April 7, 2019
Next week we will enter Holy Week. Beginning with the Saturday Vigil on April 13 we will enter
into a sacred window of time where we remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to the acclamation of
the crowds, the washing of the feet and the Last Supper, the agony in the garden, his arrest, trial,
scourging and sacrificial death. It would be nice to plan ahead and make this a sacred time. Here are
a few suggestions:
-Bring your blessed palm home and place it in a prominent place and remember Jesus’ entry into
Jerusalem.
-Try to set aside regular TV, movie and social media for extra prayer. Read over the Gospel ac-
counts of the Passion of our Lord. Each of the Gospel writers has a two chapter account of these
days: Matthew chapters 26 and 27, Mark 14 and 15, Luke 22 and 23 and John 18 and 19.
-Consider attending the Chrism Mass on April 16 at 7:00 pm at the Cathedral. Here Bishop Hart-
mayer will bless the holy oils that we will use this year for baptisms and ministry to the seriously ill.
Here also the priests will renew their promises to be faithful ministers of the Gospel. There will be
a supper served at 5:00 pm before the mass in the Cathedral Social Hall. If you would like to attend
please call Ann at 265-3249. We have ten slots for the meal.

Jesus is left alone with the woman. St. Augustine wrote that “there remained a great mis-
ery and a great mercy.” Jesus now has a conversation with the woman. “Woman, where are
they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do
I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.” God wrote the Ten Command-
ments with his finger on the tablets on Mt. Sinai – the Law. Today God writes in the sand
with mercy. We see Jesus’ mercy in this story:
It captures Jesus' attitude: we do not hear words of contempt, we do not hear words of con-
demnation, but only words of love, of mercy, that invite us to conversion. 'Neither do I con-
demn you. Go and sin no more!' Well, brothers and sisters! God's face is that of a merciful father who is always patient. Have you thought about God's patience, the patience that He
has with each of us? That is His mercy. He always has patience, is always patient with us, understanding us, awaiting us, never tiring of forgiving us if we know how to return to him
with a contrite heart. 'Great is the Lord's mercy', says the Psalm. (Pope Francis, Angelus
March 17, 2013) The commentator Matthew Henry notes, “Christ neither found fault with the law, nor
excused the prisoner's guilt; nor did he countenance the pretended zeal of the Pharisees.
Those are self-condemned who judge others, and yet do the same thing.”
I would like to focus on Jesus’ final words to the woman, “Go, and from now on do
not sin anymore.” When Jesus says go and sin no more he is showing confidence in us! He
believes in us, that we can do better. But he is also challenging her that she must reform her
life. In effect he is saying your final judgment is not now. You have time to reform. He is the
Lord of second chances. It is said, “Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future.”
Think back to Moses, King David, St. Paul.
What is your image of Confession? Maybe it is like a car wash. As you drive your car it
picks up road grime, dirt and leaves. From time to time we wash it until it needs another
cleaning. There can be a danger in this image. Confession can become a type of car wash
that we drive through until we need it again.
The truth is that sin is wound that needs to be healed. Imagine going to the doctor with
a bit of skin cancer on your nose and she places a Superman band-aid on it and says, “Ok,
you are all set. See you in six months!” The problem is the ailment is not really being ad-
dressed. It is only being covered up.
Jesus wants to heal us from our sinful ways, “do not sin anymore.” A dermatologist
would freeze the skin cancer or perhaps cut it off so that it did not spread and cause more
damage. Of being healed from sin Pope Francis says we should not only see sin as a stain
and confession as a trip to the dry cleaner. He says, “But sin is more than a stain. Sin is a
wound; it needs to be treated, healed” (The Name of God is Mercy, p. 26).
Let us not forget this word: God never tires of forgiving us, never! 'So, Father, what is the problem?' Well, the problem is that we get tired, we don't want to, we get tired of asking
forgiveness. Let us never get tired. Let us never get tired. He is the loving Father who always
forgives, who has that heart of mercy for all of us. And let us also learn to be merciful with everyone. Let us call upon the intercession of the Madonna who has held in her arms the
Mercy of God made human. (Pope Francis, Angelus March 17, 2013)

Additional Confessions will be heard at Noon on Wed. April 10th for those who cannot

Stations of the Cross will be celebrated throughout Lent in
the main church each Friday. What are the Stations? This is
an ancient meditation on the last hours of our Lord’s life.
From Pilate condemning Jesus to death, through his three
falls, to his body being laid in the tomb, we meditate on all
that Our Lord has done for us. The meditations last for
about 30 minutes. This is a devotional that is open to all, so please consider in-
viting some friends, co-workers and family members to join you. Each week
we will offer the Stations on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. in the main church.
