Louisiana Flooding Victims Collection: Many of us have been following the historic flooding in Louisiana. As many as 60,000 homes have been damaged with 20,000 people rescued from flood waters. Lives have been cruelly altered. In light of the devastation, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has directed that every Diocese in the U.S. is to take up a second collection for the victims on September 18th. This emergency collection will be used both to support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses in the area. Donation checks should be made out to your local parish as I am asking each pastor to compile all collected funds and forward one check from the parish to the Diocese. In this way we can get the funds quickly where they are needed. Please keep our brothers and sisters in your prayers, and know that I join with them in tremendous gratitude for your help in this moment of great suffering. -- Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger Year of Mercy, Special Liturgy: Bishop Weisenburger will celebrate a Mass focused on the theme of Mercy on Sunday, August 28th, at Sacred Heart Church in Colby. Confessions will be heard beginning at 3:00 p.m., with a Rosary led by the Bishop at 3:30 p.m. Mass will begin at 4:00 p.m. As Pope Francis wrote: 'In this Jubilee Year, may the Church echo the word of God that resounds strong

and clear as a message and a sign of pardon, strength, aid, and love. May she never tire of extending mercy, and be ever patient in offering compassion and comfort. May the Church become the voice of every man and woman, and repeat confidently without end: Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old'”. A belated "Thank you!" to all who contributed to the Kansans for Life Baby Bottle campaign. Monies collected are being sent to the KFL Education Fund to promote life issues from conception to natural death. Thank you to all who generously contributed! The Diocese of Salina wishes to honor all couples who are celebrating 25, 40, 50, 55 and 60+ or more years of marriage. Celebrations with Bishop Edward J. Bird City Dates: Sept. 4 Potluck—Volunteer Hostesses Sept. 18 Coffee and Roll hostesses: Donna Wright and Dana Wright Altar Society Meeting (election of officers) with sign-up sheets for the coming year for rolls and potlucks Note from Fr. Kyle Question: I have a book I read to my child at night called LullaBible and one of the prayers asked for him to "accept the Lord with a childlike faith." Why a childlike faith? Answer: Oh the simple joys and pleasures of children! How long can one child play with a stick and ball, with one doll, with a few toys and truly be satisfied. They need for nothing but the basic needs and the most important need of being loved. The saying comes from Matthew 18:3, “Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Imagine if we could address God with the simplicity and the absolute ardor with which young children address their loving parents. When a child is in danger or is hurt to whom do they call? When they are in need to whom do they run? When they are overjoyed with something whom do they tell? Their parents. I know this is not always the case, I know that sin exists and both children and parents miss the mark but Christ was instructing us to approach Our Father in Heaven as a child does His loving Father. When you are hurt and in need to whom or to what do you go? If it is not God then perhaps you need to pray for a more childlike Faith. When something wonderful has happened to you and you are overjoyed what do you do? If you do not at least tell your Father in Heaven about it and give Him thanks then perhaps you need to pray for a more childlike Faith. If you are not okay just sitting in the presence of God wherever that may be (for He dwells in the soul of every baptized soul) then perhaps you need to pray for a more childlike Faith for what child does not like to be simply held by his parent. We could all do well to simplify our Faith and become more like children so that we can accept the Lord with a childlike Faith. May we run to Our Father at all times!

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time "When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you." Today Jesus instructs us to be generous enough to serve others without expecting repay-ment. At least, without expecting to be repaid in THIS life. It's interesting that the Gospel con-cludes with Jesus' promise that if we follow this teaching, we "will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." In other words, God will "repay" our generosity on earth by welcoming us into heaven. Really, what better investment could there possibly be? It can be tempting to think of our money as purely our own. We work hard to earn it. Or we receive it from others who wanted US to have it. Or luck came our way (and too bad for you that it didn't come your way). We thus feel possessive of our money and often struggle with the idea of giv-ing it away or lending it without hope of being paid back (with interest!). But today's Gospel challenges us with a different perspective. In essence, Jesus tells us to use our money for the sake of others, not just to assure our own earthly comfort. As difficult as this request may be, its important to remember that Jesus honors the sacri-fice! This is why he promises repayment in heaven. He understands that it "costs" us a great deal to part with the security of using our money for our-selves alone. He understands that in caring for the poor, we risk putting ourselves in their com-pany. But God's ways are not the ways of the world. Instead of investing everything in a bank, Jesus asks us to invest in the poor. After all, no bank on earth can possibly provide the infinite rate of return that Jesus promises. ©Liturgical Publications Inc

“In the beginning…” (week 23) I can hear mom’s conversations more clearly now. I can hear her read, sing and talk. I like to kick back, suck my thumb, and listen to her read to me. My eyelids and eye-brows are fully formed. My fingernails have grown to the end of my fingers. My brain is growing really fast so I’m going to be very smart. Chris weighs nearly a pound now. Dads, did you know: Low-frequency sounds, mimicking a male voice, penetrate the abdomen and uterine wall better than the higher frequencies of the female voice? “Teach them (God’s ordinances) to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

©Liturgical Publications Inc
