December 16th—Third Sunday of Advent

December 16, 2018
The Third Sunday of Advent, “Gaudete Sunday” from the Latin for “Sunday to Rejoice,” marks the midpoint of Advent when the vestments can be a little lighter and the rose candle on the Advent wreath is lit. The joy of this Sunday comes from appreciating the fact that our Christ-
mas doesn’t have to be picture-perfect to be truly Christmas. Christ can come to us in our imperfection.

As of December 3, 2018, St. John the Apostle Parish has raised $1,792.31! Your support ensures that we can provide the material and emotional support nec-essary for men and women to choose life for their babies. Some-times, just the simple fact that our doors are open and a woman visits us, rather than an abortion provider, is the difference between life and death. We greatly appreciate your support, and ask that you keep Wa-terleaf in your prayers. For infor-mation about Waterleaf and our programs and services, please con-tact us at 630-701-6270 or visit us on the web at www.onechoiceonelife.org.

The Religious Education Students and the Council of Catholic Women are team-ing up to gather donations for the Catho-lic Charities Holiday Outreach Program. From November 23 through December 17, there will be large decorated boxes in the church narthex where you can place donations of new and unwrapped items. New items needed are: toys, hats, gloves, boots, and clothing for children of all ag-es; as well as twin-size blankets and twin-size sheet sets for Hope House, a local family shelter. Gift cards are also welcome. Please put them in an envelope marked “Holiday Outreach” and place them in the collec-tion basket. Thanks for your generosity
ABBEY FARMS Abbey Farms prides itself on being a strong community member. As we have in years past, we are offering free hot chocolate on the weekends, free sleds for families to use (when there is snow!) and wood-burning warming fires to help chase away the chilly winter airs. This year we have added our new barn warming station as well as our season store, to go with freshly made donuts and Pine Tree Café offerings. 100% of the money earned from the Christmas Joy sea-sonal sales go directly back to Marmion Ab-bey. As always, each station will have a vari-ety of wreaths and garlands, along with great holiday gift items for sale in our store. Pre-Cut Christmas Trees available. For more information call: 630-966-7775 (extension 6), or email the farm at:

By partnering with Catholic Charities and Northern Illinois Food Bank, we can purchase a Holi-day feast for eight. The dinner features turkey as the centerpiece, vegetables, stuffing and gravy as the side dishes, fruit, coffee and dessert. A donation in any amount is joyfully welcomed. Waterleaf Miracle of the Month for December, 2018
“Julie” came to us feeling she is not prepared to be a parent. She initially intended to abort her pregnancy, and her boyfriend was supporting this decision. During a spiritual discussion, she said she’s prays to God for guidance every day. She appeared interested in the ultrasound, remarking that is was interesting to see. She was still undecided after her appointment but agreed to come back for a follow up to check progress. When we saw her a second time, “Julie” stated she de-cided to keep the baby, and that when we prayed with her at the previous appointment, she “knew that it was a sign from God.” She has the support of family and friends. The father is OK with her keeping the ba-by. She said that it’s “not about us, it’s about the baby.”
