St. John the Guardian of Our Lady

Dear Friends, When Our Lady appeared in 1830, to St. Catherine Labouré, a french sister stationed in Paris, she gave her a medal, today known as the Miraculous Medal of Our Lady. This medal is considered by the Church to be a sacramental along with the scapular, rosary, holy oil, holy water, and a crucifix, all meant to draw our minds and hearts over to God. On the front side of this medal is an image of Mary, standing on a half globe where her foot is crush-ing the head of the serpent, Satan. Her hands and feet have bright jewels on them, and she is holding a small globe of the world, with the inscription, "O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have re-course to thee." On the back of the medal is the letter 'M' on a cross amid 12 stars, representing the twelve apostles. Under the 'M' are two hearts afire, where one has thorns and the other heart is pierced by a sword repre-senting Mary's sorrows. Our parish's annual novena of the Miraculous Medal of Our Lady is graced time for us to grow closer to Our Lord with the help and example of His Mother Mary. From October 6 to October 14 we gathered in our church to honor Mary, the first and greatest disciple of Our Lord. It was meant to be a time where we draw closer to Our Lord, and pray for the seven graces marking Mary's life: obedience, perse-verance, patience, humility, charity, hope and faith. On each evening we had a different priest lead us in prayer and offer their reflections. “Everyone should have a genuine devotion to (Mary) and entrust his life to her motherly care."
