something beautiful and glorious as well.

Lenten Bible Study The Lenten Bible Study continues to be held on the Thursdays of Lent, and concludes on Thurs-day, March 22nd. We will focus on the Scrip-tures for the following Sunday, and how the Holy Spirit speaks to us in these sacred words. These sessions will be facilitated by Deacon Greg, and will begin promptly at 7:00 PM in the first floor meeting room of the Most Holy Name School Building. Handouts will be provided, and each session will conclude at 8:00 PM. Please con-sider making this time of openness to God's Word a part of your Lenten observance!

The Light is on for you On Wednesday, March 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available in every parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Now is the time. God is waiting to offer you forgiveness, heal-ing and peace. The light is on and the confessional door will be open.

Mass Intentions for Fr. Garvey Fr. Garvey has moved on to St. John Vianney Manor and continues to pray for our Mass Inten-tions at his daily Mass there. We will provide Fr. Garvey with a list of intentions each month for as long as we can. We are asking for more inten-tions for this purpose. We will list these inten-tions, just like we have in the past, in our first bul-letin of the month. Our prayers for the dead help our loved ones work through their experience of Purgatory. The Mass is the best prayer for this. Masses may also be offered for the living for spe-cial intentions or as a Spiritual Bouquet for their benefit as God sees best. During Lent, the Ladies of Charity will be col-lecting socks for homeless men and women and for the children at Providence Connections, a ministry on the North Side involved with at risk families with children. Socks come to mind be-cause of the Holy Thursday tradition of Washing of the Feet. We keep in touch with the homeless shelters and they have told us they always need socks. All socks should be new. They can be white socks, colored socks, wool socks, cotton socks, cute socks for kids, baby socks etc. If you are unable to shop, a monetary donation can be made and the Ladies of Charity will shop for you. Cash or checks payable to La-dies of Charity can be dropped into the bin. Look for the SOCK DRIVE bin in church during Lent! Thank you!

It Is Good That We Are Here – As Jesus was transfigured in dazzling white with Moses and Elijah on Mount Tabor the Apostles do not want the

moment to end. We can only imagine what it was like to see Jesus in splendor and glory and can also understand the Apostles’ desire to stay there for ever. After all, isn’t that what we anticipate heaven to be like? Yet, days before, these same Apostles wanted nothing to do with Jesus telling them that he must suffer and die and that they must take up their crosses and follow him to be his disciples. Do we, at times, want all the glory without any of the work and suffering? During this Lenten season it is very good that we are with Jesus in his suffering, so that we might be with him one day in his glory. The same is true of our journey On Mission for The Church Alive! While there may be great challenges in forming new, vibrant communities of faith, the new life possible for our parishes will shine brightly and be re-flected in our lives. May we remain devoted to prayer, fasting and good works this Lent so that our hearts will be made ready for all that lies in store for us. Rivers Casino Trip The next trip to the River’s Casino is on Thursday, March 8th. The cost of the trip is $20 and you will get back $20 in free play and $5 in food. The bus will leave St. Aloysius at 10:00 am and then pick up at Wesbanco in Troy Hill. The bus leaves the casino at 3:45 pm to return home. Rummage House Update The Rummage House has a need for infants clothing and baby items such as blankets, paja-mas or other items at this time. Anyone wanting to donate, the enclosed back porch is always unlocked to leave any donations. We appreciate all donations as we prepare for our 1st sale on March 10th and 11th.
