Notes from the Pastor

What the Church Teaches: Immigration

What is a “guest worker” program? Won’t such a program only encourage more illegal immigration? The U.S. bishops support a program which protects the rights of both U.S. and foreign-born workers. It allows both American and foreign-born workers the opportunity to assert their rights in the work place. A “guest worker” program would provide tempo-rary visas for migrant workers to come and work in specific industries like agriculture, service and con-struction. The status quo makes illegal immigration necessary because there are no other ways for those who wish to come here to work. Creating legal ave-nues for migration should reduce illegal immigra-tion flow. One of the congressional proposals would punish those who give assistance to illegal immigrants. There is some debate as to whether that would in-clude humanitarian aid, such as that offered by many Catholic organizations. What is the truth about that part of the proposal? House bill H.R. 4437 contains a provision which would make it a crime for a person to “assist” an undocumented person “knowingly or with reckless regard as to whether they are undocumented.” The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops believes that this provision could place church programs and church personnel at risk of criminal prosecution for basically being a “Good Samaritan.” Current law does not require social service programs like those run by the Catholic Church to ask for legal permis-sion before providing service. At the same time, it shouldn’t. Love of God and love of neighbor have become one: in the least of the brethren we find Jesus Him-self, and in Jesus we find God. -Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est Adapted by Our Sunday Visitor By Our Sunday Visitor by Most Reverend Thomas Wenski

God’s Grace is Enough

Our world is very challenging and ever changing. We are faced with so many events which tear at the very fabric of our hearts and souls. School shootings, terror attacks, natural disasters, abortion, euthanasia, suicides, addictions, kidnappings and the list goes on and on. We like the disciples might ask our Lord, “increase our faith?” A plea to increase our faith to rise above all these tragedies of our generation would be understandable.

Jesus reassures us, “If you had the faith of a mustard seed you would say to this mulberry tree, be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you.” We know this to be true. Those heros of our generation who step into the breech to protect the children, comfort the frightened, feed and house the homeless, free the prisoners, provide hope for the hopeless, know that the miracle of the mustard seed empowered by God’s grace working through us changes lives... and provides an unquenchable light in the darkness. We know that God’s grace is always at work and we are blessed to be part of it. We know it is His grace that flows from the cross, and from the Eucharist He shares with us.

A man named Dennis Zulu was born in South Africa and grew up during the apartheid. They were not allowed to own a bible for fear of misinterpretation of scripture. His senior year in high school, he came across a church and sat in the pew and started reading some of the books there. One in particular drew his attention, “Chosen by God.” He didn’t understand some of its content but wanted to learn more about this irresistible grace it talked about. The journey changed his life. He came to know the miracle of the cross. He tells of his faith in Christ and how that this faith keeps him going and that he couldn’t survive without it. How he knows in his heart that this grace he received through faith has given him and continues to give him the courage to love his neighbor, his family and especially God. He proclaims it so well:

“My name is Dennis Zulu. I was born in South Africa. I am saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, for the glory of God alone. And I was born for such a time as this.”

Perhaps we were too!

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time; Respect Life Sunday Monday: Our Lady of the Rosary Tuesday: Yom Kippur (Jewish Day of Atonement) begins at sundown Wednesday: St. Denis and Companions; St. John Leonardi Friday: St. John XXIII Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes human relationships go awry, but Christ’s choice for us is irrevocable. In marriage celebrations, the Church always recalls God’s faith-fulness to help prepare married couples for enduring the inevitable rough spots. The Byzantine liturgy does this by adorning the couple with crowns that remind them of the martyr’s crown. The couple therefore takes on a vocation of witnessing to the sacredness of life in all of its suffering and joy, and of keeping their eyes fixed on the banquet of heaven. In Eastern theology, people have a liturgical vocation to give God praise, and marriage fits within that plan. It is not so much saying prayers that counts, but becoming prayer. Interestingly, in this liturgy the couple never utters a word other than joining in the community’s chants; there are no marriage vows as such. There is therefore not a hint of our Western Christian sense that marriage is a legal contract. Rather, it is all about living out one’s baptismal vocation, embracing the cross, pouring oneself out in love, and opening to the grace of the Holy Spirit. —James Field SPEAKING OF GOD Almost everything said of God is unworthy, for the very reason that it is capable of being said. —St. Gregory the Great LIVING A FAITH ’Tis not the dying for a faith that’s so hard—every man of every nation has done that—’tis the living up to it that’s difficult. —William Makepeace Thackeray

A LITTLE FAITH Today our readings are about faith, frustration, and how much is enough. Habakkuk is a complainer having an argument with God. Timothy is encouraging a community challenged by cowardice and the apostles want more faith than they have. Things aren’t happening fast enough for any of them or for us. All of them and we want God to do something sooner rather than later and we want God to give us a reason to believe that it will all work out. What does God do? God puts it back on them—and us—telling Habakkuk to describe the world he wants; telling the apostles to do more than the expected. Doing more with less is a familiar phrase today and a reminder that a little faith may be enough even for the most difficult times.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The just ones, because of their faith, shall live (Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4). Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading — Bear hardship with the strength that comes from God (2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14). Gospel — The apostles said to Jesus, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:5-10). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Jon 1:1 — 2:2, 11; Jon 2:3-5, 8; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 130:1b-4ab, 7-8; Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Jon 4:1-11; Ps 86:3-6, 9-10; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Mal 3:13-20b; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Jl 1:13-15; 2:1-2; Ps 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Jl 4:12-21; Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: 2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19
