Blessing of Throats Wednesday, February 3, 2016

The practice of Blessing of Throats on February 3rd originated with St. Blaise. As legend has it, a mother came to St. Blaise because her young son had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At. St. Blaise’s command, the child was able to cough up the bone. We pray through the intercession of St. Blaise that God delivers us from throat ailments and from every other evil. The Blessing of Throats will take place after the 7:00am, 9:00am, and 7:30pm Masses on Wednesday, February 3rd.

Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend begins Catholic Schools Week. Today, at all the Masses, members of our Transfiguration Academy community will be speaking with us about this wonderful education experience on our parish campus. Parents who send their children to Transfiguration have found the many positives of our Catholic School. Parents with children currently in public school are asked to listen to these sharings and consider coming over to the special EXPO today in Conlon Hall. They will come to learn that the Transfiguration Academy experience is worth whatever sacrifices may be required for the benefit of their child’s future. Parishioners are also invited to the EXPO (and Pancake Breakfast) to see up close this marvelous opportunity for Catholic Education that all of us support through our contributions to our parish, which maintains the building, and to the Archdiocese, which provides some key services to our school!

+++

Sincere thanks to our custodians, Boy Scouts, contractors, and other volunteers for the marvelous job all did to keep our church open for all parish Masses, baptisms, and afternoon services during last week’s Blizzard of 2016. God bless you all!

+++

Next week we begin this year’s “Sharing God’s Blessings” Annual Appeal. Many of you may have already received a solicitation from the Archdiocese in the mail. Because 215 of our parish families contributed so generously to last year’s “We Are Living Stones” Capital Campaign, the Archdiocese has agreed to keep our Annual Appeal goal the same as what was taken last year, namely $92,953.00. Also, there is no specific stretch goal this year, but for us to receive at least $50,000.00 in rebates from the Annual Appeal, we need to reach $173,598.16. I would hope that not only the Campaign givers but also the other more than 200 usual contributors to the Annual Appeal in the past will help again this year, and I personally invite EVERY PARISH FAMILY to make some gift to this year’s Annual Appeal. As you will see in next week’s video presentation, it really does support so many programs for the poor, for schools and parishes, for our youth, seminarians, and priests. PLEASE HELP THIS YEAR!

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

How often have you said “I know him” or “I can tell you stories about her.” How often has fear of what people might think or say about you kept you from speaking out in faith or on behalf of something or someone in whom you believe? We can be prisoners to how we think people will respond. We can imprison others by thinking we really know them.

Jesus’ hearers think they know him and they think they know what fidelity to the Covenant means. So when he speaks boldly, using examples that stretch their preconceived understanding about God, it is too much for them. Rather than listen, they drive him out, hoping to kill him. He does not give them power by keeping silent or lashing out. He simply “passed through the midst of them and went away,” living the love described in Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians.

Jeremiah spoke in the face of great odds, too. He was too young. His message, God’s message, challenged the preconceptions of his day. He was tempted to throw in the towel. But God’s promise to strengthen and be with him freed him to speak out, no matter the cost.

We only know partially. None of us has the big, much less the complete, picture. God’s love described in today’s second reading can free us from partial understandings and the prisons of fear that keep us from living our beliefs. It can free us from misconceptions about what we think we know. Step out in faith like Jeremiah. Speak with confidence like Jesus. Turn to God’s love today and be free.

“Loving God, you promise to be with us and deliver us. Give me trust in your promise to live my faith clearly today and speak the truth of your ways in love. Surprise me. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous.” - 1 Cortinthians 13:4

Do you get jealous? Do you focus more on the things that other people have than on the gifts that God has given to you? Are you pompous? Do you acquire more possessions to impress others? At times we are all guilty of these things. Pray for more humility. Pray to become less self-centered and more God-centered.

Adoption Law Changes In mid-2014, The State of New Jersey changed the law regarding the ability of adoptees to obtain access to full birth record information. That law now takes effect on Jan. 1, 2017. During this year, all of the dioceses in New Jersey are looking to help educate everyone about the changes and how they may affect so many women who had given up their newborn babies decades ago and who may not be aware of the changes. It is recommended that those interested go to the New Jersey Catholic Conference website: http://www.njcathconf.com/ where copies of the NJ State forms can be downloaded by and for individuals who do not wish to be contacted or who want to limit the kind of information they will provide under the new law. Informative flyers are at the exits of the church with more details and information. Please take a copy as you leave Mass today.
