* * * * * 2015 Lenten Regulations

1. The days of both “Fast and Abstinence” during Lent are Ash Wednesday, February 10th and Good Friday, March 25th. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night, March 26th) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ouselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.

The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. 2. On a day of *Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted and two smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. **Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of *Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. **Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14th, 2016 to the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22, 2016.

Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, which offers us an annual opportunity to remember and renew our faith. Be it through the devotions of the Stations of the Cross (Spanish - 6:30pm; English 7pm - Fridays of Lent starting this Friday), Eucharistic Adoration (1st Friday overnight 8pm to 7am); Wednesdays during Lent 12 noon to 6:30pm starting Feb. 17), or Marian Consecration (Sundays during Lent starting Feb. 14th), we make openings in our everyday routine to concentrate a bit more purposefully on our relationship with God.

The upcoming Women’s and Men’s Reflection Days highlighted in the inserts in today’s bulletin are also recommended means of spiritual growth and renewal. Particularly in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, may I suggest that we strive to pray for our enemies, be they friends or relatives or others who have hurt us or those who threaten our world more globally. If you don’t know how to pray, open the Bible to one of the Psalms and use these words of long ago.

+++

Today we begin this year’s “Sharing God’s Blessings” Annual Appeal. Many of you may have already received a solicitation from the Archdiocese in the mail. Because 215 of our parish families contributed so generously to last year’s “We Are Living Stones” Capital Campaign, the Archdiocese has agreed to keep our Annual Appeal goal the same as what was taken last year, namely $92,953.00. Also, there is no specific stretch goal this year, but for us to receive at least $50,000.00 in rebates from the Annual Appeal, we need to reach $173,598.16. I would hope that not only the Campaign givers but also the other more than 200 usual contributors to the Annual Appeal in the past will help again this year, and I personally invite EVERY PARISH FAMILY to make some gift to this year’s Annual Appeal. As you will see in today’s video presentation, it really does support so many programs for the poor, for schools and parishes, for our youth, seminarians, and priests. PLEASE HELP THIS YEAR!

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Common to today’s readings is an admission that we are sinful, unworthy, unclean people. Isaiah calls himself “a man of unclean lips.” Peter says, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Paul identifies himself as “the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle.” Also common to our readings is the power of God’s mercy. Touching Isaiah’s mouth the angel says, “your wickedness is removed, your sin is purged.” Isaiah is freed to proclaim God’s presence, responding to God’s call. Jesus tells Simon, “Do not be afraid, for now you will be catching” people. Paul proclaims, “By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective.”

We respond to the invitation to Communion, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.” We proclaim our sinfulness. “Only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” We proclaim our trust in God’s mercy. This coming Wednesday we begin Lent, a springtime retreat to renew the life of Christ we promised to live at Baptism. We name our sinfulness. We invite God’s healing touch. We walk with sisters and brothers preparing for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. We witness that God can take away whatever is sinful and defective in our lives in order to bring out what is upright, strong, and good.

These last days of Ordinary Time, name your sinfulness like Isaiah, Peter, and Paul. Thank God for marvelous, merciful love as they did, too. Hear God’s invitation: “Whom shall I send?” Respond like Isaiah, “Here I am, send me.” Fish for people, casting wide your net as Christ casts wide the net of God’s mercy.

“Merciful God, thank you for your generous mercy. Help me proclaim your merciful love to those I meet. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me.’” Is. 6: 8

Every day—in little ways and in big ways—God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry or just someone to open a door for a stranger, God constantly provides doors of opportunity. The next time you hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say, “Here I am, Lord.”
