NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Scriptures

The inner word: What’s in your heart? The Letter to the Hebrews offers one of the most el-oquent definitions of faith in scripture: “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” It’s true, isn’t it? So much of faith has to do with believing in the invisible. But there’s more to it. It is also about “realization” and “evidence”—things you can perceive. Though faith does have an unseen, “not here” quality, it’s also very much in the here and now. Where do you “see” faith today? Prepare the Word (©2016), www.PrepareTheWord.com But I didn't know In school, once in a while, it happened. You forgot the assignment was due and had nothing to hand in. Or you were sick on Monday and didn't know about the test on Tuesday. Or a pop quiz was thrown re-garding the very chapter you failed to read. Some-times it wasn't an academic embarrassment, but a social one. On casual Friday in parochial school, when the rest of the class was wearing cool clothes, you showed up in your uniform. Yikes.

Even now, in adulthood, you and I are sometimes caught off guard, unprepared. We space out the mid-week holy day. We neglect to pay the bill on time. We don't allow for traffic and wind up arriving an hour late for dinner. We forget our mother's birth-day.

Being clueless is one thing. But sometimes we know better and still fail to take responsibility for the obli-gations that are ours. As scholar Martin Lang sums it up, what Jesus teaches today pivots on three ideas: suddenness, accountability, and responsibility. Sud-den: because we can't put our death on the calendar for future reference. Accountable: because our lives don't belong to us, we're merely stewards of time, and God alone will judge our stewardship. Responsi-ble: because what we do on this earth, every deci-sion, matters. What we do AND fail to do, as we say

(continued in the next column)

(continued from the previous column)

at every Mass. It won't do us any good to claim we didn't know, we weren't expecting this; that, with more time or a little advance warning, we could have cobbled something together. Too late for that.

So how do we handle the tremendous pressure of being totally responsible to God for every choice we make, with a deadline we can't exactly plan for? Trust in God is the key to getting it right. Jesus says: Don't be afraid to sell your belongings to give alms. Hanging onto stuff is unimportant; helping your sister and brother in need is critical.

Getting ready for death is not the same as getting ready for the opera! It's not about what we do in the final hours before we go, but what we do all along the way. Live like the pop quiz is today. And to-morrow. Treat every interaction with your fellow human beings like it's the last, with all the tender-ness and kind attention you daydream of bestowing on those around your deathbed. If you hope to be a saint one day, be a saint today. If you intend to for-give your sister eventually, forgive her now. If you plan on being generous after you win the lottery, be generous immediately. Christian death is easy. Die to yourself in every minute, and you've got it made.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! Sunday Mass

Do you “have” to go to Mass, or do you “get” to go to Mass every Sunday? Some obligations can feel like both are true, de-pending on our perspective. Like any re-lationship, our relationship with God can have hills and valleys. That’s why there’s really virtue in vigilance—the discipline by which we embrace our relationship with God regardless of whether we “feel” good about it ourselves. We know God desires our friendship—we just have to show up. (2180-2188)

Questions Catholics Ask The Holy Year of Mercy:

Reflections

Sweet mercy is nobility's true badge. — William Shakespeare

Prepare the Word (©2016), www.PrepareTheWord.com

What about heaven and hell? WHOEVER believes Jesus is the Son of God, the gospel says, will have eternal life. Traditionally a lot of “eternal life” has to do with what happens after death, especially the prospects of heaven and hell. So what’s the church’s official word on the subject?

Hell is the “state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1033). That underscores that hell is a deliberate choice; no one falls into it by accident. Hell is real-ized immediately upon death for those who die mortally (fatally) sinful. The irrevocability of this decision is a “call to responsibility” and “to conver-sion” (CCC no. 1035-36) for the living. No one is predestined for condemnation, and it’s not God’s intent that anyone should perish in this way (CCC no. 1037).

What impresses me is that more folks concern themselves with hellish details than seek to learn about heaven. If hell unnerves us, there’s an easy solution: Remain on the path of love. If hell is self-chosen alienation from God, then heaven is self-selected union. God is love, so stick with love and hell becomes literally a dead subject. –Alice L. Camille

Dominican Fathers in Africa August 20/21 Appeal

Dominicans in Africa are currently located in some 25 countries. Our Dominican Province of Nigeria & Ghana is the largest entity on the African continent. We are engaged in a diversity of ministries. Our efforts are very much concentrated in the areas of basic formation and training for the priesthood and religious life; primary evangelization in rural parts of Africa; on-going Christian formation in the faith through parish ministries; ministry among Muslims; social justice ministries, and healthcare delivery; chaplaincies and education ministries at all levels. We are committed to bringing Christ in a relevant way to all the people that we minister unto. In his presentation, our representative will make references to these ministerial engagements of ours. We would greatly appreciate your support and encouragement for a successful appeal.

60th Anniversary of the Latin American Apostolate

“Celebrating Our Past- Committing to Our Future”

On Sunday, August 7th, we will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Latin American Apostolate and a collection will be taken to support the pres-ence of our 4 Saint Louis Priest Missionaries in Bo-livia. Due to great poverty in Bolivia, many people are living in conditions we can barely imagine—without access to clean water, sanitation or foo. The country also continues to suffer from a severe short-age of native Priests. Our St. Louis Priest Mission-aries are critical in helping to proclaim the Gospel, celebrate the Sacraments, form seminarians, and of-fer aid and pastoral care to their parishioners.

Our Missionaries can only do what we make pos-sible through our prayers and sacrifices. Please be generous in the collection for the Latin American Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis on Sunday August 7, 2016. Envelopes in the pews can be dropped in next wee collection basket.
