TUESDAY MORNINGS

THIS SUNDAY’S GOSPEL READING The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven, ” and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” JOHN 6: 41-51

Presentations, to and from

On last Sunday 2 August, there were a sizeable number of students and their families at the 10 am Mass in St John Bosco Church. It was not the third Sunday of the month, which is the usual Parish/School Family Mass. It was for a presentation to the Parish, and a presentation from the Parish. Firstly, the Sacraments candidates from St John Bosco School, Tenison Woods Catholic School, and the parish, were presented to the parish community. These children are preparing for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist (First Holy Communion). Mrs Susan Steer and Mrs Mia Harms are leading the program this term for these Sacraments. The Parish is grateful for their expertise and dedication. Secondly, the Parish presented two Year 7 students with a letter and a small gift to acknowledge that they are the recipients of the Salesian Sisters Memorial Scholarship. As we reported at the end of Term 2, the committee found it difficult to choose one recipient this year. So they decided that the best thing was to award the scholarship to two students. This points to the high quality of some of the applications. The recipients for 2015 are Anthony C and Vianca D. Congratulations to Anthony and Vianca, and their families, and thank you to all those who applied. Mrs Eva Cooper, a co-chair of our Parish Pastoral Council, made the presentation and Mr Paul Murphy announced the names and expressed the School’s appreciation to the Parish. The Parish expects to offer the scholarship again. More details will be come later in the year. God bless you all, Fr Joseph Lee SDB, PP

RESPONDING TO THE SATISFACTION SURVEY COMMENTS

Thank you for the comments received in the Survey. Each week I would like to respond to some of the comments received so parents have a more complete picture of what is happening in our school.

Parent feedback: “I have not seen any recognition or acknowledgement of our indigenous heritage.”

Response:

Our Indigenous culture is important to us. At each Assembly we acknowledge our culture with

this statement to begin proceedings:

We would like to acknowledge this land that we meet on today is the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and that we respect their spiritual relationship with the country. We also

acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage

beliefs are still important to the living Kaurna people today.

We use this statement at all staff meetings and formal gatherings of our school including our SRC Meetings.

Recently we have designed and purchased a plaque to place at the school entrance on a rock to present this

acknowledgement as people enter the school. We are awaiting a quote for a suitable rock. Our SRC group are

helping to plan an Indigenous garden just near the electrical box at the front of the school. All our classes

have the Kaurna acknowledgement in poster form and this poster is in other areas of our school too. Classes

learn about the Indigenous culture as part of their learning program. Class Newsletters will outline the topics

at some point in a year's program. The Australian Curriculum has a indigenous perspective in all learning

areas through the cross curricular priorities. We have had indigenous visitors to our school to support culture

contact. Acknowledgement of our indigenous culture is a valued part of our school. Paul Murphy

SPORT NEWS SOCCER RESULTS - SATURDAY 1ST AUGUST

Under 8 SJB Gold 2 - Richmond 3 We played very well seeing as we were one player short. Despite the rain and mud, all players dribbled the ball really well and kept running the whole game. The passing also continues to improve each week. It was great to see our team encouraging each other, even when a goal was scored against them. This helped them come back when they were 0-2 down. A great team effort. Goal Scorer: Cooper 2 goals Clinton Cenko Under 10 SJB 8 def Seaton Park 0 The team persevered through the rain with a great team effort! Respect Understanding Affirmation Happiness

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St John Bosco School,

We had a wonderful week of swimming lessons last week. Our students really entered into the learning

and demonstrated fantastic improvement and interest. We were very proud of our students. They were

complimented on behaviour and attention by the Instructors. The program is extremely well organised

and offers a balance of swimming skill development and water safety knowledge. We hope parents will

continue their own private lessons to ensure their children are safe and confident swimmers. I also

recommend the VAC SWIM program in January, a very affordable two week program at the beach or at

most local pools, also a great program of learning. Thanks to our staff for their management of the week.

Our shared efforts to reinforce the importance of on time arrival at school and the valuing of learning by

consistent school attendance has demonstrated improvement in recent days. Students are being

challenged about being late and students away from school for unexplained reasons will also be

challenged. We need to change the attitude that its ok to be late and that it is ok to have time off from

learning at school.

The school APP has gained immediate interest and enthusiasm. The technology available is really

fantastic from the days of smoke signals (!) to now the days of alerts right to our hands. Amazing. We

encourage you to download the APP and connect with what is happening. The website is also important

along with getting involved in school activities and events so you know what is happening in your child's

learning and in your child's learning community. We do needs parents to connect in with their school.

You will note in the Bulletin in the next weeks some responses from me in regards to the recent

Satisfaction Survey data. I do think a number of comments need addressing to ensure the facts are very

clear.

I am starting to plan for next year which is our usual process. There is always much to consider. I ask

parents who have any learning concerns to talk with their child’s teacher in the next weeks as we begin

to plan classes. Please do not make requests about friendships and teacher choices as we consider a

range of factors in class design including gender balance, learning needs and social needs. Students are

involved in the process through a friendship survey. Teachers use their extensive professional knowledge

to make good decisions about class groups. I need parents to note that I will not be considering any

requests beyond these next weeks. It is very unfair to place demands upon us at end of year. If you are

worried about anything please talk to your child’s class teacher. May I reassure that we do place much

effort into making good decisions for our students placements.

See you at our Pasta and Pizza Night.

Paul
