Feast Day of St. Romanos (Melodos) 510

On October 1st, we honor Orthodoxy's greatest hymnographer (one who composes hymns). St. Romanos was born in Emesa, Syria during the latter part of the fifth century and served for many years as deacon of the Orthodox Cathedral of Beirut, Lebanon. St. Romanos was a devout clergyman who served the early Christian Church with great zeal. Unfortunately, St. Romanos was not gifted with a melodious voice. In fact, he was what we all call a "monotone" who was constantly picked on by the people with whom he worked. St. Romanos found it extremely difficult to chant the simplest of hymns. He was very sad over the fact that God hand not granted him a beautiful voice. In the year 486, St. Romanos was sent to Constantinople by his superiors, and he served as deacon of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Cyprus. He served the Church of Constantinople with great piety and zeal. Everyone praised him for his devotion to the Christian Faith. St. Romanos would spend endless hours trying to improve the quality of his voice, but to no avail. One evening as he earnestly prayed for divine assistance, he fell into a deep sleep. The Bless Virgin Mary appeared to him in a vision and told him not to despair. She blessed him with her right hand, and in her left hand she held a short scroll which she gave to St. Romanos. St. Romanos immediately awoke from his dream. He just stood there and cried "What a beautiful vision!" St. Romanos, overcome with joy went up into the pulpit of the Church of the Blessed Mary that very same evening and began to chant a hymn which the Church now calls the Kontakion (an abbreviated hymn). St. Romanos' voice was sweet and melodious and the harmonious chant echoed through the Church grounds. Hundreds of monks left their little cells which surrounded the Church and came to hear the most beautiful of hymns. Actually, it was the hymn of Christmas. Everyone was indeed pleasantly surprised to see none other than St. Romanos (the deacon with the unpleasant voice) chanting the hymn with a magnificent and resounding voice. It was truly a miracle. The entire city soon learned of this strange but beautiful event. St. Romanos composed over 1000 beautiful hymns of which at least 100 are found in the many worship services of our Faith. For years he sang and chanted beautiful hymns for the glory of God. Thousands of the faithful came each day to hear his wonderful voice. St. Romanos died a natural death. His final breath on the is earth was spent in chanting that first hymn he chanted on that night the Blessed Virgin Mary came to him in a dream, his beautiful and classic Christmas hymn:

"The Virgin today brings for the all-powerful, and the earth offers a cave to the Unapproachable. Angels give glory with shepherds, and the Magi journey with the Star, when for our sakes was born as a young Child, He who is from eternity God."

St. Romanos is now referred to as "The Melodious one." Thus he was given the title of St. Romanos the Melodist. St. Romanos is indeed our Church's greatest and most famous hymnographer. He died on October 1st in the year of our Lord 510 A.D
