Thirty-first Sunday
in Ordinary Time
NOVEMBER 3, 2019 Wisdom 11:22—12:2;
2 Thessalonians 1:11—2:2; Luke 19:1-10 In God’s eyes, the entire uni-
verse is but a speck of dust.
Strangely, however, God cares
deeply for everything he has made.
He knows each one of us. He loves
us individually. He cares for the
least significant of us. His almighty
power is shown most perfectly in
his loving care for the little things.
The Gospel tells us of a “little
man” named Zacchaeus. He was
short in height and small in virtue.
He climbed a sycamore tree to see
Jesus pass by in Jericho. Jesus
noticed him, invited him to come
down, and said that he would
dine at Zacchaeus’ house! Imme-
diately, Zacchaeus became tall in
righteousness because of the
mercy of the Lord.
As we approach the end of
“Ordinary Time” and the begin-
ning of Advent, our second reading
concentrates on the end of the
world and the Second Coming of
Christ. This world will end. Maybe
today. Maybe tomorrow. Christ
will come in glory. No one knows
when this will happen.
The “signs” of the end took
place before the end of the first
century; there are no more signs.
We should, therefore, live each day
as if it is going to be our last day
on earth. Don’t be frightened,
however. Remember the mercy of
the Lord. But be sober and watch-
ful. Pray that you may always be
ready for the Lord to come.

Fr. Don’s DoodlingsI’m sure that we’re acutely aware of the need for priests and religious sisters
and brothers in the Church today. Even non Catholics have remarked about thatto me for years. That said, I also believe that it is up to everyone to encourageour youth to consider a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. But it’s alsoup to families to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to such vocations.Since this is the beginning of National Vocations Awareness Week, I offer youthe following which is provided by the United States Conference of CatholicBishops (USCCB):National Vocations Awareness WeekAs Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives! He calls some
to marriage, some to the priesthood, and others to religious life. Some remainas generous single people. Fully living our own vocations—and teaching youngpeople how to discern God’s call—is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. Todaybegins National Vocation Awareness Week. During this week, please pray abouthow God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the youngpeople in your life—children, grandchildren, students, and friends—to be openif God calls them to priesthood or consecrated life.Teach Your Children to Use GPSAfter Mass today, have a conversation with your children, asking, “What do
you want to be when you grow up?” After a few moments of discussion, ask,“Who do you think God wants you to be when you grow up?” Emphasize to yourchildren that God has a specific plan in mind for them, and that following God’splan is the surest way to happiness. Every life decision—which college to attend, whom to date, which job to pursue, whether to enter seminary, whom tomarry—should be undertaken only after praying for God’s guidance. In otherwords, encourage kids to navigate life using GPS—God’s Positioning System. How Parents Can Nurture Vocations*Set an example.Model discipleship and a loving marriage to your children.*Seek role models. Befriend priests, sisters, and brothers and invite them to
your home.*Look to scripture. Read and discuss the Bible stories of Mary’s response to
God (Luke 1:26 39), and Jesus calling the Apostles (Mt 4:18 22).*Pray for the future. Pray aloud that your children will follow Jesus and
remain open to holy marriage, priesthood, and religious life.If your child does express interest in the priesthood or religious life, be
supportive. The best thing you can say is, “Whatever God wants for you, I wantfor you, too. Just keep praying to discover His will for your life.”
