PRESIDENT'S REPORT Well what a season we have had! The season began in November last year at our AGM. We decided to forego our relationship with the Adelaide Crows and return to the heritage colours of Red & White and be “the Dragons” once again. In my mind there is absolutely no doubt that this has been the right decision. We have benefited by some additional volunteers and some extra sponsorship but probably not to the level that we hoped for. But I believe that this will build in the coming years and I look forward to the growth of our Red & White sub-committee. Within a month our elected President Andrew Cubitt had resigned for personal reasons and I acknowledge his contribution to the club. If I can summarise the state of the club at that stage.

• We had no President,

• we had 4 elected members on the Executive,

• we had no coaches,

• the club was $87,500 in debt with just over $2000 in the bank and

• 23 players of all grades transferred out of the club in the pre-season.

But what we did have was a core group of senior players, a core group of volunteers and we had put in place about a year prior a focus on our juniors. Thanks to John Addison’s work, we were confident that we would get additional players to join our existing Under 18 squad. You will remember that we started the season with a “Back to Red& White” function that was relatively successful in financial terms but really set the Dragon spirit alight. Numbers were good at pre-season training and we confidently set out with 2 senior men’s teams, our Under 18 squad of about 30 players and of course our Women’s team. The firsts and Under 18’s were up and competing well but it was already obvious that the Ressies were in for a long and difficult season. Little did we know that within 5 weeks our first’s coach Brad Pullin would resign for personal reasons. A very big thank you to Shane Demir and Kev Wilsen for stepping up. But the wind was out of our sails and our young firsts side were hammered for the next 5 weeks and dropped out of semi-finals contention. However, the under 18’s in the care of Geoff Axford got better and better. We were confident that they could get to the semis. And so it eventuated. Some statistics for you. During the season, we had:

• 43 players had a game in the firsts 17 of those for the first time.

• 69 different players had a run in Ressies and

• 32 in Under 18’s the majority of whom trained on a regular basis.

So where are we now. • Financially we are $51,000 in debt with $14,000 in the bank

• Our Under 18’s played in the Grand Final

• A large number of players who have played first grade

• Our off field administration is ranked very highly by Sydney AFL

Page 5: St George Australian Football Club Inc

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2009 Annual Report 5

We know that many Under 18’s do not follow through in any sport due to pressure with work, study and life in general. Also over the last few years we have not had the right set-up for Ressies in our club. We intend to rectify that this season. So for this coming season our aim must be to reach the semis with all four sides. Finally I have a number of people to thank and to congratulate. To our 4 inductees into the Hall of Fame. Congratulations and a very big thank you for all your work with the club. To all our volunteers especially those who helped out in any way during the finals series. I am sure we will look back on that as a defining moment in the club’s re-birth. To our sponsors and in particular the St George Masos, the NAB and Danny Dwyer. Without you we would have been in serious trouble. Thank You. We cannot yet see the light at the end of the tunnel but we can now see the mountain the tunnel goes through. To our coaches, trainers, managers and medical staff. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. It is always very dangerous to single out individuals but I am going to do it anyway.

• John Addison, • Bob Sterling, • Richard Orton, • Gavin Bloor, • Gavin Raper, • John Shineberg and • Fran McBride.

Thank you for your help, support and advice. And to all the award winners. Congratulations.

Brendan Donohue President 2009

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The Annual General Meeting of the St George Australian Football Club was held 15 November 2008 at which the Committee for the 2009 season was formally appointed. With the new Committee in place, revisions to the constitution and Club Business Plan were adopted in order to provide the best opportunity to move forward into the new season. It was decided by the Committee that the most appropriate time to meet for monthly meeting would be the first Monday of each month in which minutes were recorded and distributed of all meetings. At the ensuing workshop involving various St George AFC stakeholders many ideas and suggestions were tabled and discussed which provided all involved a great impetus to continue the work down in previous years in returning the club to a position of strength both on and off field. The early appointment of coaches in all three grades allowed a more structured and beneficial pre-season training program which saw great improvements in communication to and from players. This increase in player involvement helped to build a real sense of camaraderie among all players, regardless of age and experience, which continued to be displayed throughout the year. After much discussion and debate at various levels it was decided that for season 2009 the St George Australian Football Club would once again be known as the Dragons with a return to the traditional red and white colours to occur as well. The decision was not taken lightly with all people involved acknowledging that the commitment to return to the Dragons would need to an ongoing one

Page 6: St George Australian Football Club Inc

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2009 Annual Report 6

with sustained effort focussed on off field support including revenue generation. With this decision came the institution of the Red and White Sub-Committee under cause 61 of the Club’s constitution. Mention needs to be made of this sub-committee for their efforts throughout the year in contacting and recruiting many former players, administrators and members back to the Club. This was particularly evident in the attendance of the Return to Red and White pre-season function as well as the Best and Fairest Presentation and Hall of Fame Induction Night. On 2 February, 2009 a letter of resignation was tabled at the Committee meeting from President Andrew Cubitt. This was regrettably accepted by the Committee with special mention made of the service Andrew provided to the Club, particularly as President since 2005. It was agreed that Senior Vice President Brendan Donohue would assume the role of President in a temporary capacity until a suitable candidate could be found. With no candidates coming forth it was unanimously decided that Brendan Donohue would become President, leaving the role of Senior Vice President vacant. After 4 rounds of the competition were completed the Club again was thrown in upheaval with the resignation of Senior Coach Brad Pullin due to family circumstances. With elevation of Shane Demir to Senior Coach and the appointment of Kevin Wilsen as Reserve Grade Coach the club continued on with commitment of the players never wavering, for which they should be commended. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank and congratulate all people involved with the St George Australian Football Club during the 2009 season, a year which has seen us take big steps towards the ultimate goal of success both on and off field. To the volunteers; your selflessness and passion are appreciated by all. To the players; the foundations have been laid upon which sustained success can now be built, all it takes is a bit of hard work. To my fellow committee members; for your ongoing support and hard work I am forever grateful and honoured to have worked along side you. Jon Shineberg Club Secretary

TREASURER'S REPORT

Firstly, I would like to thank the other members of the St George AFC committee for their tireless work during the year. I also wish to thank those that are actively involved in the club but do not hold ‘official’ titles. It is people like Bob Sterling, Richard Orton, Danny Dwyer and Fran McBride that have helped the club through a difficult period. It is only looking back on the year that one begins to appreciate the seriousness of the situation the club found itself in. 2009 was indeed a challenging year and it is pleasing to state we enter 2010 in a much better position. The club still has significant progress to make however I believe the most difficult period is behind us. It is thanks to the work of many people, in particular Brendan Donohue, Gavin Bloor and John Addison, that this progress has been made. Fran McBride deserves much of the credit for the successful running of the canteen. 2009 presented some unique challenges with several games being changed at late notice. This made running the canteen a logistical nightmare and combined with the low crowds from the UTS and Manly games reduced takings considerably. On the positive side the finals series was a significant boost for the club. We were blessed with perfect weather and many volunteers. Fran McBride and Richard Orton are largely responsible for the organization of this financial windfall. In terms of debt repayments 2009 saw significant reduction in the club’s debt from $87,500 to $51,000 and we start 2010 with $14,000 in the bank. We obviously still have some way to go and ridding ourselves of the majority of this debt will be a major goal of 2010.

Page 7: St George Australian Football Club Inc

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2009 Annual Report 7

Thank you to Jo Hinsen who with Richard Orton and John Addison ran a very efficient registration process. The club relies upon this for a significant source of income and 2009 was our most successful year to date. The Dragon’s Draw initiative introduced by Gavin Bloor was another success as were the efforts of the Red & White Committee. Overall if we remove the effect of the finals canteen from our income the club increased revenue from $103,000 to approximately $120,000. Costs also increased due largely to the purchase of new sets of jumpers for all grades. Pressure remains to increase our funding base as NSW AFL fees are expected to rise 5% next year, the club incentive scheme has been scrapped and some of the one-off donations received thanks to the return to red and white will need to be covered from other revenue sources. Broadening the sponsorship base will be another focus in 2010 as we currently rely heavily upon a few major sponsors and contributors and it is pleasing to hear work has already begun in this area. Longer term St George needs to develop an asset or ‘future fund’ which overtime can provide the club with a steady yet growing income source. Thanks again to all those who contributed their time and energy in 2009. As a first time treasurer I learnt a lot from the experience and from the expertise of those on the committee. To conclude, our financial position is not great but it is a great improvement on where it was at the start of the year.

Gavin Raper Treasurer

FOOTBALL MANAGER'S REPORT

Post 2008 season saw our coach along with several senior players leave the club. We knew what we wanted to achieve before this happened, but if we could have been weened off relying heavily on players from outside our junior base a bit slower it would have been a little less traumatic. But it wasn’t the way it was destined to happen so we had to move forward with confidence. Losing appointed Senior Coach Brad Pullin early in the season was another hurdle we had to clear. We still commend Brad for the reasons for his decision. Family is a far more important commitment then coaching a football club. This gave Shane (Shaun) Demir the opportunity to step up to the Senior Coaching position. He was excited by the challenge of player coaching. He handled some very difficult situations admirably. The morale was obviously low after Brad left but Shane remained positive and eager to learn as the season progressed. Shane is very proactive and he gained important people skills as the season progressed. His on ground football contribution was also exceptional under the circumstances. Match day tactics was always going to be the hard part of player/coach, but he was backed by his father Minnie who with his cool head and years of experience helped the boys gain confidence and improve their match skills as the year went on. Thanks to Shane and Minnie for the work they both did for us this year. Shane taking on his new role left the ressies position vacant. I ran the prospect of taking on the job past Kevin Wilsen and the answer was YES! Kevin was never dirty in defeat, but if things were needed to be said at the breaks he would say it. The team would be different week to week with injuries and unavailability and add to this the elevation of a number of our U/18’s who gained so much from playing against bigger bodied opponents. Kevin believed in all the players he had each week and I feel sure that the players appreciated that greatly.

Page 8: St George Australian Football Club Inc

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2009 Annual Report 8

We have a proud record in the colts, but that had been let slip over a recent period of time. That was until this year when Geoff Axford took over the reins of our U/18’s. He knew that it was going to be difficult but he also knew it would be rewarding. To figure so prominently in the early football career of so many lads is probably Geoff’s biggest achievement this year. He planned for every game and every training run, he was specific in his direction, and at times he was very demanding but it got the message across. He was congratulatory and also critical when he saw the need. He certainly is a ‘what you see is what you get’ person. To the managers Allan, Leigh and Kevin, thank you so much for your efforts this year. You three are regarded as much a part of the teams as the players. I don’t know whether many know just how much work is done behind the scenes by Bob & Marcie Sterling and Richard Orton. I will elaborate in a few of the unseen acts they have performed this year. New Umpire’s Room, painting, goal post removal, garbage collection, carpet vacuuming, floor sweeping, towel washing, canteen stocking, room opening and shutting, timekeeper, stock relocation to Mahoney Oval for washed out games, meetings, moral support. This went on all year week in and week out so you boys could play football. A huge thank you to the three of you. The Club has made huge strides forward this year after so many years of no future planning. We have a rock solid base of youth playing football in our area and that is a credit to all the Junior Clubs. I feel we are well on the way to being an attractive proposition for a youngster to come and play Senior Football for. We won so many U/18’s games, blooded so many kids in seniors, won so many senior games, made money to set up next year, have more kids waiting at the door to come in and play footy . Why wouldn’t anyone be excited about the future of St.George AFC., why would anyone not want to be a part of these building years, why would anyone not want to play senior footy in the Red and White? John Addison Football Manager

SPONSORSHIP & FUNDRAISING REPORT

The St.George AFL club faces intensified competition for sponsorship dollars. The new Western Sydney AFL franchise plus demands on all businesses to see a return on investment, compound to further challenge our ability to fund football operations. To succeed, a fully integrated business approach is required. Within the Dragons family we have the personnel and ability to meet this challenge.

Questions: What is in it for our sponsors? What have we got that they want? In other words what is our club’s currency, what can be packaged up as a commercial offering to attract sponsorship.

What is our club’s currency? At this year’s presentation night in accepting The Best and Fairest award Club Captain

Declan Donohue, eloquently described the senior players culture and motivation. ‘When the going gets tough during a game it means everything to us that we have our mates on either side of us. Players who are there not for any financial gain or any assertoric reason other than they love the game, love playing and will do everything to help their mates and the club.’

Our currency is the players and ex-players their extended families, friends and work

mates bound together by the common love of AFL and Dragons club life. This is our network this is our currency, people who will go the extra yard to keep it within the family.

As a club we cannot thank Danny Dwyer enough, for his backing has made the return to Red and White a reality; thankyou Danny.

The future is exciting. Back in our heritage Red and White colours. The Dragons are

enthusiastically building strong commercial relationships with the St.George business community. 2009 Major Sponsors

• Season 2009 saw Maso’s agree to another 3 year sponsorship arrangement. • The NAB is welcomed for its inaugural season sponsorship, the start for what is hoped

and mutually beneficial association Corporate partners also welcomed to the St.George AFC during 2009

• Lansvale Hotel and Resort • JSJ Communications • tF4E • Penshurst RSL JAFC • Brands Worldwide • sr Graphic Design • Consolidated Sports • Postshop Edgecliff • Core Civil Communications • Martin & Orr Accountants • Mitre10 Engadine • Lakewood Electrical Services • Dunc Frameless Glass

The Season 2010 sponsorship program is designed to fully integrate Club activities to better

Exciting changes to the Dragons Draw re-named the Dragons Corporate Classic 4. A tradies/community services sponsorship package 5. Launch of the St.George AFL Business Connect 6. Promoting participation with lucrative passive income streams including NAB and

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE’S – REPORT 2009

This is the first time we have reported, as a committee, in St George’s Annual report. This committee is a vital cog for St George’s operations as. How can a player supporter or colleague, be active in the Club, without knowing the history of this great club? The aim of this voluntary body of people is to collect research and record the overall history of St George AFC. Each SFL Club was asked to establish a Historical Committee, which St George has had in place for many years; on an informal basis, original members comprised – Rex Elvish, Bob Sterling and Patrick McCourt. Unfortunately Rex Elvish departed us for the football heaven in June 2007. Following which we were left floundering a little bit, as Rex was our inspiration. Bob and I ambled along collecting and recording data. During early 2009, we agreed we needed to crank up our activities; decided to seek assistance to spread the work load. Bob Sterling is also heavily involved in many daily activities of the administration of the Club, as we are all aware. We also identified, we did not have a succession plan and did not have a colleague on the ground in Sydney, collecting current data and information, applicable to St George’s history, post 2000 to present. We approached colleagues for assistance, and have been lucky enough to recruit two new members; David Green and Scott Richmond. David Green is a Life Member; Premiership player in 1964 and Runner Up in 1965 Phelan medal. Scott Richmond is a current player with St George and brings youth to the committee. By recruiting Scott Richmond, we now have a succession plan, which is important for us three mature colleagues and the history of St George AFC moving forward. Down the track we will recruit another young member; again as part of our succession plan. Scott is now in the throes of learning the history of St George pre 2000; really back to when Club was established in 1928, and there is a lot to learn - [Scotty loves to hear the feats etc, of mature colleagues]. David Green, lives in Brisbane is very valuable to us, as he seems to have old St George connections, which I am not even aware of. As we are now a formal committee, we liaise with other parties researching and recording history of Aussie Rules in Sydney, and with members of NSW/SFL Historical committee. We welcome the contribution of any person or party who may have the smallest piece of history relating to St George AFC. During 2008 and 2009, from time to time we placed adds in the RSVP section of Sydney Morning Herald, seeking history, obtaining some good results. In one instance it produced a 1944 photo and story applicable to a St George junior rep team. St George Club lacks information and historical data from 1928 to approx 1960 and these are the years, David Green will be researching over the next 12 months. Scott Richmond is to obtain missing information, applicable to period, 2000 to present. My project is to start putting more historical content on St George’s web site. If any person would like to contribute in any way, please feel free to contact any one of –

HALL OF FAME [HOF] COMMITTEE’S – REPORT 2009

This is the first time we have reported, as a committee, in St George’s Annual report. As such, it is important we provide this summary as a HOF induction is the pinnacle any person can achieve with St George; apart from being a First Grade Premiership player with the Club. As an original member of this committee, which was established in 2005 in a format that in hindsight, in my opinion, was not well prepared and credentialed for what is was established to do. However in 2005 we inducted five well credentialed St George colleagues; another five in 2006; two in 2007, none in 2008 and four in 2009. All 16 inductees at season end 2009, are worthy of induction. The credentials of all inductees speak volumes of their contributions during their football careers and present involvement with St George – refer list of HOF Inductees under Life Members in this report. As a committee we have a schedule of conditions and qualifications [set by Club’s Executive] an inductee has to meet and satisfy to be considered for possible induction. We gather names for review; assess potential inductee’s qualifications and contributions to St George. Then submit names and their credentials for approval by Club Executive. The fact we have made 16 inductions in past five years does not mean we’ll make the same number in the years ahead. It is possible we could go for a year or more and not make an induction; time will tell! We changed the balance of the committee during 2009 [with approval of Club Executive], to reflect a greater coverage of all decades of the Club’s history. Present structure is -

• Tony Quinn – President • Bob Sterling – Member • Gavin Raper – Member • Patrick J McCourt – Secretary

As Secretary, it is my responsibility to coordinate the actions of the committee, which is assisted by my involvement with the Club’s Historical Committee. Gavin Raper is Club Treasurer, a former Club Captain and B & F and establishes a line with current Club Executive. Three members of HOF Committee are HOF inductees. One matter Club President, Brendan Donohue canvassed with me in past few days, and yet to be confirmed. Mid season we discussed having an annual HOF; Life Members and Colleagues [or a name to be established] dinner where we can all gather in memory of our colleagues. If there are new inductees, will honour at this dinner! It has been the past practice to have inductees honoured at Presentation Night dinner. This was taking away from what this gathering should be. We need separate functions as part of the season’s activities, and gatherings where applicable colleagues are honoured. We invite St George members and colleagues to submit names to us for assessment and consideration as; we may not be aware of, or may overlook the credentials of a possible HOF candidate. Patrick J McCourt Secretary – HOF Committee 29 October 2009

SENIOR COACH'S REPORT 2009 Well what a big year in football it has been!!! 2009 was always going to be a bit of a rebuilding year for the club. With our last 3 coaches all now coaching at other Sydney AFL clubs and enticing players over to play at their new club, plus the loss of a number of Senior players leaving after the 08 season A new chapter was now beginning, the numbers at pre-season training were high and there was a good feeling around the place with plenty of younger guys pushing for the opportunity to play senior footy. Season 09 was always going to be a challenging one for myself personally taking on the reserves coaching role and still playing senior football and then 5 weeks into the season Brad’s sudden departure due to family reasons left the club and me with yet another unexpected challenge. I guess that season 09 was a development year that the club had to have and I am sure that in a few years time we will see the rewards from blooding so many young guys into senior football. Certainly the boys would have learnt a lot over the year after a run of 7 straight losses and some big ones, but then to show some improvement in winning some games on the way home and pushing some of the finals sides was certainly a positive. Although our numbers dropped at training towards the end of the year I believe that the nucleus is there for us to have a successful year next year with a number of under 18s coming up to senior football and a recruit or two. Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank a number of people; Brendan and the committee for giving me the opportunity to coach the senior side plus the support from the committee mainly on match days . My game day assistant Min who gave up his golf days to help me continue to play was a fantastic help with his experience and guidance. Kevin Wilsen had the un thank able task of taking over the reserves after an 0-4 start and did a great job in trying to keep the boys together and develop their games further. Bear and JA in the under 18s always were willing to push some of the younger guys up for a taste of senior football. So moving forward I have already started planning for next year and will be looking for a bigger commitment from the playing group to increase our fitness and skill and continue to push for improvement from all players. See you at Pre season training. Shane Demir St George Dragons Senior Coach

RESERVE GRADE COACH'S REPORT Season 2009 will not be remembered as one of the greatest seasons for the St George Reserve grade as the team struggled to match opposition teams in all facets of the game of Australian Rules Football. Lack of skill, fitness and discipline all contributed to the team performance and it was reflected in the match results. One win from eighteen games. At the commencement of the competition the Reserve grade had adequate player numbers, enthusiasm and the makings of a competitive outfit. Multiple losses however took its toll on numbers at training, numbers on match day and the general performance of the team. To their credit a core group of players stuck it out and they must be congratulated for their efforts on match days and at training. Whilst it may appear to have been a very poor season in terms of winning games the opportunity to introduce many of the under eighteen players to senior football was invaluable. It was great to see these young men match their skills against older and bigger senior footballers. On most occasions the under eighteen players held their own and I only hope they learned and gained valuable experience playing in the Reserve grade team. Many thanks to Shane Demir, Lenny and everyone who helped out with the Reserves this year. Congratulations to Matt Nichols Best & Fairest, Damian Pratt Runner Up B & F and Luke Maunder for his wholehearted effort all season. A special mention to Jimmy Da Canto for captaining the team and always showing great enthusiasm despite the team being on the wrong end of the scoreboard. 2010 will be a difficult year for the Reserve Grade team but with a greater commitment from the players and coaching staff the St George Reserve Grade will be back in Division One very quickly. Kevin Wilsen Reserve Grade Coach

UNDER 18 COACH’S REPORT

Firstly, to all of you who joined us either physically, financially or emotionally to make the back to Red and White year a great success, I want you all back in 2010 to continue our success. Now, for the 18’s review. I would like to go back to last year and reflect on the huge effort put in by Rod Craig and the boys which created the solid nucleus on which we built this year’s success. While all the senior players were rewarded in many ways, they were very unlucky not to achieve the ultimate glory which they deserved for their 2 years of hard work. Having coached the u16’s for the last three years I would like to thank all the junior coaches who have provided the club with a group of great young men with a diversity of football skills. Every successful football team needs great support and coordination. Top votes go to John Addison and Al Pandelis. To John, in particular, thankyou for leading me into the coaching role for 2009. I didn’t take much pushing as I am passionate about showing Sydney just how well our local product can perform. To the match committee. John, Al, Enzo and Rick were always visible and provided a variety of opinion and great feed back. To those less visible Wal, Critter, and Coop thanks for your involvement.

Gadget, thanks for jumping at the runners job. Your football knowledge is invaluable and your support for the backs gives great balance to our approach. Sorry for all those indecipherable messages and all the screaming in your ear for most of the year. John believes we have the best medical set up in the league. Rob and Enoch have been fantastic all year. Enoch paid us the greatest compliment by saying we were the nicest group/club he has been involved with. On night after a few beers, Rob and Enoch were looking for a spot in the side so Trav obliged by putting their name permanently on the magnetic board. I hope this means they will be with us next season. The club may well have been in dire straits if it wasn’t for the commitment of three blokes who stepped up when a couple of very untimely resignations occurred. Well done Brendan, Shane and Kev. In 2009 we had 35 players who could have played this season and finished with a very cohesive squad of 31 by the Grand Final. Congratulations to all the boys who saw out the full season. Our selection policy was made clear early in the year and many of the young boys knew it might be a long season with patchy opportunities. To these players I’m sure the football gods will reward your commitment, patience and team spirit. Thanks to Kev for giving many opportunities in the ressies to keep their match skills intact. We did have some minor problems with selection but by having a clear policy and being open to discussion we were able sort through the issues and keep everyone working hard for the team. Many players had a run in the reserves and many were lucky to be rewarded by Shane with selection in the top side. Congratulation to those players who had a run with the Swans Reserves although the system seems to have many flaws. For many of you the transition to senior footy has been difficult. I have made it tough at times but the plan was to develop you all as young men and to develop a team ethic where the team is more important than the individual. There was endless barking about “personal discipline” and this year you have all passed this test. Thanks to all the parents for their support and in particular the transport. It takes a lot of trips to Olds to get the 100 hours up on the L’s. There were also many dragon’s jumpers hanging on local hills hoists during the year. Danny Dwyer’s support is legendary around the club and we would like to thank him for his support for the boys on Grand Final day and for the alternative strip we wore with pride when we beat Wollongong in the Preliminary Final. For the senior half of the side we want you all back for senior footy next year and the other half need to be back to go one step further. We were hoping to add “09” on the honour board to add to our great colts history. Maybe “10” will be a good number. To all the boys; thankyou all. I will always reflect fondly on the joy your successful year has provided for all of us that that love footy. Thanks to Kay and Trav for putting up with me. I think Kay has as much footy running through her veins as me these days. I hope they give me a leave pass to be back next year. Bear (Geoff Axford).

WOMEN’S COACH'S REPORT

2009 saw a new look team take the field with some mixed results. It was great to see the Red and White colours return and games back at Olds. The girls really gave it all this year, and with a full squad few and far between due to injuries and travel, it was difficult to get any role on. But we never missed a beat. With 5 wins, a narrow loss to the ultimate premiers, and hard intense footy every week, it proves that the team has immeasurable talent within, and when we do get a full squad week in week out, the finals are only a whisker away ! All players must be congratulated, even though we did miss the finals. Thanks must go to everyone who played, managed and helped out during the year, especially Colesy whose efforts never go unnoticed !! Congratulations to everyone, including our award winners, Claire, Kath, Pops, Colesy and Ash, and look forward to a new year in 2010 ??!!

Garry Slowgrove Women’s Coach

Bill Lawler Memorial Shield – Rising Star Ben Maddern Dedicated to the memory of former President and Life Member. Bill was very prominent in the promotion of junior football in the St George and Sutherland districts and a tireless worker for the St George senior club. Bill passed away suddenly in January 2001. If the player is in their second senior season they must have played no more than 7 senior games in their first year.

John Bester Memorial Award – Encouragement, Endeavour Jim Do Canto & Commitment Dedicated to the memory of a fine player and leader of our First Grade side during the 1970’s and 1980’s. John was always respected by his teammates especially the younger players because of the encouragement he gave them. Unfortunately, he lost a hard battle with a terminal illness and the Club lost a great player and teammate.

Colleen J Wadling Memorial Award – Courage Tim Addison Donated by a former President, John Wadling in memory of his wife. John presided over the extensions to the clubrooms and contributed significantly towards the raising of funds and gaining development approval. Bob was honoured with the Merit Award of the National Australian Football Council in 1976. He was also made a Life Member of the NSW AFL the same year. In 1977, the NSW AFL recognised Bob’s contribution by naming the Bob McConnell Club Championship Trophy for competition by all clubs in the Sydney Football League and Sydney Football Association. For many years Bob was the timekeeper for the Sydney Swans at their SCG matches. Bob’s photograph hangs above the clubroom door as he still proudly watches each batch of new dragons grow.

Bob McConnell Memorial Trust Award – for Junior Development Jason Andriske Established when Bob passed away in 1995 by the caretakers of his trust fund. It was agree at this time that the Club would honour this award towards the development of local juniors with significant representative achievements.
