Advent is a Latin word meaning the coming or arrival. The

season of Advent is a time to prepare to celebrate the

three arrivals of Christ: his lowly birth in the past, his

mysterious coming to the Christian community in the

present, and his promised return as our judge at the end

of time.

Since Advent looks forward to Christ’s incarnation and

birth, it is an appropriate way to begin the church year.

However, Advent is not part of the Christmas season

itself, but a preparation for it. Thus, Catholics do not sing

Christmas hymns or use Christmas readings in the Mass

until December 25, the first day of the Christmas season.

Faith Moment Reflection

Shout for joy! Sing joyfully! Rejoice! Be filled with

expectation! The readings today are filled with joy. And

they tell us that we should be, too. Because the Lord is

near. For Christians, this is a season of happiness. But

the scriptures are describing an unimaginable joy that

surpasses our understanding. They tell us God sings

joyfully because of us, His children. And He wants every

one of us to share in that joy. In the life and example of

Jesus Christ, He shows us how. We share in God's joy

when we give to others, when we feed the hungry, visit

the lonely, comfort the sick, and tend to those in need.

God's joy, peace and love are not limited to one season.

They are timeless and eternal gifts to be shared every day

of our lives. Let’s follow the example of Jesus and bring

joy to the world.

Jesus’s first miracle takes place at the wedding feast

of Cana. Jesus changes water into wine – He changes

the ordinary into the extraordinary. Every marriage,

whether months or 45 plus years, can go from ordinary to

extraordinary. For a free packet filled with prayers,

articles, and resources to enrich your marriage, contact

the Office of Family Life Ministries at 716-847-2210 or

email [email protected].

Marriage Moment. “Rejoice in the Lord always…the Lord

is near.” (Philippians 4:4-5) Sometimes pressure

preparing for Christmas can blind us to what’s really

important. Start by remembering that Christ lives in your

beloved. Pause. Take time to rejoice in each other today.

Parenting Perspective. As your family prepares

Christmas gifts for each other, this is a good time to

discuss with your child how to share their older but still

good toys, clothes, etc. with each other or to donate them

for others who don’t have any. “Whoever has two cloaks

should share with the person who has none.” (Luke 3-11)
