Helping Those in Need

There are many people in need of the basic necessities. The violence in Iraq, Bhutan, Syria, Congo, Burma, and Somalia (to name a few places) has displaced many people from their homes. Ethnic, religious persecutions, or simply being victims of war, have resulted in many refugees around the world. The Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program serves about 200 cases annually. The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago takes in a share of these cases every year.

The Catholic Charities of Chicago works with parishes across the archdiocese. A parish will often sponsor a refugee family and will assist them in getting settled in society. It is a work of mercy to help people in need. Unfortunately, resources are limited and sometimes it is not possible to take on the entire needs of a family. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago is in real need of help. The State of Illinois owes them sixteen million dollars, but, since they do not have a budget in Illinois, the money will not be coming in for some time.

Unfortunately, because of our own needs in the parish, we cannot sponsor a family at this time. However, we can still help Catholic Charities meet some of the needs of the refugees they are supporting. On the weekend of March 5 and 6 we will be having a collection of hygiene items. These items will be brought to the Catholic Charities office in Des Plaines. They will be distributed to families in need. I would be grateful for any help you can give to support this worthy cause. A list of the items needed is provided below. Thank you for your continuing generosity.

JESUS AND THE DEVIL The devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, as today’s Gospel reminds us. Try a self-serving mira-cle. Try selling out. Try dazzling the audience; peo-ple are gullible, after all. Try all these easy ways. The tempter tries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attempts the old soft-soap, the snake-oil solu-tions that are always readily at hand. The devil knows better, but is powerless to do better, much less be better. The devil is evil personified, who senses in Jesus the stronger, truly attractive pres-ence of holiness. Evil is exposed and engaged, we are reminded in this Sunday’s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. The undoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up the work of soul-healing and world-healing. This Lent, the Church invites us to enter into this renew-ing, re-creative work and be made whole again. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

Parishioners have inquired as to the status of the St. Eugene message sign located at the corner of Canfield and Foster. The electronic board that controls the message center of the sign was damaged by water due to weather conditions. The sign itself was manufactured and had been serviced by White Way Sign which had been an industry leader. Unfortunately, White Way is now out of business. The electrical components of their signs were proprietary in design and replacement parts are not available in the general market. As a result, we are unable to find another company who has the parts to repair the sign and will need to replace the message center portion of the sign. We are seeking proposals for that work and, based upon bids received to date, we anticipate a cost of approximately $25,000. This would allow us to replace the existing sign with a more modern design offering higher resolution and the added feature of a color message center. A monochrome model is available at a cost of about $2,000 less than the color.

Needless to say, this is an expense that is not included in our budget. Fr. Koeune has and will be consulting with the Parish Council, School Advisory Council and Finance Council for their input and advice.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today Lent begins. Ash Wednesday initiates the forty days of the Lenten fast, but since Sundays are not tallied in the days of fasting, today is the solemn opening of the forty days of Lent. The Church has work to do to-day, principally the calling forward of those chosen (the proper word is elected) for the Easter sacraments. Some of those who have been catechumens may now make a transition to a new way of life as the “elect.” For them, this Lent will be a time of “purification” and “enlightenment.” For us who accompany them, it is a time of helping them discern God’s call and prepare for new life. This year, while the readings from the third year of the Lectionary cycle are usually read, they are set aside on certain Sundays for the benefit of the elect. We turn then to the readings from Year A, and we give those who jour-ney to the font of baptism three extraordinary compan-ions. In the Gospels for those days, we meet the woman of Samaria and the man born blind, and we come to the tomb of Lazarus three days after his death. Many bishops celebrate the Rite of Election on or near today, affirming God’s choice for these new faithful, and also offering them the solidarity of many companions. In 2013, over 38,000 adults entered the baptismal waters in the United States, a remarkable testimony to the vigor of our tradition of re-ceiving and nurturing adult faith. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Fifty Years and Counting

The Biblical Revolution of Vatican II

One of the most remarkable achievements of the Second Vat-ican Council was the impetus it gave the biblical Renewal

within the Catholic Church. The Council’s Decree “Dei Ver-bum” (“the Word of God”) on divine Revelation and its pas-

toral recommendations brought a new energy and perspective to the Church, a renewal that fifty years later is still in pro-

cess.

Joseph M. Scheidler is National Director of the Pro-Life Action League, a national pro-life educational and activist organization headquartered in Chicago. Joe left a career in public relations to become a full-time pro-life activist shortly after the U. S. Supreme Court issued its Roe v. Wade opinion in 1973.

In 1990, Ann began working part-time at the Pro-Life Action League as Assistant Director, a position which gradually became full-time. Since 2000 she has served as Vice-President, and is closely involved with all aspects of the League's work, from public relations and development to activism and outreach. She is also the grandmother of 23.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish

community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-

tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our

participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the

needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all

people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
