Wishing everybody a Peaceful, Happy and Healthy New Year
The next Service at St Faith’s is Holy Communion at 11am on Sunday 5th January 2020. Please do come along and join us, where you will be made most welcome, refreshments are served after the service. The Carol Service was on Saturday 24th December [Christmas Eve!] at 3pm, followed by mulled wine and mince pies. As this write up had to be submitted before the service we hope that it was enjoyed by all who attended and that everybody had a Happy Christmas. At the time of writing, no events have yet been finalised/arranged for 2020 so any ideas for fund raising, social get togethers, offers to arrange events etc. etc., would be most appreciated. Please contact Rita and Peter Crowther at Wilsthorpe Cottage with your inspirations. The repairs to the windows were carried out in 2019 and in 2020 we hope to upgrade the electrics, both repairs which were raised and advised to be carried out sooner rather than later, in the Quinquennial Inspection of 2019. Thank you to all who help to clean, arrange flowers and generously look after St Faith’s. Paperback books for sale! Who needs Black Friday or the January sales, when they can buy books at such a bargain price!! 50p each or 3 for a £1 and the selection is frequently refreshed.

Bags for the Homeless. Cazz would like to express her thanks to all those who gave so generously to her appeal. Greatford Village Hall News. There have been some people changes at the Village Hall, where we say goodbye to some long-standing supporters and welcome in some new committee members. After many years of contribution to the management of the Village Hall, David Brown, Andy Elliott, Jonathan Manning and Simon Teesdale have resigned from their positions. We want to place on record a huge thank you to them for their contributions to village events and the running of the Village Hall over the years, which have been much appreciated by the village community. At the recent AGM, Elisabeth Beckett, Maggie Kaye and Alison Horton joined the committee, (Alison as secretary). Please be aware that Heather Hooper will be standing down as Treasurer in the coming months, after many years’ service, so if you still have some New Year’s resolutions to make and would like to put yourself forward for this role, please contact the committee via [email protected] for more information. Please contact that email also if you want to hire the hall for a one-off event or a regular booking. Plans for the village hall include improving the storage areas of the Hall, so that the space is much more usable and the refurbishment of the toilet area. We are seeking qualified and available builders to submit quotations to complete that work so if you can recommend anyone please pass their details to the committee via the email above. At the time of writing the Greatford Christmas Fayre has not taken place, but we are sure it will have provided some festive cheer. We hope that 2020 will see many more community events at the Hall – contact us if you are interested in getting involved! Flying the Flag: Mark any special event by having the Union Flag or St George’s Flag flown at the Village Hall (to Village Hall Funds) or outside the Church (in aid of Church Funds). Please contact Cyril Webb on 560437 Wishing everyone in all parishes a happy and healthy New Year, and thank you to the Towers and Spires editors Peter and Gail for working so hard each month to get our news, activities, adverts etc published.
BARHOLM-WITH-STOWE
It was good to see so many at the Advent Carol Service on the 1st
Sunday of Advent, we enjoyed readings of scripture that helped to
prepare us for Christmas and special Advent Carols were sung by
the congregation. After the service, mulled wine and mince pies
were enjoyed by all, grateful thanks to all who helped prepared for
the service.
Although there was seasonal green foliage in the church for the
Advent Carol Service, there was a burst of colour in the flowers for
our Christmas Day service of Holy Communion, when we joined
with Fr Aran to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
We love having flowers in Church throughout the year (exceptions
being Advent and Lent) and if you would like to place some in
memory of loved ones or a special occasion please Telephone
Elizabeth on 01778 344674.
If you have visited the church or churchyard recently, you may be
wondering why there is a pile of loose soil at the edge of the
footpath; this is to be levelled and resewn to make the cutting of
the grass more manageable.
We plan to have a Memorial Garden for the burial of ashes of
loved ones; this is to be at the North East corner of the churchyard.
If you have any comments or suggestions please be in touch.
We wish you all a Very Happy New Year and hope to see you
soon, our Services for January are; Sunday 5th – Evensong 6pm –

Tallington Village Hall. We wish all our readers and supporters a Happy and Healthy New Year! SOS!!! Help and support needed! Due to illness, house moving and increasing work and family commitments our committee and band of supporters and helpers is shrinking. We need people who can help occasionally with events and just small ‘odd-jobs’ with publicity, leaflet delivering, 200 collections etc etc. Do you want your Village Hall to succeed as a community meeting place? If so, please volunteer even if it’s in just a small way. Our contact details are below URGENT! Our most urgent need is for someone to do nothing much at all! We need someone to take our phone calls and pass on information about bookings, etc to the relevant committee member. If you can be friendly and efficient and want to be involved without leaving your home PLEASE be in touch. We look forward to working with you. Social Evenings: There are no plans for a social in the near future until we have more helpers! Our coffee (or tea!) afternoon is also suspended. We tried it, few people came, so no more planned until we have more helpers and guests. Every Monday 9.30 am – Pilates Class which is open to all ages and abilities, run by Louise Mackrill, a fully qualified Pilates instructor with over 10 years experience. When will all of this end?
Well, that’s a telling question. I’m not
referring to Blake eating my ear, but to the
emotions we feel as the excitement and
festivities build. As school nativity plays and
concerts are over, the schools have broken up,
and attention has been turned to the
festivities... We might be pondering when
everything will return to normal.
Like it or not, Christmas means we have a change in routine. The days start to get
longer again, and we look ahead; sometimes making new resolutions for things
we will change.
On Tuesday 11th February in the evening, we are going to run ‘Alpha’ based on
hospitality, sharing and open conversation. This is being run for you and the
sessions will end at Easter. You are invited to come along and find out a little
more about life. It may help you, and me… answer some of those big questions
about when things end (or simply change), and the reasons behind our lives.
I hope that by accepting the invitation and joining in at Alpha we may get a
different perspective on life. And get to work out for themselves what life is
about, and perhaps challenge some of the assumptions we make about Church
and life. I’m going, it’s going to be fun, will you come too?
We’re also planning a trip for Children to Norfolk next Summer (3rd-7th August).
This will be heavily subsidised and if you or your children are 11-18 on 3rd August
2020 send me an email, and I’ll tell you more (email from parents/guardians
please).
I hope the Christmas season has brought you all you need, and the hope you see
that Church is trying to change to meet the needs of all who live in our group.
Send me an email if you’d like to join Alpha (there’s no
cost) [email protected]
May God bless you, Fr Aran
