Questions like, Does what someone did decades ago define who they are today?and Is perfection in all areas the only acceptable standard?Something we seem to forget is, Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future. But is that true or just one of those churchystatements people make from time to time…? EVERY SAINT HAS A PAST.Do we remember Who we wereand from where we have come?!! People who display a holier than thouattitude must have forgotten this. Yet Gods word reminds us of this truth. For example, Peters denial of our Lord on the night of His arrest is one of only a very few incidents which is mentioned in all four gospels! In referring to his past, the apostle Paul says; “…as to zeal, a persecutor of the churchPhilippians 3:6, “…not only did I lock up many saints in prisons, but when they were being put to death, I cast my vote against themActs 26:10. Not surprisingly then, Paul says, “…Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I AM FOREMOST OF ALL,1 Timothy 2:15! So if we should ever (foolishly) become judgmental of others, let us not forget our Lords words, Judge not lest you be judged,Matthew 7:1. For all of us have a past!!! EVERY SINNER HAS A FUTURE.When we look at the majority of people around us, how do we see them? Do we see them through the eyes of men or of God? Regarding others (including non-believers), John wrote, For God so loved THE WORLD, that He gave His only begotten Son…,” John 3:16. Regarding the soldiers who just nailed Him to a cross, Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing,Luke 23:34. Treating others differently who come to worship, just on the basis of how they look or dress, caused James to write, “…have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives,James 2:1-4. At one point in the life of every Christian we were lost in sin. But someone cared enough about our soul to make us their mission field. They saw us through Jesus eyes and considered the possibility of our being with them in heaven. Clearly, every sinner has a future! Seeing ourselves for who we were should fill us with humility. Seeing others as Jesus does should fill us with a greater love and desire to serve them as He did. Now many non-believers have the wrong idea about Gods people (but sadly, in some cases, they may be right on target!). A section of scripture deserving to be read more frequently by us is where, Jesus told this parable to certain ones who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt…,” Luke 18:9-14. “Who We Are & How We See You!”

The election this past Tuesday in Alabama raised a number of questions. Questions like, “Does what someone did decades ago define who they are today?” and “Is perfection in all areas the only acceptable standard?” Something we seem to forget is, “Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.” But is that true or just one of those “churchy” statements people make from time to time…?

“EVERY SAINT HAS A PAST.” Do we remember ‘Who we were’ and from where we have come?!! People who display a “holier than thou” attitude must have forgotten this. Yet God’s word reminds us of this truth. For example, Peter’s denial of our Lord on the night of His arrest is one of only a very few incidents which is mentioned in all four gospels! Events & Activities:

Make a Self-Examination As we come to the close of another year, people around the world will do a self-examination and make resolutions for the New Year. Most intentions are good, but some lose their determination quickly. New Year’s Resolutions have become more of a joke than a serious attempt at changing one’s behavior or life-style for a better outcome. A self-examination is necessary for the Christian, not only at the beginning of the year, but every day. Some of the questions we need to ask ourselves; How did last year go? What do I want to do differently this year? Am I studying the Bible daily? Do I attend services every time I am able? How is my prayer life? etc, etc. If we find ourselves lacking in these areas, we need to resolve to do better in the future. Dwelling on the past will only hinder our spiritual growth. We can’t let past failures define our future. Paul faced many failures throughout his life; he was persecuted, shipwrecked, opposed, and deserted. While in prison, Paul was not willing to quit or give up. In Paul’s letter to the Philippians in Philippians 3:13-14 “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul didn’t let the fear of failure keep him from trying again. If during this last year you didn't rely on the Lord as much as you should have, there is no time like the present to make a resolution. It is our responsibility not to lose focus and continue pressing on. Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:10-11 “Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,

and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” If someone asks you this question, “Do you want to do better next year?” All of us would probably automatically answer “Yes”. Don’t wait, there is no better time than now to “make every effort to confirm your calling and election.” Brad Mansfield
