Dear Friends of St. John the Baptist,

First of all, I’d like to thank the Spiritual Life Committee

and all the members of the parish community that assisted

with or provided instruction or activities for the First Annual

Summer Faith Fest. These beautiful evenings consisted of a

shared meal, prayer, and presentations and activities for chil-

dren of all ages and adults. Many of the items necessary to

have the Faith Fest were donated by you, our parishioners, for

which we are all very grateful. I’m happy to say that, in all, we

had approximately 60-70 participants. On a personal note, I

can honestly say that a lasting memory for me will be singing

and dancing to the song “Father Abraham” with many of the

children that attended.

On a different note, shortly after he became our Pope, Pope

Francis said that he “prefers a church which is bruised, hurting

and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a

church, which is unhealthy from being confined and from cling-

ing to its own security.” In other words, we should always be

willing to reach out to others, not just ourselves. Our Mercy

Day for July is a Blood Drive, which gives us an excellent op-

portunity to be that Church that reaches out to others that

Pope Francis longs to see. The Blood Drive is scheduled for

Saturday, July 16th from 9am to noon, here at St. John the

Baptist. Registrations will take place after Masses this weekend

and next weekend. I hope that you will participate in this very

worthwhile and noble endeavor.

Finally, although our office will be closing on the 4th of

July, I do want to take the opportunity to wish you, and all of

our parishioners, a very happy Independence Day. As an

American, I never fully appreciated the true meaning of the

4th of July until the years I lived in Europe from 1982 to 1986.

Somewhat suddenly and unexpectedly, I gained a new appre-

ciation for this place we call home. In spite of our many chal-

lenges, in spite of our struggles, how blessed we are to live in

a place where we are all given the opportunity to be free. And

in this way, we can also enjoy the freedom of being the chil-

dren of God, and brothers and sisters in Christ to one another.

Happy 4th of July, and God bless you, and our St. John the

Baptist Parish Family.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. David
