THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

WE WELCOME those who have recently

entered into our faith through the waters of Baptism: Emily Ryan Ravid, daughter of Elad and Shannon.

BEST WISHES to Bertha Amaya and

Brendan Sheets who were recently joined in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. May they grow together in Christ’s love.

HEARING IMPAIRED? Amplification devices are

available for anyone having difficulty hearing the Mass. If you would like to use one, just ask an usher before Mass. Also, the parish has purchased large-print Sunday Missals to help you worship. If you would like one for your personal use contact Jo-Ann Duggan at [email protected] or 703-860-6149.

THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS: 1 Kings 3:5, 7-12; Psalm 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-128,

129-130; Romans 8:28-30; Matthew 13:44-52

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of heaven is worth pursuing at any cost. St. Francis de Sales gives us some practical advice on how to keep advancing in our pursuit of the Kingdom: All we have to do is nothing more than what we are doing: adore the lovable providence of God, and throw ourselves into God’s arms and keeping. Oh, how blessed are they who choose to place themselves in God’s hands! To renew and conform ourselves to this choice, we merely need to say that we love only God and love all else for the love of God. This continual aspiration is very helpful in applying all our works to love; it is especially useful for our ordinary little actions in everyday tasks. The tasks required for each person’s calling increase divine love, and gild a work of holiness. Let us be like the valiant woman of the Old Testament. “She puts her hand to strong, generous, and exalted things and yet does not disdain to spin and turn the spindle.” Put your hands to strong things, by training yourself in prayer and meditation, receiving the sacraments, bringing souls to love God and infusing good inspirations into their hearts. Perform important works according to your vocation. But never forget your spinning and spindle. That is, practice those little virtues of simplicity, patience, humility and gentleness that grow like flowers when we do little deeds with great love.

The nightingale has no less love for its song when it pauses than when it sings. Similarly, the devout heart has no less love when it turns to external duties than when it prays. In such hearts their silence and their speech, their work and their rest equally sing with joy-filled love. Their daily prayer life overflows into their daily actions. They seek the Kingdom of God at all cost and it is revealed to them.

Adapted from the writings of St. Francis de Sales especially “Treatise on the Love of God”

NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS: Next weekend

we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord. Please prepare for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these texts from God’s Word:

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 During a persecution of the people of God, the prophet contemplates in a vision the Son of Man enthroned in the presence of God. This mysterious personage, who will assure the eternal reign of the Most High, represents the people who now suffer for their faith but who will someday rejoice in heavenly glory. Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 9: The Lord is King The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth. 2 Peter 1:16-19 The experience of the transfiguration confirmed the apostles’ faith in Jesus, Son of God. Peter wants to share that conviction with Christians. Know well: Christ is not a fable, but a living person who can lead us into the fullness of light. Matthew 17:1-9 The transfiguration is not simply an encouragement on our journey, but the very revelation of Him who precedes us in glory. The disciples of Jesus cannot put up a tent. The disciple must follow the suffering servant along the way of the cross.

PLEASE PRAY for Tom Downey, Doug Johnson, Susan

Maiello, Anne Sharpe, Dickie Smith, and all the sick.

“The bed of the sick is an altar of sacrifice.” St. Francis de Sales

When you call to add a name to our prayer list, please leave your name and number as a contact and let us know what the illness is. Before calling, please be sure that you have spoken to the person or a member of the family about adding their name—we do not want to inadvertently disregard someone's desire for privacy.

Names of those who are sick or injured will be kept on the list for three weeks unless you specifically request a shorter period of time or call to ask that the name be removed.

Names new this week are in boldface type.

SAINT ALPHONSUS LIGOURI

FEAST DAY AUGUST 1 He was born Alphonsus Marie Antony John Cosmos Damien Michael Gaspard de Liguori on September

27,1696, at Marianella, near Naples, Italy. Raised in a pious home, Alphonsus went on retreats with his father, Don Joseph, who was a naval officer and a captain of the Royal Galleys. Alphonsus was the oldest of seven children, raised by a devout mother of Spanish descent. Educated at the University of Naples, Alphonsus received his doctorate at the age of

sixteen. By age nineteen he was practicing law, but he saw the transitory nature of the secular world, and after a brief time, retreated from the law courts and his fame. Visiting the local Hospital for Incurables on August 28, 1723, he had a vision and was told to consecrate his life solely to God. In response, Alphonsus dedicated himself to the religious life, even while suffering persecution from his family. He finally agreed to become a priest but to live at home as a member of a group of secular missionaries. He was ordained on December 21, 1726, and he spent six years giving missions throughout Naples. In April 1729, Alphonsus went to live at the "Chiflese College," founded in Naples by Father Matthew Ripa, the Apostle of China. There he met Bishop Thomas Falcoia, founder of the Congregation of Pious Workers. This lifelong friendship aided Alphonsus, as did his association with a mystic, Sister Mary Celeste. With their aid, Aiphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer on November 9, 1732. The foundation faced immediate problems, and after just one year, Alphonsus found himself with only one lay brother, his other companions having left to form their own religious group. He started again, recruited new members, and in 1743 became the prior of two new congregations, one for men and one for women. Pope Benedict XIV gave his approval for the men's congregation in 1749 and for the women's in 1750. Alphonsus was preaching missions in the rural areas and writing. He refused to become the bishop of Palermo but in 1762 had to accept the papal command to accept the see of St. Agatha of the Goths near Naples. Here he discovered more than thirty thousand uninstructed men and women and four hundred indifferent priests. For thirteen years Alphonsus fed the poor, instructed families, reorganized the seminary and religious houses, taught theology, and wrote. His austerities were rigorous, and he suffered daily the pain from rheumatism that was beginning to deform his body. He spent several years having to drink from tubes because his head was so bent forward. An attack of rheumatic fever, from May 1768 to June 1769, left him paralyzed. He was not allowed to resign his see, however, until 1775. In 1780, Alphonsus was tricked into signing a submission for royal approval of his congregation. This submission altered the original rule, and as a result Alphonsus was denied any authority among the Redemptorists. Deposed and excluded from his own congregation, Alphonsus suffered great anguish. But he

“….the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44

Parish Information

PRAY FOR A PRIEST DAILY We

continue our daily prayers for the priests in the Arlington Diocese by praying this week for:

July 31 Reverend Paul M. Eversole August 1 Reverend Joseph W. Farrell August 2 Reverend Jerome W. Fasano August 3 Reverend Thomas P. Ferguson August 4 Reverend Donald M. Fest, S.S.J. August 5 Reverend Kevin J. Fimian August 6 Reverend Lewis S. Fiorelli, O.S.F.S.

overcame his depression, and he experienced visions, performed miracles, and gave prophecies. He died peacefully on August 1,1787, at Nocera di Pagani, near Naples as the Angelus was ringing. He was beatified in 1816 and canonized in 1839. In 1871, Alphonsus was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX. His writings on moral, theological, and ascetic matters had great impact and have survived through the years, especially his Moral Theology and his Glories of Mary. He was buried at the monastery of the Pagani near Naples. Shrines were built there and at St. Agatha of the Goths. He is the patron of confessors, moral theologians, and the lay apostolate. In liturgical art he is depicted as bent over with rheumatism or as a young priest.

Anointing of the Sick

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The weekend of August 20 we will be celebrating the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the 11:30am, 1:30pm and 5:00pm Masses. The Sacrament of the Anointing is a sacrament of preparation, of consolation, of compassion, of inner healing. Through this anointing the Lord wants to strengthen the sick, to redeem their sufferings and to prepare them for the final resurrection. Sometimes this sacrament may lead to physical healing, but if not, the sick are still strengthened in Christ.

Through the Anointing of the Sick, Christ comforts and strengthens those who are seriously ill due to sickness, injury, or old age. The Holy Spirit strengthens the sick person to deal with the difficulties of his or her illness. The sick person is united more closely to Christ's passion, so that the sufferings borne take on new meaning. And, for those who are approaching death, the Anointing prepares them for this final journey. The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude.

After the Homily during the Anointing of the Sick Masses that weekend, we will invoke the compassion of Christ the Healer upon members of our community who are seriously diminished by age or acute or chronic illness or who face imminent hospitalization or surgery. People seeking the grace of the Sacrament of Anointing will be invited forward (or, if unable, we will go to them), and we will anoint their foreheads and the palms of their hands with the Oil of the Sick, blessed by our bishop at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday this year. As a community, we will pray for them and ask God to grant them healing of mind, body, and soul according to God's will. Please plan to come to one of these Masses should you wish to receive this powerful sacrament.

REMINDERS FOR THIS WEEKEND: Brown Bag The Cornerstones van is in the parking

lot all weekend. There is still time to donate non-perishable items for those in need.

Newcomers’ Tour Meet us at the Welcome Desk to join the tour of our facility, which will begin at about 10:30am. All are welcome, including children.

HAVE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENED! Are you aware that high blood pressure (HBP) is a serious condition leading to coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and other major health problems? About 1 in 3 adults in the United States has HBP. The condition usually has no signs or symptoms; you can have it for years without knowing it. During this time, HBP can damage your heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body.

Knowing your blood pressure numbers is important, even when you’re feeling fine. If your blood pressure is normal, you can work with your health care team to keep it that way. If your blood pressure is too high, treatment may help prevent damage to your body's organs.

Parish nurses will be taking blood pressure readings on Sunday, August 13 between 2:30 - 3:30pm. Counselors will be available to offer guidance on changes in diet and behavior that can help you to better control your blood pressure, or to help you assess whether or not you need medical treatment. Documentation on how to reduce and control your blood pressure will be available at the screening.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ANNOUNCES

FAMILY OF THE MONTH Congratulations to the

Seo Family for being selected as the Council's Family of the Month for July. John joined the Knights of Columbus in 2007 while at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He became a full Knight (3

rd Degree) in 2016. His wife Jaehee, and their

son Stephan and daughter Yura, have been active members of our parish since moving to Oak Hill in the summer of 2011. John has been an active catechist and taught 7

th grade as part of the Faith Formation program.

Yura serves as an usher for the Sunday 5:00pm Mass and has played cello at other Masses.

John is one of the unsung heroes of the Knights’ Charity Breakfasts. He can often be found setting up tables and chairs, cooking, serving food, and taking care of many of the small but necessary tasks to ensure the event is always a success. Many thanks to John for all of his hard work!

A LETTER TO THE PARISH FROM

CATHOLIC CHARITIES “As you may know,

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington operates a Car Ministry program called Cars for Families, whereby we gratefully accept donated cars in good running condition and provide them directly to families in need. Last year, Cars for Families gave out 56 cars thanks to the generosity of many gracious donors. We feel that thanking donors in the bulletin is a good way not only to acknowledge donor generosity but also to bring awareness of the program to other parishioners.

Recently, Amy Conher donated a car to Cars for Families. We asked if she would allow us to contact the parish about thanking her publically in the parish bulletin. While she agreed, she indicated that she is not a member of St. John Neumann but heard about the program through the parish. Her signed agreement is attached.

Catholic Charities not only gratefully acknowledges Ms. Conher’s donation, but also would like to apprise your pastor that having program materials or bulletin information available was instrumental in informing her about this ministry. We feel it is important to let him know that his support has borne fruit: this is now the second donation from St. John Neumann in just four months!

Again, Catholic Charities accepts used cars in good running condition and gives them directly to families in desperate need of transportation. We also accept non-working or unwanted vehicles to fund our many volunteer programs. If you or your pastor have any questions or concerns about the program, information is available on the CCDA website, or please email [email protected] or 703-841-3898.” From the St. John Neumann community to Amy Conher, thank you for making this donation. We hope that parishioners will consider this option when purchasing a newer vehicle.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “We know that all

things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” ROMANS 8:28

Do you really trust God? Do you believe that all things work for good? Faith is a challenge for everyone at times. Putting our trust in God, in everything we do, means that God’s plan for our lives may be different than our plan. When one door closes, another one opens. Trust in God, His plan is always better.
