THIS WEEK AT ST. JEROME…… Sunday 2/2 REACH Grade 1-8—9:15 Mass then class Monday 2/3 Women’s Scripture 9:30 AM Tuesday 2/4 Wednesday 2/5 Women’s Scripture 7:30 PM Thursday 2/6 Friday 2/7 Saturday 2/8 Men’s Group 7:00 AM Sunday 2/9 REACH Grade 1-8—9:15 Mass then class TOTAL

On Sunday afternoon I awoke from a nap, (remember I am retired), to hear about the death of Kobe Bryant. I knew who he was and even that he played for the LAKERS, but so limited was my knowledge that I didn’t even know he had retired. The media re-sponse was impressive, and I thought, how sad that a life was cut short. Hours later I learned both that his daughter had died, and that his death had deeply saddened many. I also that heard, for the first time, that he was a great father with a skeleton in his clos-et.

What most struck me was the widespread sadness at his death. This was a man who meant much to many. In our polarized days that hardly ever happens. It also struck me that we do not have public heroes anymore, people who are universally admired for their virtue. Granted both John McCain and Elijah Cummings were both highly admired, despite their political differences, but that kind of general praise is rare. How sad.

When, however, you turn to our locality you see hundreds if not thousands of people who, when they die, are honored, admired and put up as role models. Any priest sees such people every month of the year. Here in Norwalk, police officer Cesar Ramirez was buried from St. Matthew Church in a gigantic funeral, where his goodness and ded-ication were celebrated by those who knew him. In Norwalk, his death was a big deal. At St. Jerome we had the funeral for Mary Helen Burk, who was greatly involved in the purchase of Sheffield Island for the public good. Our Church was packed as well, and her praises were sung. The world is filled with people who go around being light to the world and a blessing to their communities.

We have a need for more Saints! Maybe the Diocese could start a project to identify the saints (with a small s) who are in our midst. We have many at St. Jerome as does any parish. The danger, of course, in such a list is that some saints might be missed. But, if they are really saints they would not complain about being overlooked, a sure sign of sanctity.

TWEETS OF THE WEEK

@Pontifex “God’s word consoles and encourages us, it challenges us, frees us from the bondage of our selfish-

ness and summons us to conversion; because it has power to change our lives and to lead us out of darkness into the light.” @CardinalDolan In last Sunday’s gospel, “Jesus called His first followers. We usually think of a call, or vocation, from Jesus as one to the sacra-ment of Holy Orders or consecrated religious life, but Jesus calls each of us to lead the life that will lead us back to Him.” @JimSichko “Celebrate other people’s victories. Let their successes inspire you. If God did some-thing so wonderful for them, He can/will do it for you.” @JamesMartin,SJ “Gospel: 1/26 There have al-ways been , and always will be divisions in the church. So what kept the often fractious disciples together? Jesus. They trusted Jesus called them for a reason. Thinking, “I wouldn't have called him or her, but Jesus did.”

There is a simple, convenient way for you to get preventive health screenings and learn your risk for stroke, heart disease and other chronic condi-tions. These painless screenings go beyond your regu-lar checkup to identify dangerous plaque buildup or blockage, a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease. The screenings are accurate, af-fordable and will give you valuable information about your health that you can share with your doctor.

We are pleased to host Life Line Screening, who will be on site on 2/19/2020 at St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church to conduct these valuable screenings. These 5 vital screenings are offered for only $149 and take 60-90 minutes to complete. If you regis-ter today, you will receive a $10 discount. Register by calling toll free 1-888-653-6441, visit www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle, or text the word "circle" to 797979.
