Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family - The Journey of our Faith“Our soul waits for the Lord, who is our help and our shield. May your kindness,

O Lord, be upon us who have put our hope in you." Salmo 33: 20, 22

Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family - The Journey of our Faith

August 11, 2019 - Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time“Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” Heb 11:1

Breaking Open the Word – 19th Sunday in Ordinary TimeReadings: Wisdom 18:6-9 • Psalm 33:1, 12, 18-22 • Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 • Luke 12:32-48

OVERVIEW: The Wisdom of Solomon was written in the latter part of the first century B.C., probably in Alexandria, Egypt. It was composed by a Greek speaking Jew to preserve the memory of how God had guided his people in their long, difficult journey through history, and how he continues to guide them by His Wisdom. The author recalls “our fathers,” meaning the patriarchs. Chief among them was Abraham who was promised by God that his descendants would become a great nation (Gen. 12:2). The remembrance of God’s promises each Passover reaffirmed the “oath” sworn by God and Abraham, which established the covenant. By renewing their pledge of fidelity, the Jews of Alexandria were encouraged to live out their faith in a non-Jewish society. Hebrews 11 is sometimes called the “roll call of the heroes of faith.” But that’s not quite right, for heroes are known for their achievements while the individuals listed in this chapter are known for their faith. In this week’s second reading Abraham is celebrated as a prime example of faith. At pivotal moments in salvation history, ordinary individuals like Abraham were called to extraordinary tasks that tested their faith. The “oath” that Abraham swore gave him the strength to persevere when his faith was challenged. In this week’s gospel Jesus calls his disciples to vigilance, courage and always being ready for the Lord who will come “at an hour you do not expect.” The Gospel is related to the first reading when Jesus says. “Gird your loins and light your lamps”, which is an allusion to the Exodus and the yearly celebration of the Passover. While this reading is usually understood in terms of the Second Coming, it is relevant to the Mass, which also requires preparation on our part, as well as attentiveness. We “keep our lamps lit” that is to say, we must not only stay awake during Mass (!) we must be spiritually alert and ready at all times “as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ.” In the Mass, we renew our own baptismal covenant and confirm the oath that Abraham swore.

Key verse: “The night of the Passover was known beforehand to our fathers, that, with sure knowledge of the oaths in which they put their faith, they might have courage.” (Wisdom 18:6)

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: "The second commandment forbids false oaths. Taking an oath or swearing is to take God as witness to what one affirms. It is to invoke the divine truthfulness as a pledge of one's own truthfulness.” [no. 2150]

POPE FRANCIS: "Jesus’ invitation is to never be ashamed of him but to follow him always with total dedication, trusting in him and entrusting oneself to him.” [Homily, July 31, 2013]

LIFE APPLICATION: The simple act of going to church on Sunday is no small thing. It is a courageous act, not unlike that first Passover when the actions of the Jews, which were liturgical actions, threatened the status quo and challenged the authority of Pharaoh. One of the liturgical requirements of the Passover was to stay awake and keep watch through the night (Ex. 12:42; see also Mt. 26:38, 41). There’s always the danger that Mass becomes so routine we practically sleep walk through it. It’s important that we are always alert, spiritually. Keeping the Sabbath day holy and celebrating the Holy Eucharist requires holy vigilance. We must always be ready to follow the Lord whenever he calls, and wherever he leads us. Each Sunday we renew our baptismal promises and pledge our fidelity to Christ the Lord. By doing so, we gain confidence and courage to follow Christ and profess our faith in an increasingly unbelieving and sometimes hostile world.

URGENT MESSAGE FROM THE DIOCESEIt has come to our attention that a man calling himself "Fr. Manuel" or "Frey Manuel" is in the area providing "sacraments" of baptism, first Holy Communion and Quinceañeras for people in secular facilities or people's homes. Be advised he is NOT a Catholic priest and does not have faculties to administer the sacraments. Therefore, this makes the "sacraments" he administers canonically illicit, should not be registered in parish registers and should not be recognized as Catholic sacraments.

WELCOME TO HOLY FAMILY REVEREND FR. TRISTAN!

REVEREND TRISTAN JASPER DIÑO LAFORTEZA is a Filipino priest of Diocese of Novaliches, Manila. He recently ended his assignment for six years as Pastor of Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Caloocan City. He has been a priest for seven years. He was born on January 23, 1985 in Gapan, Nueva Ecija with his loving parents Engr. Edgardo C. Laforteza and Mrs. Arlene D. Laforteza. He is the eldest among Eric, who helps in their family business and Ia, who works as an architect. They live at Jordan Plains Subdivision, Novaliches, Quezon City.

Way back 1997, Rev. Tristan entered Maria Assumpta Seminary in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, at the age of 12, where he finished High School. After which, he pursued his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy in the same seminary which he completed in 2005. Succeeding, Rev. Tristan enrolled in San Carlos Major Seminary in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati, where he earned his master’s degree in Sacred Theology in 2010. He was ordained Deacon on August 19, 2010, and became a priest on September 23, 2011, in the Solemn Feast of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina.

Upon ordination, he worked as an Assistant Pastor of Sta. Lucia Parish, Quezon City. After a couple of months, he transferred to the Cathedral Shrine of the Good Shepherd, Quezon City where he continued his work as an Assistant Pastor. Indeed, it was good training for him to prepare himself in handling a major responsibility as a pastor soon. Two years after, he was appointed as Parish Priest of Mother of Perpetual Help.

By God’s grace, Rev. Tristan had meaningful and heartfelt experiences in doing faithfully his functions as a Pastor. However, in his deepest desire to serve the Catholic Church more holistically and passionately, Rev. Tristan wanted to broaden his perspective on the different facets of the Catholic Church by learning other cultures and diverse practices that are preciously relevant in his ministry. Thus, it is on this spirit that Rev. Tristan decided to seek an assignment at the Diocese of Sacramento. Currently, he serves as an Assistant Pastor of Holy Family Parish, Old Auburn Road, Citrus Heights, CA. 95610.

Rev. Tristan loves to share the words of St. Jean Marie Vianney, the Patron Saint of all the priests, “The priest is not a priest for himself - he is for you. After God, the priest is everything.”

LIVING THE GOSPEL OF LIFE

A Perfect Gift Read the full version at usccb.org/perfect-gift.

Soon after the birth of my son Charlie,* who has Down syndrome, a visitor asked whether he was “mild, moderate, or severe”—referring to his level of cognitive impairment. I was shocked. In my arms I held my beautiful baby boy, who defied easy categorization.

It’s like looking at stained glass from the outside: the colors look dark, and you can’t see the figures. But inside, with the sun shining through, the effect can be brilliant.

From inside our family, love illuminates our life with Charlie. What may seem dreary to others, perhaps even unbearable, is actually filled with beauty and color. Our love has nothing to do with his abilities. We love him simply because of who he is, and understanding this teaches us a fundamental truth: every life is a good and perfect gift.

Maria,* Vanessa, Li, Jennifer, and Darryl are among the tens of millions of Americans whose lives have been directly touched by abortion. Like so many others, they have experienced regret, guilt, and grief. But, as they have also experienced, God’s healing love and mercy are always possible.

Many Catholics want to help women and men who have experienced abortion, but some don’t know how to begin. Visit usccb.org/bridges-of -mercy to learn how people from various walks of life can assist friends, family members, fellow parishioners, clients—or perhaps even themselves.

“Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield.May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you." Psalm 33:20, 22

Almost two years ago – as we began our parish pledge drive to raise the needed funds for our renovation project – there seemed to be a sense of confusion and concern within the parish community. It looks as if there remains some confusion about our Legacy Fund. We understand that there has been an idea within our community that there are two Legacy Funds: one for covering the expense of major repairs, such as reroofing the community center, and another fund for the renovation of the church. This is not the case whch has unfortunately created a great deal of confusion. We have one Legacy Fund which was originally started to retire the debt of our community center and has been continued to cover the expense of major repairs and maintenance so that we wouldn’t need to have a “Capital Campaign” to cover those expenses. The question then arises, if that is the function of the Legacy Fund, then why are we having a “Campaign” to raise funds for “Legacy?”

We have come to the point in the aging of our church, that many of us reach in the aging of our homes. As our homes age, we often decide to remodel the bathrooms, or the kitchen, or maybe even the whole house, because we now have the ability to improve upon what was built 40 or 50 years ago. Electrical wiring is better today than it was 50 years ago as are lighting, plumbing, HVAC and many other things.

In 1965 the community of Holy Family built a beautiful church. Today that church is showing its age, and many very invasive and expensive repairs are needed. A few years ago, after the 6:00 p.m. mass, a couple of slabs of marble fell off the back of the altar. It was a blessing that our altar servers were not standing there when it happened as they could have been seriously injured.

In 1965, the slabs of marble were attached to concrete cinder blocks using plaster of paris. Today we have better materials available for attaching the marble to the concrete block and, we know that several pieces of marble are starting to show indication of delamination. This is only one of many major repairs that our church needs. That is why we have undertaken the challenge of the pledge drive. Our sanctuary continues to present us with challenges. Last week, Deacon Mark Holt’s wife, Nilda, was serving as the sacristan for the Thursday morning mass, she misjudged the steps as she was coming down from the altar and fell, breaking her left shoulder.

The needed repairs and improvements will be extensive and expensive. As we may remodel our homes to improve various aspects of our house to make it more attractive and efficient, we do the same for our church, and now is the time to remodel, to make it more attractive, more efficient, and safer for everyone.

As we continue to move forward with our parish renovation project, we continue to meet with architects concerning the scope of the project and a visual rendering of Fr. Enrique’s vision of a renewed and revitalized church – a vision that reflects our hope, our joy, and most importantly the depth of our faith and our resolve to pass the fullness and the beauty of that faith on to future generations.

It is with sincere gratitude that we thank you for your kindness, your patience and understanding, and most importantly, thank you for your great generosity, your support and your prayers.

Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family The Journey of our Faith
