Brothers and Sisters, This coming Sunday, July 25-26, we will celebrate our patronal feast of the parish,

St. James the Greater. He was given the title "Greater" due to the fact that there was

another Apostle, also named James (who is referred to as St. James the Lesser). The

reason for who received what title, "Greater" or "Lesser" is not too well known. Some

historians suggest these titles might come from the height of the two Apostles, that

one was taller than the other, and so they used these qualifications to distinguish

the two Apostles sharing the same name. These added titles of Lesser and Greater

should not be the focus for us too much, but rather the elements of his life that help

us live out our discipleship as faithfully as St. James the Greater. First, he faithfully

lived and preached the Gospel. All of us, as Christians, are called to spread the faith

by word and example. Secondly, he gave his life for Christ. There are many times

that we are called to stand up for Christ, and it might make us uncomfortable to do

so. Nevertheless, let us be courageous and bold disciples, so that we might inherit a

share in the same Kingdom he now beholds. Please know of my prayers for all of you.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The current pandemic is far from over, as we are witnessing here and elsewhere a

surge in positive cases. Thankfully most are recovering, but apparently, we are still

a long way from the end of this worldwide health crisis. That is why we must all

continue to do our part to assist in reducing the spread of this potentially deadly virus.

I am asking all of our pastors to continue to implement published (web site) guidelines

– but now with renewed diligence. I ask that everyone follow them as carefully as

possible, especially the importance of social distancing. In those guidelines, as you

may recall, we highly recommended the wearing of masks but did not require them,

leaving that decision to the individual who chose to attend.

On July 2 Governor Kelly issued a state order mandating the wearing of masks or facial

coverings while in public with exceptions for certain individuals. Each county and city

jurisdiction has or will decide how best to implement this state order. It seems wise

and prudent to follow the decisions of these jurisdictions, because each location is

unique in regard to this health crisis.

Having said this, however, I am requesting that beginning on July 11 and until further

notice, the people who choose to come to Mass wear masks, except for those exempt

in the Governor’s order. I believe this is a small act of charity most of us can offer for

the health and wellbeing of others. I also ask our priests and deacons to wear a mask

in the procession and recession and during the distribution of Holy Communion.

Making this request, however, I ask that no one be denied admittance or asked to

leave if they have chosen not to wear a mask. If you can, please wear a mask.

Information from the CDC tells us that doing this, coupled with social distancing and

following other guidelines will help the country and the world eventually emerge from

this crisis.

I join all of you in praying for a speedy end to this health crisis. Together, with God’s

grace and our cooperation with the divine assistance, we will make it through. Until

then and in the meantime, I assure you all of my daily prayers.

I am Humbly Yours in Christ,

+Most Reverend Carl A. Kemme D.D.

Bishop of Wichita

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are

present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things and I

desire You in my soul. Since I can

not now receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my

heart. As though you were already

there, I embrace You and unite

myself wholly to You; permit not

that I should ever be separated

from You.

Amen
